If it clips the left or right edge, check the screen width, smart-width setting, crop width, and page CSS. If missing content appears only after scripts run, wait for the page to finish rendering before capture. The right fix depends on where the image is clipped and how the page is built.
Identify where the image is clipped
Start with the saved output and classify the missing content. This narrows the relevant controls before you change settings:
- Bottom edge: investigate screen height, crop height, and whether the page had finished expanding when captured.
- Left or right edge: investigate screen width, smart-width behavior, crop width, and CSS such as fixed widths or
overflow. - Content that appears late or is missing inconsistently: investigate JavaScript timing and page readiness.
Compare the result with the page in a browser as a diagnostic reference, not as proof that the output should be identical. wkhtmltoimage uses its own rendering environment, so browser layout can differ.
Check screen and crop dimensions
For clipping at the bottom
The wkhtmltoimage manual describes --height as the screen height; by default, height is calculated from page content. If the output has an explicit crop height, inspect that too: a crop selects the output window and can exclude content even when the page itself extends farther. The library reference exposes screen and crop controls, including crop.height. See the wkhtmltoimage usage documentation and upstream library settings reference.

Try a larger screen height or crop height only after checking which one is limiting the image. There is no universally correct value; use the dimensions needed by the page and output.
For clipping at a horizontal edge
The manual describes --width as a guide unless --disable-smart-width makes the width strict. The library reference also exposes screenWidth, smartWidth, and crop coordinates and dimensions, including crop.width. Check whether the viewport or crop is narrower than the content. Also inspect fixed-width elements and CSS overflow rules that may place content outside the visible area.

Adjust one relevant width control at a time and compare the resulting image. Increasing the viewport may help when the page needs more layout room; changing the crop helps only when the output window itself is excluding content. Avoid assuming one width works for every site.
Wait for JavaScript-driven content
A page may initially render a shorter or incomplete layout, then add text, images, or other elements after JavaScript runs. wkhtmltoimage provides --javascript-delay and --window-status command-line options. The library settings include load.jsdelay and a wait option tied to JavaScript calling window.print(). Consult the command-line usage documentation and library settings reference for the syntax applicable to your build.

Use a delay long enough for the specific page, or arrange for the page to expose a readiness status and wait for that value. Documentation does not establish one delay that works for all pages. If the image remains incomplete, inspect JavaScript diagnostics and determine whether the page is waiting on an API call, blocked resource, or other asynchronous work rather than simply increasing the delay blindly.
Use this diagnostic sequence
- Record the reproduction details. Save the exact command, input URL or file, output format, wkhtmltoimage version, operating system, and package or build source.
- Locate the missing region. Note whether the loss is at the bottom, a horizontal edge, or in content that appears late.
- Check the matching geometry. For bottom clipping, inspect screen and crop height. For horizontal clipping, inspect screen width, smart width, crop width, fixed-width elements, and overflow rules.
- Check page readiness. If content is generated asynchronously, use an appropriate delay or explicit readiness status and inspect JavaScript diagnostics.
- Change one variable at a time. Use a minimal reproducible page where possible so you can tell whether the change affected the viewport, crop, CSS layout, or timing.
- Compare the exact environment. If dimensions still differ unexpectedly, reproduce with the same binary and build on the same operating system before attributing the issue to page CSS.
Keep wkhtmltoimage and wkhtmltopdf advice separate
Some online reports about text cut off at the right margin concern wkhtmltopdf, the PDF renderer, not wkhtmltoimage. The upstream library reference explicitly says that web.enableIntelligentShrinking “Has no effect for wkhtmltoimage.” Do not treat PDF advice to disable intelligent shrinking as a fix for this image renderer. The distinction is documented in the library settings reference.

A historical issue reported sizing differences between Linux and Windows with wkhtmltopdf 0.12.1 using patched Qt. That is adjacent evidence, not proof that the same defect affects every wkhtmltoimage case. It is a reason to include version, operating system, and build details when comparing results, not a universal diagnosis: upstream issue #2182.
