Start with the least destructive fixes: update the remaster and operating system, update the graphics driver on PC, verify the game installation, and temporarily close overlays and background utilities. For uneven performance, test with extra monitors and multi-GPU features disabled, then change one graphics setting at a time. For missing or incorrect controller buttons, test the game with Steam Input disabled and avoid running multiple remapping layers. On PlayStation, use the order update, power cycle, reinstall, then rebuild the database in Safe Mode.
The exact remaster and platform were not specified, so menu names and controller features can differ. Use the branch that matches where you play and note the stage at which the problem occurs: launch, loading, gameplay, cutscene, or a quick-time event.
Start with a controlled diagnosis
Write down what happens before changing anything. “It crashes” is less useful than “it closes while loading a save after the latest update” or “the frame rate hitches whenever a cutscene begins.” Record the platform, game version, operating-system build, graphics-card model and driver version, controller model, and any error code. This information makes a support request actionable and prevents you from repeating fixes that already failed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Install the latest update for the remaster.
- On PC, install pending Windows updates and the latest driver from your graphics-card manufacturer.
- Confirm that the computer meets the remaster’s minimum and recommended requirements.
- Verify or repair the installation in the launcher that owns the game.
- Close browsers, chat overlays, capture tools, hardware monitors, and other nonessential utilities for one test session.
- Change only one setting between tests and keep a short note of the result.
These checks reflect the first-line items in Quantic Dream’s official PC troubleshooting checklists: requirements, administrator permissions, graphics drivers, file verification, background applications, and operating-system updates.

Fix crashes on a Windows PC
1. Update the game, Windows, and the graphics driver
Install the remaster’s newest patch before changing graphics settings. Then open Windows Update and apply pending updates, restart, and install the current driver directly from your GPU manufacturer’s support page. A driver update can alter shader compilation, display handling, and controller behavior, so restart even if the installer does not explicitly require it.
Do not assume that a recent driver is automatically compatible with every remaster. If the crash began immediately after a driver change, record the version and report the timing to the developer rather than repeatedly installing random versions. A clean, known version is easier to diagnose than an untracked series of changes.
2. Verify or repair the installation
Damaged or incomplete files can cause a crash at launch, while loading a save, or when a particular cutscene asset is called. Use the verification or repair command in the store that owns the game:
- Steam: open Library, right-click the remaster, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files (the exact wording can change).
- Epic Games Store: open the game’s three-dot menu in Library and choose Manage followed by Verify.
- Another launcher: use its equivalent Verify, Repair, or Scan command.
Wait for the process to finish, allow files to redownload, and launch the game once before adding mods or overlays back. Verification normally targets installation files; it does not guarantee that a damaged save will be repaired, so keep backups of important saves when the platform provides a cloud or local-save option.
3. Remove background conflicts
Close browsers with video or many open tabs, chat clients, recording and streaming software, RGB utilities, hardware-monitoring tools, and overlay features from launchers or GPU software. Run one test with only the launcher and game active. If the crash disappears, re-enable utilities one at a time until the conflicting program is identified.
Do not treat an overlay conflict as proof that the remaster or hardware is defective. An overlay can hook the same rendering or input path used by an older engine, and a capture tool can change frame timing even when average frame rate looks normal.
4. Test administrator launch only as a diagnostic
If the game cannot create or read a required file, right-click its executable and test Run as administrator once. This is a diagnostic step, not a recommended permanent configuration. If it makes no difference, restore normal permissions. Running every game with elevated rights can hide the underlying folder-permission problem and increases the impact of unrelated software bugs.

5. Separate launch, save, cutscene, and gameplay failures
Try a new save or an earlier checkpoint if the crash happens only after loading one file. If every save crashes at the same location, note the level, cutscene, and approximate time. If the game crashes only when an overlay is visible, repeat with overlays disabled. If it crashes before the main menu, prioritize updates, driver installation, verification, and background-app testing over in-game graphics changes.
Check requirements before blaming the port
Compare your CPU, GPU, memory, storage, and operating-system version with the remaster’s published minimum and recommended requirements. A system that launches the game can still fall below the recommended specification and produce unstable frame pacing or loading failures. Save a screenshot or note of the requirements alongside your hardware details when contacting support; “my PC is powerful” is not a reproducible specification.
Use a clean baseline after each repair
After verification, a driver update, or a reinstall, start the remaster with its default graphics and input settings. Do not restore an old configuration file, mod, overlay profile, or third-party controller preset until the clean test succeeds. This separates a damaged install from a setting that is simply being carried forward. Once the baseline works, add one change, test, and record it.
Reduce stuttering and uneven frame pacing on PC
Update before tuning
Apply the game patch, Windows updates, and graphics driver first, then verify the files. Stutter caused by an incomplete installation or outdated driver cannot be solved reliably by lowering every graphics option.
Test displays and multi-GPU features
Disconnect an extra monitor for one test session. If your system uses SLI or another multi-GPU configuration, disable it temporarily. PlayStation’s PC support documentation warns that multiple displays or SLI can cause game problems. If the stutter disappears, the display or multi-GPU arrangement is part of the reproduction case; report the exact arrangement to the developer instead of assuming the game needs a lower preset.
Change one graphics option at a time
Choose a repeatable scene, such as the same corridor or camera movement, and alter one setting. Test for long enough to reach the same effect again, then write down the result. Changing resolution, shadows, effects, anti-aliasing, and frame-rate limits together makes it impossible to know which setting helped.
There is no universal “best” preset for an unspecified remaster. The useful setting depends on the title’s patch level, GPU, display resolution, and whether the problem is a rendering hitch or a background-process interruption. Keep a stable baseline and change only the option that plausibly affects the symptom.

