Start with the least destructive fix: record where the failure occurs, retry without overlays or remapping software, refresh the browser demo or restart Steam, and test keyboard input. Tales of Tonbrook is a free preview available as an HTML5 browser demo and a Steam demo. Reports published in October 2026 describe the Steam slice as one in-game season (28 in-game days), while the browser build is still actively developed. Because the demos can change and no official crash, save-recovery, or controller-compatibility guide is documented, the steps below are cautious PC troubleshooting rather than guaranteed game-specific fixes.

Which game and demo are these fixes for?

The “Stardew Valley meets D&D” description refers to Tales of Tonbrook, a life-sim/RPG preview that combines farming, fishing, relationships, academy routines, exploration and party combat. Contemporary reports describe two free ways to try it:

Route How you play Documented scope What to expect
Browser demo Run the HTML5 build in a desktop web browser Actively developed; content and controls may change Fastest way to test the game, but controller support is described as experimental
Steam demo Install and launch the demo through the Steam client Reported as one in-game season, or 28 in-game days Uses an installed build and Steam’s file-verification tools are available

Neither route has published save-file locations, a documented recovery format, a developer crash-log specification, or independent controller-compatibility statistics. Do not treat a menu, control binding, or planned full-release date mentioned in an older video or post as permanent. Preview builds can replace or move features.

ConcernedApe Stardew Valley Cooperative Board Game Ages 13+ 1 to 4 Players
  • For 1 to 4 players
  • Ages 13+
  • About 45 minutes per player
  • A cooperative board game
  • Based on the hit video game
  • Whether you are using the browser demo or the Steam demo.
  • Your operating system, browser name and version, or Steam client build.
  • Where the problem occurs: launch, title screen, loading a save, entering a location, opening a menu, or during play.
  • For controller failures, the controller model, wired or wireless connection, and whether keyboard input still works.
  • The exact wording of any error and whether the problem happens every time or only once.

Reproduce the issue once with no mods, overlays, macro tools, or input remappers running. Preview troubleshooting is easier when there is one variable at a time. If the game works after a clean launch, re-enable tools individually rather than restoring them all at once.

How to fix crashes in the browser demo

These are general browser and PC recovery steps. They are not documented, Tales of Tonbrook-specific fixes, and they do not imply that a particular browser is officially supported.

1. Save your evidence before refreshing

If a crash leaves an error message, take a screenshot or copy the text. Note the page URL, browser version and the action that triggered it. A browser refresh can remove a visible message, so capture it first. Do not clear site data yet; doing so can remove locally stored game data in some web applications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Retry in a current desktop browser

  1. Close other tabs that use substantial memory or graphics resources.
  2. Update your browser through its normal About or Settings page.
  3. Close the demo tab completely, open a new tab, and load the demo again.
  4. If the crash repeats, try a second current desktop browser with extensions disabled or in a private window. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a claim that one browser is the required choice.

If the game works only in a private window, an extension, cached script, or stored site setting is a likely trigger. Disable extensions one at a time and retry. Avoid deleting all browsing data until you have protected any visible save data.

  • MAIN CHARACTERS WANTED: Recommended for 2-5 players, ages 12 and up

3. Remove common interference

  • Temporarily disable browser overlays, screen recorders, performance injectors and game-focused extensions.
  • Disconnect a controller and launch with the keyboard. A faulty input device or remapper can crash some browser games during initialization.
  • Close unnecessary applications if the crash happens while loading a large area or switching windows.

4. Separate a game crash from a browser or graphics problem

If several unrelated WebGL or HTML5 pages also fail, restart the computer and update the graphics driver through your computer manufacturer or graphics-card vendor. If only Tales of Tonbrook fails at the same reproducible action, record that action rather than repeatedly changing system settings. There is no published Tales of Tonbrook crash-log format in the available documentation, so do not invent a log path or delete browser folders as a supposed repair.

