Start with the official recovery order: update Cyberpunk 2077 and Windows, confirm your hardware meets the current requirements, verify the installation, clean-install (or roll back) the graphics driver, disable overlays and monitoring tools, remove overclocks, and test a completely vanilla install. Keep the game on an SSD. If you play on a console, use the separate heat, airflow, restart, download, and power-cycle steps below.
First, identify the failure you are actually fixing
“Cyberpunk 2077 is running badly” can describe several different faults. A crash to desktop, a launcher that never opens, a black screen, uneven frame pacing, low average frame rate, and long pauses while the world streams have different likely causes. Write down the platform, store, game version, whether Phantom Liberty is installed, whether mods or trainers were ever used, and the exact point of failure. That information prevents you from applying a graphics tweak to a damaged installation or treating an overheating console as a software problem.
- Crash on launch or during loading: prioritize Windows and driver compatibility, file verification, Visual C++ redistributables, overlays, and mods.
- Crash after a major update: assume an outdated mod or altered game file until a clean, unmodified installation has been tested.
- Stutter while moving through Night City: check SSD storage, streaming-related pauses, crowd density, volumetric effects, ray tracing, and frame-time consistency rather than average FPS alone.
- Issue limited to one location or save: reproduce it with an earlier save and retain the affected save for support.
- Black screen, heat, or instability on console: use the platform recovery procedure instead of PC driver steps.
Check the current build, system requirements, and storage first
Update before changing settings
Patch 2.31, released on September 11, 2025, is the latest version identified in the official support workflow used for this guide. It applies to PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Mac, and Nintendo Switch 2, and includes “Various stability and performance optimizations” plus a fix for a quest-related crash. Install the latest build offered for your platform before comparing behavior. A patch can change shader compilation, streaming, CPU scheduling, and crash conditions, so results from an older build are not a reliable baseline.

Use an SSD, not an HDD
Update 2.0 changed the PC requirement: “As PC system requirements have been updated, running the game on an SSD is now a requirement.” The same notice explains that HDD bandwidth can prevent new content from streaming correctly. An HDD can therefore produce long loads, delayed asset pop-in, pauses while driving, or apparent stutter even when the GPU is not fully busy. Move the game and its active installation to an SSD before judging graphics settings.

PC crash and launch fixes: follow this order
1. Return the machine to a known-good state
- Close Cyberpunk 2077 and its launcher.
- Remove CPU and GPU overclocking or underclocking. Load the motherboard’s default settings if necessary. Leave memory and GPU tuning at stock while testing; a profile that is stable in other games can still fail here.
- Disconnect or disable hardware-monitoring and tuning utilities temporarily. Their overlays and hooks can interfere even when they are not visibly open.
- Restart Windows after making those changes, then test one launch before changing another variable.
This is a diagnostic state, not a permanent performance recommendation. Once the game is stable, re-enable one utility or setting at a time so you can identify a conflict.
2. Clean-install the graphics driver
A normal “update” can leave a corrupted component or an incompatible profile. Use the cleanup procedure appropriate to your GPU vendor, then install a current driver without optional overlays while diagnosing:

- AMD: use AMD Cleanup Utility, then install the driver package again.
Follow the utility’s instructions, reboot when requested, and install the driver that matches your GPU and Windows version. If the crash began immediately after a driver update, try the previous driver version instead of repeatedly reinstalling the newest one. Report the regression if the older driver restores stability; do not present a rollback as a universal fix.
3. Verify the game files
Verification replaces missing or altered files without requiring a full reinstall. Use the store that owns the installation:

4. Disable overlays and background hooks
Turn off Discord, Ubisoft Connect, GOG GALAXY, and other in-game overlays for the test. Close unnecessary applications, capture tools, RGB utilities, hardware monitors, and anti-malware software temporarily if your security policy allows it. Re-enable protection immediately after the controlled test. If disabling one overlay fixes the crash, leave it off for Cyberpunk 2077 or add a narrowly scoped game exception rather than disabling security globally.
5. Repair Microsoft Visual C++ components for launch failures
If the launcher opens and the game immediately exits, or Windows reports a missing runtime component, run the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable installers in both x86 and x64 forms. Choose Repair when offered; otherwise reinstall, reboot, and test. Installing only the architecture that matches your CPU is not sufficient because games and launchers can load different runtime components.
6. Try administrator launch only as a test
For a persistent launch failure, run the launcher as administrator once. If that changes the result, investigate permissions on the game folder, Documents folder, and security software rather than permanently using elevated privileges without understanding why they are needed.
Remove mods before diagnosing a post-update crash
Update 2.0 changed core systems. CD PROJEKT RED warned: “Because changes to crucial game systems are extensive, we strongly recommend uninstalling pre-2.0 mods until the modding community has a chance to update them.” Outdated script extensions, redscript components, archive replacements, trainers, and console-command tools can cause critical errors, crashes during loading, or broken quests.
- Back up your saves from

