Fix Deadlock by identifying the failure first: a crash or launch failure, a rendering problem such as low FPS and stutter, or network latency that causes rubber-banding. These symptoms can look similar, but they require different tests. Start with reversible software checks—confirm the installation, compare your PC with the current requirements, verify the game files, update Windows and the GPU driver, disable overlays, and test the -dx11 launch option. For lag, separately test local Wi-Fi and bandwidth, then consider server distance, your ISP, or a game-service issue.
No published controlled test establishes a universal FPS increase, crash fix, or latency reduction from one setting or product. Change one variable at a time, record what happens, and keep the evidence you will need if Valve or Steam Support must investigate.
Identify which Deadlock problem you actually have
Begin with the symptom that occurs most consistently. A crash is a process failure; low FPS is a rendering or CPU-time problem; lag is a network-timing problem. A busy network can make a match feel like a frame-rate collapse, and a shader or driver problem can look like a brief disconnect, so use the checks below rather than changing every setting at once.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| What you see | Most likely category | First useful observation |
|---|---|---|
| Deadlock closes, freezes, or never reaches the menu | Launch or crash failure | Note whether it fails before the menu, in the menu, when joining a match, or during play; write down the exact error. |
| The image is consistently slow, or FPS falls during fights | Rendering performance | Observe GPU and CPU utilization, temperatures, and whether the drop is constant or tied to visual activity. |
| Players teleport, inputs arrive late, or movement snaps back | Network latency, packet loss, or a service route problem | Check the latency indicator and test whether downloads, streams, Wi-Fi, or server distance correlate with the symptom. |
| The screen appears smooth but actions arrive late | Network latency rather than FPS | Stop bandwidth-heavy applications and compare a wired Ethernet test with Wi-Fi. |
Keep a short baseline before making changes: your Windows version, CPU and GPU models, RAM amount, GPU-driver version, game build or recent patch context, the time and location of the failure, and any error text. Record whether the issue happens only in Deadlock or also in other 3D games. This prevents a network problem from being “fixed” with graphics settings and makes rollback possible.

Check requirements and the installation before deeper changes
Compare your PC with the current listing
Check Deadlock’s current Steam store listing for the supported Windows version and hardware fields. Valve’s listing currently shows requirement fields, so do not rely on an old minimum-specification screenshot or assume that a machine that starts the game will deliver stable performance. Valve notes that games may fail to launch when a computer is just at or below the stated requirements. Treat a marginal CPU, GPU, amount of RAM, or available storage as a possible cause rather than immediately buying hardware.
Confirm the correct installation
In Steam, open Library, select Deadlock, and confirm that the Play button points to the installation you expect. If you have moved the library, added another drive, or restored files from a backup, a mismatched or incomplete installation can produce a launch failure that resembles a driver problem. Close other game clients while testing so that you know which executable and installation Steam is using.
Verify the game files
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Deadlock and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to finish.
- Write down whether Steam reports files that were reacquired, then launch Deadlock without changing any other setting.
Verification is preferable to reinstalling as an early test because it is reversible and targets damaged or missing files. If the verification itself fails, capture the message and available-drive information before attempting another repair. If verification completes but the same crash occurs at the same stage, move to the operating-system, driver, overlay, and launch-option checks instead of repeating verification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse reversible launch and software checks for crashes
Install pending Windows and graphics-driver updates
Install current Windows updates, restart, and then install the latest graphics driver offered by the GPU manufacturer for your exact model and Windows version. A driver update can address an incompatibility introduced by a game patch, while an operating-system update can replace supporting components. Record the driver version before and after the change so you can identify whether the timing matches the crash.
Do not combine a driver update with several graphics changes if you want a useful diagnosis. First launch with the same Deadlock settings and overlays you used before the update. If the crash disappears, keep the previous settings and test one later change at a time. If the update makes behavior worse, roll back to the prior driver using the manufacturer’s supported rollback path and retain the version information for escalation.

