Start with the non-destructive checks: install the newest game and PS5 system updates, restart the console, confirm that the game has free storage, and restore licenses if you see a padlock. If the game is installed on USB extended storage, move it to the PS5’s internal storage. Reinstall the game only after protecting your saved data. For system-wide performance or storage symptoms, use Safe Mode’s Clear System Software Cache, Rebuild Database, or Repair Console Storage as appropriate. A save-synchronization error is a separate problem from a crash and needs its own diagnosis.
This workflow applies to PS5 survival RPGs generally because the title and patch are not specified. A bug tied to one game, one save, or one patch must ultimately be handled by that game’s publisher; failures across several games point instead to the console, storage device, or system software.
First, identify exactly what is failing
Do not begin by deleting the game or saved data. The timing and scope of the failure determine the safest fix. A crash at launch has a different likely cause from a freeze during a world transition, a failed cloud upload, or online-only lag.
Recommended Free Tools
| Symptom | What to record | Initial scope |
|---|---|---|
| The game closes at launch | Whether a padlock appears, the exact CE/NW/WS code, and whether the game is on internal or USB storage | Game installation, license, storage destination, or a title-specific defect |
| A freeze or crash occurs during a repeatable action | Location, quest, inventory action, loading transition, video or screenshot, and the steps that reproduce it | Often a game or save-state issue; compare with a new save if possible |
| The game saves locally but will not sync | The complete save-sync code and whether the failure affects one slot or every slot | Cloud Storage, local free space, or saved-data synchronization |
| Several games freeze, crash, or show storage errors | Which titles fail, when the failures began, and any startup or storage message | Console storage, system software, or hardware; use PlayStation Repairs if basic steps fail |
| Only online play is slow or disconnects | Whether offline play remains stable and the exact NW/WS code, if shown | Network or service path rather than rendering performance |
Capture the exact error code rather than paraphrasing it. PlayStation Support asks for the code, reproduction steps, and supporting media when you make a support request. The same information lets a game publisher distinguish a known quest or patch defect from a damaged installation.

Safe checks before reinstalling anything
Install both updates
Install the latest update for the game and the latest PS5 system software before trying a destructive remedy. On the Home screen, highlight the game, press the Options button, and choose the command to check for an update. For the console, open Settings and the System Software Update area, then allow the PS5 to complete the update and restart if requested. A game patch can correct a crash that no console setting can fix, while a system update can address platform-level compatibility or storage handling.
Restart completely
Use the power menu to restart the PS5 rather than merely closing the game card. Wait until the Home screen returns, launch the game again, and test the same action that previously failed. If the console is unresponsive, hold the power button until it shuts down, wait for the power indicator to stop, then start it normally. Do not unplug the console while it is writing data.
Check free space and installation location
Open the PS5 Storage settings and verify that the internal drive has room for the game’s update and temporary installation files. A drive that is nearly full can cause an update, world-streaming operation, or save write to fail even when the installed game appears to fit. If the game is on USB extended storage, move it to internal PS5 storage and test again. PlayStation’s launch troubleshooting guidance specifically lists moving a game from USB extended storage as a step for launch problems.
When an installation error names a destination, try the other supported destination—console storage or extended storage—after confirming that it has enough free capacity. Keep the original installation until you know the move or reinstall has completed successfully.
Restore the license when a padlock appears
A padlock or ownership warning can prevent a correctly installed game from starting. Sign in to the account that purchased or claimed the game, then use Settings, Users and Accounts, Other, and Restore Licenses. After the process finishes, restart the PS5 and launch the game from that account. Restoring a license does not repair a damaged save; it only revalidates access to the game and its content.