- Verify files in your store client.
- Launch without any mods, trainers, or console commands and test the same save or location.
- Only after the vanilla game is stable, add mods one at a time, using versions that explicitly support your current game build.
A clean vanilla test separates a game or driver problem from a modification problem. If the unmodified installation works, the responsible mod is found by adding changes back individually, not by reinstalling every mod at once.
Diagnose stuttering and low performance with repeatable tests
Run the built-in benchmark
Open Settings → Graphics → Run Benchmark. Record the result, including average and minimum behavior if shown, and note the resolution, upscaling mode, ray-tracing state, and frame cap. The benchmark is useful for comparing one change at a time, but it does not reproduce every streaming-heavy street, quest, or save. Compare frame-time consistency, not just FPS
Stutter is a timing problem: a high average frame rate can still feel uneven when individual frames arrive late. Test the same route or activity for several minutes after each change. Keep the save, weather, crowd activity, resolution, and upscaling setting consistent. Record whether the hitch occurs when turning quickly, entering a dense district, driving at speed, opening menus, or loading a new area.
Lower demanding settings systematically
Change one group at a time, rerun the benchmark, and then repeat the same in-game route. The usual order is:
- Disable or reduce path tracing and ray tracing. These features can raise GPU workload substantially and may expose marginal driver or thermal stability.
- Reduce crowd density. Update 2.0 moved Crowd Density to the Graphics section, making it easier to test as a CPU-side workload.
- Reduce volumetric effects and other atmosphere settings if pauses occur in busy or foggy scenes.
- Lower output resolution or change the upscaling mode and quality level. Check for image-quality trade-offs rather than assuming a lower preset is automatically preferable.
- Use a frame cap that your system can sustain consistently. A stable lower ceiling can feel smoother than an uncapped rate that repeatedly oscillates.
Update 2.0 also added an AMD SMT selector under Gameplay → Performance with Off, On, and Auto. Test the available modes on an AMD CPU if CPU-limited stutter persists, keeping all other settings unchanged. There is no universal best choice; the result depends on the processor, driver, operating system, and scene.

Official support procedures do not publish a single FPS increase that applies to every PC. Any improvement depends on hardware, driver version, resolution, graphics settings, thermals, and the exact location being tested.
When a crash happens in one location or save
If the problem occurs only in a particular quest, building, or street, load an earlier save and attempt the same route. Save files are located at %userprofile%Saved GamesCD Projekt RedCyberpunk 2077. Keep the original affected save untouched and create a copy before experimenting. A location-specific failure can be tied to quest state or a damaged save rather than global performance.
On Xbox, patch history demonstrates why updating matters: Patch 2.12 fixed an infinite-loading and crash case tied to some saves, as well as stuttering when Intel Prioritize P-Cores was enabled. If an issue appeared after a patch, document the exact build and test the latest version before deleting saves or reinstalling.

Performance drops and stutter
- Place the console where the rear exhaust has adequate clearance. Do not operate it inside a tight cabinet.
- Remove accumulated dust from vents using the console manufacturer’s safe cleaning guidance.
- Pause background downloads and installations while playing.
- After using Rest Mode, perform a normal restart before launching the game if performance is abnormal.
- Restart Cyberpunk 2077 after long sessions. CD PROJEKT RED states that this clears memory and can improve performance.
These steps address heat, memory accumulation, and storage contention. They do not change the game’s graphics settings, so use them before concluding that a patch permanently lowered performance.

- Fully shut down the PlayStation; do not select Rest Mode.
- Wait until all console lights are off.
- Unplug the power cable and leave it disconnected for at least two minutes.
- Reconnect the cable, boot the console, install any pending game update, and test again.
- If one save triggers the crash, try an earlier save while keeping the original for diagnosis.
CD PROJEKT RED describes this complete power cycle as a way to troubleshoot performance issues, crashes, and black screens. If the console repeatedly overheats, shuts down, or crashes across multiple games, stop testing the game and seek console service.
Xbox troubleshooting
Use the current Xbox support flow for the game’s performance, crash, and cache-clearing categories. First update Cyberpunk 2077 and the console to the latest available build. Then restart the console and test without downloads running. If the issue is tied to one save, compare an earlier save and retain the failing one. Cache clearing and reinstall steps should follow the current Xbox procedure for your console model; avoid deleting local saves unless cloud synchronization and a backup have been confirmed.

Prepare an effective support report
When the ordered tests do not solve the problem, send a concise report through the official support form. Include:
- Exact game version and platform (PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Mac, or Nintendo Switch 2).
- Store or launcher on PC and whether Phantom Liberty is installed.
