Then match the exact error message to the relevant repair. What the Deadhand Theater demo is running on
Deadhand Theater is a free Windows demo on Steam (App 5345560), released October 16, 2026. SteamDB identifies it as an Unreal Engine project and records public build 25985877, updated October 16, 2026. The Steam store page still lists the full game as unreleased, so its requirements and behavior can change while development continues.

The requirements are the store listing’s minimums, not a promise of a particular frame rate or crash-free operation. A PC that technically meets them can still fail because of a driver, security product, damaged file or conflicting overlay.
Check whether the demo is installed on an internal drive with normal read/write access. A nearly full drive, a removable drive that is not available at startup, or a library folder with restrictive attributes can make a healthy download look like a launch fault. Note the Steam library location before changing anything so you can identify the correct folder if antivirus reports a file.

Do these low-risk checks first
- Close the game and Steam completely. Choose Steam > Exit, wait for Steam processes to disappear in Task Manager, then start Steam again. Restart Windows before the next launch attempt; this clears a hung game process and pending driver or runtime updates.

These categories overlap, but the order matters. A missing executable requires checking security software; a save problem requires preserving files. Reinstalling immediately can destroy useful evidence without addressing either cause.
When Steam says Preparing to Launch and closes
This pattern often means the process exits before a visible game window is created. Steam Support cautions that launch failures have many causes because Windows hardware and software combinations are unique. Valve describes these cases as difficult to diagnose precisely because users have so many different configurations. Follow the sequence below so each test changes one variable at a time.
1. Confirm the demo is current

2. Verify and retry with a clean desktop
Run Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of demo files. Reboot, then test with overlays, capture software, hardware monitoring and VPN or proxy tools closed. If the game starts in this state, re-enable utilities one at a time to identify the conflict. 3. Check driver and runtime conditions
Install the current stable graphics driver, reboot, and remove any custom profile for the demo. If the installation folder contains Microsoft Visual C++ 2022 or DirectX June 2010 redistributable installers, run them as administrator and restart Windows. Use only installers that came with the legitimate Steam installation; avoid third-party download sites. A runtime installer may finish without displaying a dramatic change, so still retest from Steam afterward.
4. Compare the machine with the baseline
Check Settings > System > About for Windows and processor details, Settings > System > About > System type for a 64-bit installation, and Task Manager > Performance for memory and GPU information. If the system is near the 8 GB RAM or GTX 1060 minimum, close browser tabs and recording tools before every test. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee that every combination of driver, security software and peripheral utility will work.
5. Test the executable only as a diagnostic
Use Steam’s Browse command to open the installation folder and double-click the game executable once. If Windows displays a missing-DLL, access or security message, copy the exact wording. Do not download an isolated DLL from an unofficial website or permanently bypass a warning. The direct launch can reveal a Windows error hidden by Steam, but normal play should continue to be started through Steam so updates and verification work correctly.
Fixing a Missing Executable error
Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable) generally means Steam cannot find the program it expects. Steam identifies three common causes: antivirus quarantine, a corrupted file or a failed download.
Inspect security software without weakening the whole PC
- Open the antivirus product’s quarantine or protection history and look for a file from the Deadhand Theater demo’s Steam library folder.
- Check the filename and location. Restore or allow it only when it is clearly part of the legitimate installation and the Steam download is complete.
- Add an exclusion for the specific verified demo file or installation folder only if necessary. Do not disable protection globally or exclude an entire drive.

If the executable is reacquired and immediately quarantined again, the exclusion was either too broad, applied to the wrong folder, or not accepted by the security product. Record the product name and detection label and ask Bag Track Games or the security vendor for guidance rather than repeatedly restoring the file blindly.

Fixing This game is currently unavailable
This message has a different checklist from a missing executable. Perform the following in order.
- Exit and relaunch Steam, then restart Windows.
- Install current Windows and graphics-driver updates.
- Run Steam’s integrity verification for the demo.
- Check the Steam library and demo folders for a read-only attribute. In File Explorer, right-click the relevant folder, choose Properties, clear Read-only if it is applied as a folder restriction, select Apply, and retry. Do not change permissions on unrelated system folders.
- Open the demo’s installation folder from Steam’s Properties > Installed Files > Browse command and double-click the game executable once. If Windows shows a missing component or security warning, record the exact text instead of bypassing it blindly.
- Run any Microsoft Visual C++ 2022 or DirectX June 2010 installers included in that folder, restart Windows, and launch from Steam again.
Launching the executable directly is a diagnostic step, not a replacement for Steam. It can reveal a Windows or runtime error that Steam hides, but Steam must still manage updates and file verification.
Crashes tied to a boss kill or quitting from the pause menu
Bag Track Games’ v0.3.0 changelog, dated September 1, 2026, records two specific fixes: “Fixed a crash that could occur when killing a boss in certain ways” and “Fixed unintended behavior when quitting the game via the pause menu.” Those notes apply to the build that contains them; they are not a guarantee that every later demo crash has been eliminated.

Before treating either symptom as a new hardware problem, let Steam finish all updates and verify the installed files. Record the action that triggers the crash, whether it occurs every time, and the build shown in Steam. If the current build still reproduces it, include those details in a support report rather than repeatedly deleting and reinstalling the demo. A crash that happens only after a particular boss, weapon, room or quit sequence is more actionable than a report that only says “it crashed.”
What to do when a save disappears
The demo advertises Save Anytime, but the official and support material reviewed for this release does not publish a Deadhand Theater save directory, Steam Cloud policy or player-facing restoration procedure. That means a forum-posted path or a generic Unreal Engine save location is not verified for this game.
Protect the remaining evidence
- Stop launching and quitting repeatedly if the missing save might be caused by a synchronization or overwrite issue.

Request help from the developer
Contact Bag Track Games through the game’s official Steam support route or its official community and contact channels. Ask for a confirmed save location and recovery steps, and provide the build number, Windows version, GPU and driver version, the exact reproduction sequence, and screenshots or logs. Treat any path supplied by another player as unverified until the developer confirms it.