Reinstall the game without sacrificing progress
Reinstalling is appropriate when updates, a restart, storage checks, and license restoration do not resolve a launch or repeated crash. Reinstalling the application is different from deleting saved data. Preserve saves first and do not select an option that removes them unless you have a verified backup.
Back up before deletion or reset
Use the PS5 Saved Data and Game/App Settings area to copy PS5 or PS4 saved data to a compatible USB drive, or upload it to Cloud Storage if your account has that feature. Wait for the upload or copy to report completion. If the game offers multiple profiles or manual save slots, verify that the newest slot is included. Sony warns that some Safe Mode options result in data loss, so make this backup before any reset, database operation you are uncertain about, or storage repair.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDelete only the application
- Highlight the game on the Home screen and press Options.
- Choose Delete and confirm removal of the application. Do not choose a saved-data deletion command.
- Restart the PS5 once the application is gone.
- Redownload the game from your Game Library or reinstall from disc, then install every available patch before loading a save.
- Test the game at the point that previously failed. Only restore or select the old save after confirming that the clean installation launches normally.
If a new game starts but one old save repeatedly crashes the application, stop overwriting that slot. Keep the original as a backup, try a separate slot only if the game supports it, and send the publisher the save-related reproduction details. Repeatedly replacing the only copy can remove the evidence needed to diagnose a corrupted world state.
Use Safe Mode for system-level performance and storage symptoms
Safe Mode loads a limited set of PS5 functions so you can repair system data without starting the normal interface. To enter it, turn the PS5 off completely. Press and hold the power button; release it after the second beep. Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button when prompted. Read each option’s warning before confirming it, and keep the USB or Cloud Storage backup available because some options erase data.
Clear System Software Cache
Choose Clear System Software Cache when you are seeing system-feature issues or a general performance drop rather than a single reproducible quest bug. Sony describes this option for those symptoms. The console clears temporary system data and restarts; it does not reinstall the game. Test the affected survival RPG after the restart and compare it with another title.

Rebuild Database
Rebuild Database scans the drive and recreates the content database used to organize installed games and media. Use it when the Home screen, game list, loading behavior, or storage index appears inconsistent. The scan can take time, especially when the drive contains many installations. Do not interrupt power during the process. Back up first because Sony’s general Safe Mode warning applies to the menu as a whole, and choose only the database option you intend to run.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteRepair Console Storage
Repair Console Storage is intended for startup or storage problems. Sony’s support description states that this option does not erase data. It is not a substitute for a game reinstall when only one title is affected, but it is relevant when the PS5 reports storage errors, fails to start normally, or several games show read/write symptoms.
Do not jump to reset options
Safe Mode also contains reset and reinstall choices that can remove applications, settings, or user data. Use them only after a verified backup and only when PlayStation Support directs you to do so. A reset is disproportionate for a single-game crash that has not been compared with other titles.
Diagnose save and cloud-synchronization errors separately
A game can run correctly while its save cannot synchronize. Treat the code and the save destination as the primary clues instead of repeating crash fixes.
| Error code | Meaning | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| CE-118851-4 | The console cannot synchronize save data with Cloud Storage. | Cloud availability, account sign-in, free space, and whether another save uploads successfully |
| CE-122154-5 | A saved-data synchronization failure. | Which slot fails, the local and cloud copies, and the selected save destination |
Protect the local copy
Do not accept a prompt that overwrites a known-good local save with an older cloud version until you have checked the timestamps and made a separate backup. Copy the local save to USB where supported, or preserve the cloud copy before choosing a conflict-resolution option. If only one world or slot fails while a new game saves normally, the failing slot may contain damaged data or a game-specific world-state problem.