Eliminate software interruptions
For one clean test, close browsers, chat overlays, recording software, capture cards’ control panels, and hardware-monitoring utilities. Disable only unnecessary overlays; keep security software and essential drivers active. If frame pacing improves, restore programs individually to find the conflict.

Distinguish shader or asset hitches from sustained low performance
A brief hitch the first time an effect appears is different from repeated pauses every few seconds. Record whether the problem occurs only on a first visit, during a cutscene, after loading, or continuously during movement. That distinction tells support whether to investigate asset or shader compilation, a damaged file, or a persistent performance bottleneck.
Test in a repeatable order
- Restart the PC and run the game with the same display arrangement you normally use.
- Replay one repeatable scene rather than comparing unrelated areas.
- Disable overlays and background utilities for the first comparison.
- Disconnect an extra monitor or disable SLI for the second comparison.
- Change one graphics option, such as resolution or effects quality, for the next comparison.
Keep the result of each test. If a change improves one scene but worsens another, report both observations instead of calling the preset universally broken. A short description of the scene, display count, GPU arrangement, and setting changed is more useful than an unsupported claim that the game is “unoptimized.”
Fix a controller that is not detected or has wrong buttons
Confirm the controller before changing mappings
- Connect the controller by USB and confirm that Windows recognizes it before troubleshooting Bluetooth.
- Test the buttons in Windows’ controller properties or another known-working game.
- If USB works but Bluetooth does not, resolve pairing, battery, or wireless-driver issues before changing the remaster’s mappings.
- Check the remaster’s support notes for the exact controller model. PlayStation lists DualSense and DUALSHOCK 4 among supported PC controller options, but says that specific functions vary by title.
A controller that fails in Windows is not a remaster input-setting problem. Conversely, a controller that works elsewhere but fails only in this game points toward Steam Input, the title’s native input mode, or an in-game layout.
Test Steam Input in isolation
Steam Input can translate a controller before the game sees it. For a PlayStation controller, Capcom’s official Steam guidance recommends testing with Steam Input disabled. In Steam, open Library, right-click the remaster, choose Properties, open Controller, and test the available Steam Input setting with it disabled. Close and relaunch the game after changing the setting so the input mode is reinitialized.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If disabling Steam Input removes the problem, use the game’s native support instead of adding another mapper. If the game requires Steam Input for that controller, compare the behavior with Steam Input enabled and the game’s own remapping reset to default.
Correct wrong prompts or ignored remaps
Reset the in-game control layout, restart the game, and test a simple menu action before testing gameplay. Keep only one remapping layer active: the game’s native remapper, Steam Input, or a third-party mapper—not all three.

- This mini Console is approximately 45 percent smaller than the original PlayStation
- Includes two wired Controllers, a virtual memory card and an HDMI cable
Santa Monica Studio documented cases in which Steam Input prevented in-game control changes from taking effect or caused buttons to fail during quick-time events. If ordinary movement works but a quick-time event ignores a button, reproduce it with Steam Input disabled, then with the game’s layout reset. Record which combination works and keep that configuration consistent.
When button symbols do not match the controller
Wrong symbols can be a layout mismatch rather than a failed button. Check whether the game offers separate layouts for PlayStation and Xbox-style prompts, and whether Steam Input is translating the device. Do not buy a different controller solely because the on-screen glyphs are wrong; first verify the remaster’s supported devices and input mode.
Choosing a replacement controller
Do not assume every feature of a DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 is available in every PC remaster. PlayStation identifies both as supported PC controller options while warning that functions vary by title. Before buying a DualSense wireless controller, confirm that the remaster supports the device and the features you actually need. A replacement cannot fix a game-side mapping conflict, and a different controller may introduce a new prompt layout.
Recover from crashes on a PlayStation console
Use the least destructive order
- Check for and install a game update.
- Power the console off completely. Unplug it for about two minutes, reconnect it, and try the remaster again.
- If the crash continues, reinstall the game and its downloadable content.
- As the final software-recovery step, use the console’s Safe Mode database-rebuild option.
Square Enix describes database rebuilding as scanning the drive and creating a new content database; the operation can take time. Treat it as a late step because it is more disruptive than an update or power cycle. Follow the instructions for your specific PlayStation model and do not interrupt the process.
Protect saves before reinstalling
Check the platform’s supported cloud or local-save options before deleting the game. Reinstalling the application and downloadable content is different from deleting saved data, but confirm the prompts carefully. If one save is the only trigger, test another save before taking broader recovery steps and tell the publisher exactly which file fails.
Match the fix to the failure stage
A crash at launch calls for update and installation checks first. A crash after a long play session may also involve heat, storage, or a system-level fault and should be reported with the timing and any error code. A crash tied to one save or cutscene should be described precisely to the publisher after reinstalling and testing another save.

Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Changing everything at once: a new driver, graphics preset, mapper, and overlay setting leave no way to identify the cause. Make one reversible change per test.
- Assuming average frame rate explains stutter: a capture tool or overlay can create uneven frame pacing even when the displayed average looks acceptable.
- Running several input translators: Steam Input, a third-party mapper, and the game’s remapper can each reinterpret the same button. Keep one layer active.
- Rebuilding the console database first: update, power cycle, and reinstall are easier to reverse and should come earlier.
- Replacing hardware too soon: verify the controller in Windows and check title-specific support before purchasing another device.
- Ignoring the exact failure stage: a launch crash, a single-save crash, and a quick-time-event input failure require different evidence.
What to send the developer when fixes fail
After completing the relevant branch, make a concise report rather than listing every setting in random order. Include:

- Playstation Classic Console with 20 Classic Playstation Games Pre-Installed
- Remaster name, version, platform, and store or console model.
- Windows build and GPU model and driver version for PC reports.
- Controller model, USB or Bluetooth connection, and whether Steam Input was enabled or disabled.
- Exact failure stage: launch, loading, gameplay, cutscene, or quick-time event.
- Error text or code, frequency, and whether a new save reproduces it.
- Updates, verification, background-app testing, reinstall, or database rebuild already attempted.
- Whether an extra monitor, SLI or another multi-GPU feature, overlay, capture utility, or browser was active.
- The single setting changed immediately before an improvement or failure, plus the scene used for comparison.
This record lets the publisher distinguish a damaged installation from a title-specific defect and avoids asking you to repeat the same basic checks.
Prevent the problem from returning
- Keep the game and operating system patched, but note the version whenever a problem first appears.
- Maintain a known-good graphics profile instead of changing many options at once.
- Use one input-remapping layer and document whether the game or Steam owns the mapping.
- Keep important saves backed up through the platform’s supported method before reinstalling or performing system recovery.
- When adding a monitor, overlay, capture tool, or controller, test the remaster before adding another change.
- Keep a short troubleshooting log with the date, driver version, game version, and result of each test.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I lower every graphics setting to stop stutter?
No. Update the game, Windows, and graphics driver, verify the files, close background utilities, and test with extra monitors or SLI disabled first. Then change one graphics option at a time in a repeatable scene.
Why does my PlayStation controller work in Windows but not in the remaster?
The issue may be Steam Input or the game’s native input mode. Test the remaster with Steam Input disabled, relaunch it, and reset the in-game layout. Keep only one remapping layer active.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can a DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 use every feature on PC?
Not necessarily. PlayStation lists both as supported PC controller options but says specific functions vary by title. Check the remaster’s support notes before buying one.
What should I do if only one save crashes?
Test another save or an earlier checkpoint, verify the installation, and record the exact level, cutscene, and timing. Verification may not repair a damaged save, so preserve backups and send the save-specific details to the publisher.
When should I rebuild the PlayStation database?
Use it only after updating, power-cycling, and reinstalling the game and downloadable content. Square Enix describes the operation as scanning the drive and creating a new content database, and it can take time.
Is running the game as administrator a permanent fix?
No. Test administrator launch once as a diagnostic if the game cannot create or read a required file. If it changes nothing, restore normal permissions and investigate the underlying installation or folder issue.
How can I tell whether an overlay causes the crash or stutter?
Close browsers, chat overlays, recording tools, capture controls, and hardware monitors for one test session. If the problem disappears, restore programs one at a time to identify the conflict.
The Bottom Line
Use a reversible, evidence-based order: patch and update first, verify files, isolate background apps and displays, test one graphics setting at a time, and separate Steam Input from native controller mapping. On PlayStation, power-cycle before reinstalling and reserve database rebuilding for the final software step. If the problem remains, report the exact stage, hardware, versions, and configuration to the publisher.
