To move a Cult of the Lamb save to Switch 2 safely, use the same Nintendo Account and user, confirm an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, and compare the console and cloud timestamps before choosing Back Up Save Data or Download Save Data. Those commands overwrite the other copy, so an incorrect choice can permanently replace the newer save.
If both consoles are available during initial Switch 2 setup, Nintendo’s local System Transfer is a separate migration route. If Nintendo reports that a server-updated backup was cancelled, stop opening the game on either console, decide which copy to preserve, then download or back up that copy before resuming play.
How Switch 2 save data and cloud backups relate
Your Cult of the Lamb progress is associated with the Nintendo Account and local user that played the game, not simply with the cartridge or game installation. A cartridge inserted into another console does not automatically bring the original user’s save with it.
Nintendo provides two different migration mechanisms:

- Save Data Cloud: stores one cloud backup for each user and game. You can upload the console copy with Back Up Save Data, or replace the console copy with the cloud copy using Download Save Data.
- System Transfer: moves save data and settings between consoles during the initial Switch 2 setup. It is intended for a complete move when both systems are available. Nintendo also provides a temporary server-transfer route when the old console will not be retained.
These paths are not interchangeable. A cloud download is a choice between two versions of one game save; System Transfer is a console-migration process that can move broader user data and settings.
Use this decision table before changing anything

1. Confirm the Nintendo Account, user and membership
Before opening the game, verify the identity under which the save was created. The same Nintendo Account must be used on Switch 2 for Nintendo’s Switch and Switch 2 backup sharing to work. If several people use the console, also select the same local user profile that originally played Cult of the Lamb.
Check the account and user
- On Switch 2, open the user-selection screen and choose the profile that owns the original progress.
- Open that user’s account information and confirm it is linked to the same Nintendo Account used on the previous console.
- Do not create a new user as a workaround. A new profile has a separate save-data context.
Nintendo Switch Online is required to use Save Data Cloud. Nintendo states that an active membership is required for the service. If the membership expired, existing backups become available again when the user resubscribes within 180 days of expiration, according to Nintendo’s current support guidance. That does not create a new backup and does not restore a save that was already overwritten.
Check whether the game supports cloud backup
Nintendo notes that some games do not support Save Data Cloud. On Switch 2, open System Settings → Data Management → Save Data Cloud, select the intended user, and look for Cult of the Lamb. If it is absent, do not assume a cloud backup exists. Use a local System Transfer when possible, or troubleshoot the account and setup rather than repeatedly selecting download commands.
2. Compare the console and cloud timestamps
Never select an overwrite operation based on memory of when you last played. Switch 2 displays the latest cloud-backup time and the latest save time on the console, allowing you to see which copy is newer.

- Open System Settings.
- Select Data Management.
- Choose Save Data Cloud.
- Select the user who owns the Cult of the Lamb save.
- Select Cult of the Lamb.
- Read both timestamps before selecting any command.
Keep the screen open while deciding. A cloud timestamp reflects the last successful upload, not necessarily the last time you played. A console timestamp reflects the local save on that system. If you played on another console after the cloud backup was made, the cloud can be older even though it is present.
3. Keep the newer copy without losing the other one by mistake
When the Switch 2 console save is newer
Choose Back Up Save Data to upload the newer local save to the cloud. Nintendo warns that the operation replaces the existing cloud copy. After the upload completes, reopen the Save Data Cloud entry and confirm that the cloud timestamp now matches the intended session.

If you are unsure, stop and investigate which user or console produced each timestamp instead of uploading immediately.
When the cloud backup is newer
Choose Download Save Data to replace the Switch 2 local save with the cloud version. Nintendo warns that downloading overwrites the console copy and that the overwritten data cannot be recovered through the cloud command.
Close Cult of the Lamb before downloading. After the download finishes, launch the game with the same user and check that the expected settlement, followers and progression are present.

When the timestamps are equal or confusing
Do not use a download or backup operation merely to “refresh” the save. Equal timestamps can mean the copies are already synchronized, while confusing times can indicate that the wrong user is selected or that the game was played on a different console. Verify the user, account and console first. If the game shows the expected progress locally, leave the files unchanged and make a deliberate backup only after confirming that this is the desired version.