- DESIGNED FOR THE PS5 CONSOLE: Engineered to fit perfectly and easily into the PS5 console's SSD expansion slot for a quick and easy install.
- REVOLUTIONARY COOLING: Made from High-Quality CNC'd aluminum, the Sabrent Heatsink for the PS5 console was specifically designed to maximize cooling performance and simplify installation.
- UPGRADE YOUR CONSOLE! Rather than creating a heatsink that would only trap the heat in the metal cover, we designed a heatsink that replaces the native PS5 consoles cover. This allows for better cooling using the native fan as well as being a larger heatsink.
- INDUSTRIAL QUALITY: This SSD heatsink method also uses Sabrent's "Sandwich Design" which ensures even pressure throughout the SSD for efficient and consistent heat transfer unlike methods used by other brands.
- CONVENIENCE: Comes with an installation guide as well as screws and thermal tape for easy convenient installation.
Check both destinations
Confirm that the console has free space and that the game is writing to the intended location. Sony’s storage guidance notes that some installation errors may require changing the destination between console storage and extended storage; the same distinction matters when diagnosing where a save or its related installation data is being written. Do not repeatedly retry a full save when the drive is nearly full.
Escalate a repeatable bad save
Record the code, slot name, approximate play time, and the last action before the failure. If a fresh save works but the original repeatedly fails, retain the original backup and contact the game publisher. Include the game version, PS5 system software version, reproduction steps, and a video or screenshot. The publisher can determine whether the world is recoverable or whether a patch is required; no title-specific fix can be assumed without the exact game and patch information.

When performance is poor in one game
Install the latest patch, restart, verify internal free space, and test after moving the game off USB extended storage. Note whether the slowdown occurs in one biome, during a transition, after a long session, or whenever a particular effect appears. A repeatable location-specific slowdown is useful evidence for the publisher even when the game never closes.
When performance is poor everywhere
Compare two or more games. If menus, loading, or several titles slow down together, use Safe Mode’s Clear System Software Cache and, when the content index appears damaged, Rebuild Database. Storage errors, startup failures, or crashes across several games justify Repair Console Storage and then PlayStation Repairs if the symptoms continue.

When only online activity lags
Check whether offline play and local menus remain responsive. If they do, capture any NW or WS code and report the online symptom separately; a network or service issue will not be fixed by reinstalling a local save. Keep the report limited to the time, mode, and reproducible online action so support can distinguish connectivity from rendering.

Storage capacity and M.2 expansion
Insufficient capacity can block patches, temporary files, and new saves. If deleting unused games is not enough, a PS5-compatible M.2 NVMe SSD with a heatsink is the relevant expansion path documented by Sony. Compatibility depends on the PS5 model and Sony’s interface, size, speed, and cooling requirements; verify those requirements before buying or installing any drive.
After expansion, confirm in Storage settings that the drive is formatted and available, then choose deliberately whether the survival RPG belongs on console storage or the compatible extended destination. A larger drive does not repair a corrupted save or a title-specific bug, but it can remove repeated update and installation failures caused by a full destination.
Decide who should handle the problem
Contact the game publisher when one title is affected
Use the publisher’s support channel when other games work and the failure follows one title, one quest, one world, or one save. Provide the exact title and patch, PS5 system software version, error code, reproduction sequence, screenshots or video, and whether reinstalling and testing a new save changed the result. Ask whether the issue is a known defect before deleting the only copy of a damaged world.
Use PlayStation Repairs for console-wide symptoms
Escalate to PlayStation Repairs or PlayStation hardware diagnostics when multiple games crash, the PS5 repeatedly reports storage errors, startup fails, or Safe Mode repairs do not restore normal behavior. List every affected game and the dates the symptoms began. A pattern across unrelated titles is stronger evidence of a console, drive, or system problem than of a single survival RPG.
What to have ready for either support route
- The complete CE, NW, or WS code, including every digit and hyphen
- The game title, edition, and installed patch number
- PS5 system software version and whether the game is on internal or USB storage
- Exact reproduction steps and the point at which the failure occurs
- A screenshot or video, plus confirmation of which updates, restart, storage move, reinstall, or Safe Mode option you tried
- A protected copy of the affected save when a save error is involved
That record prevents support from sending you through the same steps repeatedly and preserves the distinction between a software crash, a save-sync failure, and a console storage fault.