Disable overlays and unnecessary background programs
Temporarily turn off overlays from Steam, chat software, GPU utilities, recording tools, and other programs that inject a layer into a game. Also stop browser windows, launchers, cloud synchronization, screen capture, and hardware-monitoring utilities that you do not need for the test. An overlay can trigger a crash, consume GPU or CPU time, or make a driver conflict appear to be a Deadlock fault.
Restart Windows after disabling the programs, then reproduce the failure using the same map or menu step. If the crash stops, re-enable programs individually until the conflicting component is identified. Leave the confirmed offender disabled while playing, or update it through its own supported channel. If no single program changes the result, restore your normal setup and continue; disabling everything is a diagnostic state, not a permanent requirement.

Test the -dx11 launch option in isolation
The Deadlock Handbook recommends trying -dx11 as a troubleshooting experiment. In Steam, open Deadlock’s Properties, stay on the General page, and enter -dx11 in Launch Options. Close the dialog and start the game. Do not add other options during this test.
Compare the exact failure stage with the baseline: startup, menu, loading into a match, or in-game. If DirectX 11 changes the behavior, keep that result as evidence, not as proof that it is universally faster or more stable. Remove the option and restore the previous state if it worsens the issue or causes a new one. A launch option can change rendering compatibility while leaving a damaged installation, inadequate hardware, or a network fault untouched.
Diagnose low FPS and stutter without guessing
Separate a constant limit from an intermittent drop
Play the same type of short session and note when the problem occurs. A frame rate that is low everywhere points toward a hardware limit, graphics configuration, driver issue, or persistent background load. A drop that appears only during large fights or effects suggests a peak GPU or CPU workload. A pause that coincides with disk activity, downloads, or a driver notification may be background contention rather than the average rendering capability.

Use your monitoring tool to observe GPU utilization, CPU utilization by core, temperatures, memory use, and whether clocks fall under heat or power limits. High GPU utilization with acceptable CPU headroom indicates that rendering settings or the GPU are the likely constraint. One CPU core at or near full utilization while the GPU is waiting points toward a CPU or game-thread limit. Neither pattern proves a single fix, but it tells you which change to test first.

- Close downloads, streams, browsers with active video, recording jobs, and unnecessary launchers.
- Disable overlays and background utilities as described above.
- Restart the PC so a stuck process or driver state is not carried into the test.
- Launch Deadlock with the same resolution and settings, then repeat the situation that caused the drop.
- Change one demanding graphics setting, test again, and record the result before changing another.
The independent Deadlock Handbook specifically recommends updating the graphics driver, removing overlays, and verifying files when troubleshooting performance. Those steps are useful because they are low-cost and reversible; they do not establish a guaranteed FPS gain for every PC.
Lower settings one at a time
Start with settings that impose a clear rendering cost, then test a short, repeatable scene. Keep resolution, frame-rate caps, and the other options unchanged while you test one setting. If the frame rate does not improve, restore that setting and test a different one. This avoids trading away image quality for a change that was unrelated to the bottleneck.
A lower setting can improve headroom immediately, but it cannot cure a network delay, a failing driver, overheating, or a CPU-limited scene. If the GPU remains underused while one CPU thread is saturated, lowering visual quality may have little effect. If temperatures are high and clocks are falling, improve cooling and airflow rather than expecting a graphics preset to solve thermal throttling.
Decide whether hardware is the limiting component
Consider a discrete graphics-card upgrade only after file verification, Windows and driver updates, overlay removal, background-load checks, and measured graphics changes show that the current GPU is consistently the limiting component. A new GPU provides more rendering headroom but costs money, requires adequate power and case space, and cannot fix a CPU limit, overheating, or network lag. Because Valve’s current requirement fields are unspecified, choose hardware based on measured utilization and the performance target you need rather than a universal model recommendation.

