If you cannot matchmake with a friend on another console, first verify that the game supports cross-play for your exact platforms, console generations, and game mode. Then align every player’s game version and in-game cross-play setting, use the publisher’s account system for friends when required, review privacy and block settings, check service status, and only then troubleshoot the local network. Cross-play is controlled by the game and its online services—not by PS5, Xbox, or Windows alone—so changing router settings cannot make an unsupported platform combination work.
Why cross-play fails even when everyone can play online
Being able to play an online game does not prove that your account, edition, platform generation, mode, or privacy settings can connect to a particular friend. Cross-play has several independent gates. A failure at any one of them can look like a matchmaking bug or a missing invitation.
- Game support: The publisher decides which platforms and modes share a matchmaking pool.
- Generation and edition: Current and previous console versions can be separate products with separate pools.
- Version and mode: Different title updates or a mode that excludes cross-play prevent a session from forming.
- Identity and social graph: Some games use a publisher account for cross-platform friends instead of PSN or Xbox friends alone.
- Privacy and blocks: Platform controls can suppress invitations while ordinary internet access continues to work.
- Service and network path: An outage, unstable Wi-Fi connection, or multiple NAT routers can interrupt matchmaking or invite delivery.
Work through those gates in order. The sequence starts with facts that no local setting can change and ends with network changes that can affect other devices.

1. Confirm the game’s exact cross-play compatibility
Check platform and console generation
Read the publisher’s current support page for the specific game, not a general console feature page. Confirm all of the following:

- Whether PlayStation, Xbox, and PC are supported together.
- Whether PS5 and Xbox Series X|S share a pool with PC.
- Whether PS4 and Xbox One are placed in a separate pool.
- Whether the game mode you selected allows cross-play.
- Whether a special edition, cloud version, or backward-compatible build is treated differently.
EA SPORTS FC is a concrete example of why the generation check matters: its documented current-generation group contains PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, while PS4 and Xbox One are in another group. A PS5 player therefore cannot assume that a friend running the PS4 version can join the same match simply because both consoles are made by Sony or Microsoft.
Verify the installed product, not just the console
On consoles, a system can hold more than one edition or allow a previous-generation version to run through compatibility features. On PC, different launchers or editions can also identify the game differently. Compare the exact title, edition, and platform version shown on each player’s game information screen. If the publisher lists a separate generation group, install and launch the version that belongs to your friend’s group or move both players into the supported group.
Check account restrictions before troubleshooting the router
Parental controls, age restrictions, suspensions, and region-specific service limits can block multiplayer or social features independently of internet access. If only one account is affected, review its account status and family settings before changing network hardware.
2. Align updates, modes, and in-game cross-play controls
Install the same title update
- Close the game on every platform.
- Check for updates on PS5, Xbox, and the PC launcher.
- Wait for each installation to finish, then restart the game.
- Confirm that all players are entering the same online mode, playlist, region, or party type.
A player who is one update behind can still reach the game’s menus or play solo while being rejected by a cross-platform session. Some games also disable cross-play for selected competitive, local, or limited-time modes. If the cross-play option is unavailable only in one mode, test a standard mode that the publisher documents as cross-platform.
Enable the game’s cross-play option
Look in the game’s own Account, Privacy, Online, Gameplay, or Social section. Do not assume the console’s system-level multiplayer permission controls this switch.

Fortnite’s documented PlayStation path is:
- From the lobby, open Menu.
- Select the gear icon to open Settings.
- Open Account And Privacy.
- Under Gameplay Privacy, set Allow Cross Platform Play to Yes.
Epic notes that turning this setting off can leave some Fortnite modes in Solo mode. That behavior is a useful diagnostic clue: if the game changes available modes after you disable cross-play, the toggle is actively controlling matchmaking rather than merely displaying an informational status.
Make the setting consistent for both players
Ask every participant to check the setting, then leave the party and create it again. A party created while one account had cross-play disabled may not refresh immediately after the option is changed. If the control is locked or absent, return to the compatibility check: the selected mode, account type, or platform build may not expose cross-play.

Why PSN and Xbox friends may not appear
Cross-platform invitations often use a publisher-owned account and social graph separate from PSN, Xbox friends, or a PC launcher’s local list. Epic’s developer documentation describes Epic Accounts and social services that support cross-platform friends and invitations across Windows, PlayStation, and Xbox. In those games, adding someone only on a console network does not necessarily create a cross-platform friend relationship.
Epic/Fortnite account flow
Epic’s documented Fortnite process requires a registered Epic Games account. The practical sequence is:
- Make sure each player has a registered Epic Games account linked to the console or PC profile used to launch the game.
- Open the Epic launcher or the game’s Epic social interface and add the friend by the required Epic account name.
- Wait until the friend request is accepted in that account system.
- Return to the console or PC lobby and invite or join through the Epic friend entry, not only through the platform’s friend list.
Use the same account identity on every device. Signing into a different Epic account, or launching the game before the account link finishes, can create an apparently empty friend list even though the console account itself is online.