5. Protect saves before trying storage resets

Do not clear cookies, site storage or browser profiles while investigating a missing save. Browser games can keep data in local storage or another browser-managed location, and the game’s own save location is not documented. First look for an in-game export, backup or save-management option if the menu provides one. If no such option exists, stop before deleting data and move to the save-protection procedure below.

How to fix crashes in the Steam demo

Steam provides more reversible checks than the browser route, but the same caution applies: no official Tales of Tonbrook crash guide or known-issues list is documented.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Restart Steam and the computer

  1. Exit the demo.
  2. Use Steam’s Steam menu and choose Exit, not just closing the library window.
  3. Start Steam again, wait for downloads or updates to finish, and launch the demo.
  4. If it still crashes, restart the computer before changing files.

2. Verify the demo’s installed files

  1. Open your Steam Library.
  2. Right-click the Tales of Tonbrook demo and choose Properties.
  3. Open Installed Files.
  4. Select Verify integrity of demo files (the exact wording can vary with Steam’s current interface).
  5. Allow the scan and any replacement download to finish, then relaunch.

Verification replaces damaged or incomplete installation files. It is different from deleting a save folder, so it should be attempted before manual file removal. It will not repair a corrupted save unless the save itself is part of the installed files, which is not established for this demo.

3. Test without overlays and remappers

Temporarily disable the Steam Overlay and close third-party overlays, capture utilities and controller remappers. Then launch once with keyboard and mouse. If the crash disappears, restore tools one by one to identify the conflict. Keep a note of the setting you changed so you can undo it without guessing.

4. Check whether the trigger is specific

  • Crash before the title screen: prioritize file verification, a Steam restart and removal of overlays.
  • Crash while loading one save: stop repeated attempts if the save is important; protect any visible save folder before further changes.
  • Crash only when a controller is connected: disconnect it, launch with keyboard, then follow the controller procedure.
  • Crash after an update: record the demo version and date. A preview update may have changed content or controls, and a clean reinstall should be considered only after protecting saves.

What to do when a save disappears

No published source identifies a Tales of Tonbrook save directory, file format, backup system or recovery tool. That means instructions telling you to edit XML, copy a Stardew Valley save, or delete a particular folder are unsafe for this game. A Stardew Valley support guide can illustrate the general principle—make a backup before editing and work only in the game’s documented save folder—but its file format and repair steps do not transfer to Tales of Tonbrook.

First determine whether the save is actually missing

  • Confirm that you launched the same demo route. A browser save and a Steam save should not be assumed to synchronize.
  • Check that you are using the same browser profile, computer account and Steam account as before.
  • Look for an in-game load, continue or profile selector rather than relying only on the most prominent button.
  • Wait for the game to finish loading and check whether the file appears after a complete restart.

Do not reinstall, clear browser storage or remove Steam folders during this check. Those actions can make recovery harder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect anything that still exists

  1. Close the game normally if possible.
  2. Look for a clearly named Tales of Tonbrook folder in the locations your operating system exposes through the game or launcher. Do not guess a hidden path from another game.
  3. Copy the entire visible folder to a separate location, such as a dated folder on another drive.
  4. Keep the original untouched. Work only on the copy if the developer later supplies repair instructions.

If the game offers an export, backup or cloud option in its own menus, use that documented option. If it does not, avoid third-party “save fixer” utilities and avoid transplanting files from Stardew Valley; similarly named games do not use interchangeable saves.

When a save vanishes after a crash

Restart the same route once, without overlays or a controller, and check the load menu. If the save is still absent, record the last successful day or activity, the demo route, the date, and whether the crash occurred during saving or loading. Do not keep launching and overwriting slots in the hope that one will return. Repeated writes can replace whatever recovery state remains.

When the browser demo was refreshed or its data was cleared

Browser storage can be tied to a profile and site data can be removed by privacy tools, automatic cleanup or a profile reset. The available documentation does not establish a recovery method for Tales of Tonbrook. Check your browser’s own profile and backup systems only if you understand exactly what they restore; do not delete additional site data as a test. If the game had no export and the browser data is gone, the developer may be the only source able to confirm whether recovery is possible.