4. Transfer a save during initial Switch 2 setup
If you still have the original Switch and have not completed Switch 2 setup, local System Transfer is usually the clearest migration route. Nintendo says the consoles communicate locally to transfer save data and settings. Follow the setup wizard rather than launching the game first.
- Power on the Switch 2 and begin its initial setup.
- When setup offers a transfer from another Nintendo Switch, choose the local transfer option.
- Keep the original Switch nearby, powered on and connected as directed by the wizard.
- Sign in with the Nintendo Account associated with the original Cult of the Lamb user.
- Accept the transfer prompts on both consoles and wait for the process to finish before opening the game.
- After setup completes, select the transferred user on Switch 2 and launch Cult of the Lamb once to verify the progress.
Do not treat the game cartridge as the transfer itself. The save is part of the user’s data, and the transfer must complete for that user. If the old console will not be retained, Nintendo also documents a temporary server-transfer route. Use that route during setup and follow its instructions before normal play on Switch 2.
5. Fix a “server-updated” or backup-cancelled message
A server-updated cancellation can appear when the game is opened on another console before the newest server copy has been downloaded. Nintendo’s guidance is to stop creating more sessions while you decide which version to preserve.
Stop the conflict from getting worse
- Close Cult of the Lamb on both consoles.
- Do not launch the game again on either system while the message is unresolved.
- On the console showing the message, read whether Nintendo is offering the server version for download or the local console version for backup.
- Compare the available timestamps and decide which progress is authoritative.
Keep the server version
If the server copy contains the latest progress, choose the option to download it. Wait for the operation to finish, then launch the game only on the console that now contains the downloaded save.

Keep the console version
If the local console contains the latest progress, choose the option to back it up to the server. This replaces the older server copy. Confirm the upload completes before using another console.
Restore automatic backup
Nintendo’s instructions include restoring automatic backup if it was disabled while resolving the conflict. Re-enable automatic backup after the intended version is safely established, then allow the first backup to complete while the console is connected to the internet.
Nintendo also states that each user can back up only one save-data file to the cloud per game. Separate users therefore have separate save contexts, but one user cannot keep multiple Cult of the Lamb histories as independent cloud files under the same profile.

A missing entry does not prove that the save has been erased. Check the conditions that determine whether a cloud backup can be displayed.
- Wrong user: Return to System Settings → Data Management → Save Data Cloud and select the profile that originally played the game.
- Wrong account: Confirm that the Switch 2 user is linked to the original Nintendo Account.
- Membership expired: Resubscribe to Nintendo Switch Online. Nintendo says existing backups can be accessed again if the user resubscribes within 180 days after expiry.
- No title support or no backup: Nintendo says some games do not support Save Data Cloud. If Cult of the Lamb does not appear in the list, there may be no cloud copy for that user.
- Backup never completed: A local save is not automatically proof that an upload succeeded. The cloud entry and its timestamp are the confirmation.
Do not delete the user while troubleshooting. Nintendo warns that deleting a user deletes that user’s save data. If the original console still works, preserve it and use local System Transfer or a confirmed cloud upload before making profile changes.

7. Fix an unreadable, stale or apparently missing local save
When the game starts without expected progress, work through software and profile checks before deleting anything.
- Update Switch 2 through System Settings → System → System Update.
- Update Cult of the Lamb from the HOME Menu by highlighting the game, pressing the + button, choosing Software Update, and selecting the internet update option.
- Restart the console completely.
- Confirm that the correct user profile is launching the game.
- Use the system’s data-management option to check for corrupted data for the game.
- If the title appears in Save Data Cloud and the cloud timestamp is the desired version, use Download Save Data only after confirming that overwriting the local copy is acceptable.
Checking for corrupted data examines the game installation; it is not a substitute for a save backup. A re-download or software update should not be treated as a way to reconstruct a save that was deleted or overwritten.
Common symptoms and the right response

How to avoid another synchronization conflict
- Use one designated console for normal play until the migration is verified.
- Before switching consoles, allow automatic backup to finish while online.
- When moving to another console, download the newest server copy before launching the game there.
- Keep the same Nintendo Account and user selected on every system.
- When a prompt offers backup or download, read both timestamps first.
- After a transfer, open the game once, verify the expected progress, and then make a fresh cloud backup.
These habits matter because Nintendo’s cloud tools maintain one backup per user and game, not a version history from which an earlier overwritten save can be restored.

What Nintendo’s guidance does and does not establish
Nintendo’s published material provides console- and service-level procedures for accounts, memberships, Save Data Cloud, System Transfer and server-updated conflicts. It does not identify a Cult of the Lamb-specific Switch 2 defect in the support results underlying these steps. Community reports may describe cloud saves as a practical recovery route, but anecdotal reports do not replace the account, timestamp and overwrite checks above.
If the title is missing from the selected user’s Save Data Cloud list, no supported cloud download can be assumed. If both consoles are available, local System Transfer remains the distinct migration option during initial setup. If a save remains missing after confirming the account, user, membership, software updates and transfer path, preserve the original console and contact Nintendo Support rather than deleting profiles or repeatedly overwriting copies.