Apply the same principle to other publishers
Read the game’s support instructions for its own account name, ID format, and invitation menu. Some publishers require an exact handle, while others use a numeric ID or an in-game search. Do not guess a friend’s platform gamertag when the game asks for a publisher ID. If the invitation appears in the publisher’s social list but not in the console overlay, use the in-game party controls and keep the account link active.
4. Remove privacy and block settings that suppress invitations
Review the PS5 cross-play invitation control
On PS5, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy. Review Communication and multiplayer, including the control labeled Get crossplay game invitations. Sony’s privacy documentation explains that these profiles determine who can communicate with you or invite you. A setting that allows ordinary online play can still block a cross-play invitation.
After changing the setting, close and reopen the game. Have the other player send a new invitation rather than relying on one generated before the privacy change.
Check both players for blocks
Confirm that neither account has blocked the other. Sony states that a blocked player does not receive game invitations. Remove the block where appropriate, restart the social session, and send a fresh request through the game’s supported account system.
Check Xbox and PC privacy controls
On Xbox, inspect the account’s privacy and online-safety permissions for multiplayer, communication, and cross-network play. The exact labels can vary by account type and system software, so use the current Xbox settings wording shown on the console or Microsoft support page. On PC, check the publisher account’s privacy, presence, and friend-request controls in the launcher or game account portal. Family-managed accounts may need the organizer to approve cross-network communication.

5. Determine whether the problem is an outage
Compare the scope of the failure
Ask whether the issue affects one player, one platform, one game mode, or everyone in the party. If several players in different locations cannot sign in, see friends, or matchmake at the same time, check the game publisher’s service-status page and the PlayStation and Xbox status pages before changing local settings.
Sony’s PS5 error guidance specifically recommends checking PlayStation status for failures or maintenance. A maintenance window can leave menus available while matchmaking, account login, or invitations fail. Wait for the service to recover, then restart the game so it obtains a fresh session token.
Use a controlled comparison
If possible, test a different mode or a solo online activity. If solo online play works but every cross-platform party fails, focus on compatibility, account, and privacy checks. If all online functions fail on one console, move to the network steps below. Do not interpret one successful solo match as proof that the friend-invite service is healthy.

Restart in the correct order
- Pause downloads, streaming, cloud backups, and other heavy traffic on the network.
- Close the game on the affected console or PC.
- Power off the modem and router, wait for them to finish shutting down, then power them back on.
- Wait until the internet connection is fully restored.
- Restart the console or PC, launch the game, and test matchmaking again.
This clears temporary routing and session problems without changing permanent router configuration.

Prefer Ethernet for the test
Sony recommends a wired connection where possible. Connect the console or PC directly to the router with Ethernet and repeat the test. A Cat6 Ethernet cable is an optional, inexpensive way to perform that test; it cannot make an unsupported game cross-play compatible, override a blocked account, or repair a service outage.

If Ethernet works while Wi-Fi does not, investigate wireless interference, distance from the access point, channel congestion, or other traffic. Keep the wired result as a useful comparison even if you later return to Wi-Fi.
Look for multiple NAT routers
Sony warns that multiple NAT routers can cause connection problems. This can happen when an internet gateway feeds a second router or mesh system that also performs routing. For a test, identify which device is acting as the router and avoid stacking two independent NAT layers. Use the equipment manufacturer’s supported bridge or access-point mode rather than randomly disabling security features.
If you do not know which device provides routing, record the model and topology before changing anything. A wrong change can disconnect every household device, so restore the original configuration if the internet stops working.

Port forwarding, assigning a static local IP, and changing DNS appear in Sony guidance for particular error codes, but they are not universal cross-play fixes. Do not apply a port list copied from another game or open broad inbound access merely because a friend has a different NAT result.
- Write down the exact error code and the platform that displays it.
- Check the game publisher’s current instructions for that code.
- Check the platform maker’s instructions for the same code.
- Back up or photograph the existing router settings.
- Change one setting at a time and retest with the same friend and mode.
If the error disappears after one change, keep a record of what changed. If it returns after a router reboot or firmware update, the setting may not have been applied correctly or the underlying service may have changed.
Platform-focused checks
PS5
- Confirm the installed game version belongs to the same generation group as your friends’ versions.
- Check the in-game cross-play switch before changing console network settings.
- Review Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy, especially Communication and multiplayer and Get crossplay game invitations.
- Check the blocked-player list.
- Check PlayStation service status, then test a restart and wired connection.
Xbox
- Verify whether the game groups Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One separately.
- Confirm cross-play is enabled in the game and that the selected mode supports it.
- Review Xbox privacy, communication, multiplayer, and cross-network permissions for the affected account.
- Use the publisher account if the game maintains a separate cross-platform friend list.
- Check Xbox service status before changing the router.
PC
- Update the game through the correct launcher and verify the linked publisher account.
- Check that the firewall or security software is not blocking the game’s launcher, social service, or voice component; make only the minimum supported exception.
- Use the publisher ID when the game’s support instructions require it.
- Test with Ethernet and pause downloads from the game launcher, operating system, and cloud-storage tools.
- Check the game and platform service-status pages if multiple friends fail simultaneously.
A complete cross-play recovery checklist
- Write down each player’s platform, console generation, game edition, region, and mode.
- Confirm the publisher lists that exact combination as cross-play compatible.
- Install the same title update on every device.
- Enable the game’s cross-play control for every player.
- Add friends through the required publisher account and accept the requests there.
- Review PS5 privacy, Xbox cross-network permissions, PC launcher privacy, and block lists.
- Check the game, PlayStation, and Xbox service-status pages.
- Restart the game, console or PC, modem, and router.
- Pause heavy traffic and test with Ethernet where possible.
- Investigate multiple NAT routers.
- Only after recording an exact error code, consider the platform’s supported port, static-IP, or DNS guidance.
This order prevents wasted effort: it rules out an unsupported combination before you alter privacy or network settings, and it separates a service outage from a problem confined to one account or home network.