How to troubleshoot controller problems

The browser demo is described as having experimental controller support. That wording means a controller may work in one build or setup and fail in another; it is not a compatibility guarantee. Start with keyboard input so you can distinguish a game or save problem from an input problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this order of tests

  1. Close the demo.
  2. Disconnect the controller.
  3. Launch the demo and confirm that keyboard and mouse input work at the title screen and in play.
  4. Close the demo again.
  5. Reconnect the controller before launching. For a wireless pad, charge it and pair it to the operating system first.
  6. Try a wired XInput-compatible controller if one is available. This is a practical diagnostic suggestion, not a claim that a particular model is required or officially supported.
  7. Close controller remappers, macro software and other programs that create virtual gamepads.
  8. Launch again and test one button at a time, noting whether menus and gameplay respond differently.

Interpret the result

Result Likely next step
Keyboard and controller both fail Treat it as a launch or game-state problem; use the crash steps for your demo route.
Keyboard works, controller is not detected Reconnect before launch, remove remappers, and test a wired XInput-compatible pad.
Controller works in menus but not gameplay Check the game’s own control screen for a separate gameplay binding; menus and play may use different actions in a changing preview build.
Controller causes a crash Disconnect it, launch with keyboard, disable overlays and remappers, then report the exact controller and connection type.

Do not transfer unrelated Steam Input advice

An official Stardew Valley troubleshooting guide advises players of that separate game to open its Steam controller settings, select Enable Steam Input, and restore the recommended or default configuration when needed. That advice is specific to Stardew Valley. It should not be presented as a confirmed Tales of Tonbrook requirement, especially for the browser demo. For Tales of Tonbrook, use the game’s available control settings and the connection tests above unless its developer publishes different instructions.

Browser demo or Steam demo: which should you use while troubleshooting?

Question Browser demo Steam demo
Fastest access Open the HTML5 demo in a current desktop browser Install Steam and download the demo
Preview scope Actively developed and subject to change Reported as one season, equal to 28 in-game days
Controller maturity Experimental support is reported No independent compatibility statistics are documented
Crash recovery tools Refresh and browser troubleshooting; avoid clearing site data Restart Steam and verify installed files
Save recovery documentation No published location or recovery format No published location or recovery format

Choose the browser route when you want the quickest test and can use keyboard input. Choose Steam when you need an installed build and want access to file verification. Neither route should be treated as a permanent, finalized release: menus, controls and content can change while the demos are developed.

A safe escalation checklist

If the problem survives the reversible steps, prepare a concise report instead of deleting more files:

  • Demo route: browser or Steam.
  • Operating system, browser and version, or Steam client details.
  • Demo version or the date you last updated it.
  • Controller model, wired or wireless connection, and whether remapping software was running.
  • Exact reproduction steps, including the last button pressed or location entered.
  • Whether keyboard input works and whether the issue occurs in a clean launch.
  • Any error text, screenshot or log that the game or launcher actually provides.

Send that information through the developer’s official support channel when one is available. The published material used for this guide does not identify a specific support address or crash-log submission page, so do not invent one or upload personal save files publicly. If you share a save for diagnosis, make a copy first and remove unrelated personal data.

Preventing repeat problems in a changing demo

  • Use one consistent browser profile for the browser demo and avoid automatic site-data cleaners while testing it.
  • Keep a dated copy of any visible save folder before updates or experiments.
  • Launch once with keyboard after a major demo update before reconnecting a controller.
  • Keep overlays and remappers disabled until the game is stable, then re-enable them individually.
  • Record the demo route and version whenever a crash or missing save occurs; a preview build can change between two attempts.
  • Do not apply Stardew Valley file repairs, XML edits or save locations to Tales of Tonbrook unless its developer explicitly documents an equivalent format.