Understand what “lag” means
Steam defines lag for troubleshooting purposes as “high network latency interfering with gameplay.” Latency is the time for data to travel between your PC and the game service and back. It is different from FPS: a high frame rate cannot make a delayed server response arrive sooner, and a perfect connection cannot render a scene faster.
Stop competing traffic
- Pause Steam downloads and updates, cloud synchronization, and file transfers.
- Stop video streams and large uploads on the PC and, if possible, on other devices using the same connection.
- Close browsers, chat clients, and launchers that may download or upload in the background.
- Restart Deadlock and compare the latency indicator and movement behavior.
Bandwidth contention can create choppy play and can also make the experience feel like a frame-rate problem. If the symptom improves only when other traffic stops, adjust schedules or router quality-of-service settings rather than changing the GPU.
Compare Wi-Fi with a wired Ethernet test
Connect the PC directly to the router with Ethernet and repeat the same test. A wired result that is stable while Wi-Fi is erratic points toward wireless signal quality, interference, or local packet loss. A Cat6 Ethernet cable is a practical diagnostic accessory, but it cannot reduce the distance to a game server, repair ISP congestion, or correct a game-service outage.
If Ethernet does not change the symptom, check whether the problem occurs on every server or only at particular times. Test another nearby service or game if available. A problem limited to one game can be a game-service or routing issue; a problem affecting multiple services is more consistent with the ISP, modem, router, or local network.

Account for server distance and ISP conditions
Steam recommends checking whether the selected server is geographically distant and whether the connection is fast enough for the session. A distant server adds unavoidable round-trip time, while congestion on the route or at the ISP can add delay and packet loss even when a speed test reports a high download rate. Record the time of day, the server region shown by the game or platform, and whether other services are affected.
Do not interpret a single bad match as proof of a permanent hardware fault. Conversely, do not assume every rubber-band is a server problem: Wi-Fi interference, an upload saturating the connection, or a router under load can produce the same visible behavior. Repeating the test on Ethernet with competing traffic stopped is the most useful local isolation step.
Choose the next action by symptom and evidence
| Option | Best when | Cost and reversibility | What it cannot fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Verify files, update Windows, update the GPU driver | Startup crashes, unexplained freezes, or a problem after a patch | Normally no purchase; updates can be reversed through supported recovery or rollback paths | Server distance, ISP congestion, or an underpowered PC |
| Disable overlays and background programs | Crashes or stutter coincide with recording, chat, monitoring, or downloads | Free and fully reversible; requires retesting each program | Damaged hardware or external network latency |
Test -dx11 |
Launch or rendering behavior suggests a graphics-API compatibility issue | Free, isolated, and removable | Missing files, insufficient hardware, or a connection outage |
| Wi-Fi-to-Ethernet comparison | Rubber-banding or latency varies by room, time, or wireless use | Requires access to a cable and router; easy to undo | Distant servers, ISP routing, and service-wide incidents |
| Lower graphics settings | Monitoring shows the GPU is saturated during the drop | Free; visual quality is the trade-off and settings can be restored | CPU limits, overheating, and network delay |
| Upgrade the GPU | Software checks are complete and the GPU is consistently the measured bottleneck | Permanent hardware expense; may require power, cooling, or case changes | CPU limits, drivers, crashes caused by software, and latency |
When and how to escalate
Escalate through Valve or Steam Support when the problem survives verification, current Windows and GPU drivers, overlay removal, the isolated -dx11 test, and the appropriate network comparison—or when Steam reports an error you cannot resolve. Community guides can suggest patch-specific hypotheses, but official support is the right channel for account, installation, or service-side investigation.

Quick Recap
A practical order of operations
- Classify the symptom as launch/crash, rendering performance, or network latency.
- Capture the baseline hardware, software, error, and timing details.
- Check the current Steam requirements and confirm the intended installation.
- Verify Deadlock’s files in Steam before reinstalling.
- Update Windows and the graphics driver, then retest without changing other variables.
- Disable overlays and unnecessary background programs and retest.
- For a crash or rendering issue, test
-dx11alone and remove it if it worsens behavior. - For low FPS, use utilization and temperature data, then lower one demanding setting at a time.
- For lag, stop competing traffic, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, and consider server distance, ISP routing, and service status.
- If the issue remains, send Valve or Steam Support the complete reproduction and system checklist.
