Start by disabling the newly installed NPC mod and its direct dependencies, then reproduce the problem. If the crash, missing character, or quest failure disappears, re-enable mods in groups and bisect the list until you isolate the incompatible file or combination. After that, verify the mod’s game-version requirements, confirm ArchiveXL and TweakXL start cleanly, reinstall the affected package without leftover files, and inspect the relevant logs. For a quest or interaction already saved in a broken state, return to a save from before the first interaction; editing quest flags is more likely to damage the save than repair it.
Identify the symptom before changing files
The visible symptom usually points to a different part of the mod stack. Record exactly when the failure occurs—launch, loading a save, equipping an item, opening a vendor, entering an Atelier, or starting a conversation—before you remove anything. That timing gives you a reproducible test for every change.

Do not treat a marker, a loaded outfit, or a successful launch as proof that the entire NPC package is working. A marker can load while the spawn record is absent, and a package can load until a later equip, vendor, or quest script is called.
Back up saves and isolate the new mod
Make a separate copy of your save directory before troubleshooting. Keep the untouched copy outside the game’s normal save location so a failed test cannot overwrite your recovery point. Do not use your only save for repeated experiments involving quests or scripted interactions.

- Disable the newly installed NPC mod. Also disable its direct dependencies and any companion add-ons installed at the same time. If you use a mod manager, disable entries there; if you installed manually, move the mod’s files out of the game folders rather than deleting your backup.
- Reproduce the original symptom. Use the same save, location, action, and travel route. If the game is still broken with the mod and its direct dependencies disabled, the new package may not be the only cause; continue with the base-game verification section below.
- Re-enable in groups. Turn on half of the disabled entries, test, and note the result. If the failure returns, the bad component is in that half; if it does not, it is in the other half.
- Bisect the failing group. Halve the remaining candidates repeatedly until one mod, dependency, or interaction between two mods is left. Test a suspected archive group before script and framework plug-ins when the symptom is an immediate launch crash.
- Record each result. Write down the enabled set, game version, save used, and exact error. This prevents a later test from confusing a fixed symptom with a different failure.
Bisecting is reversible and gives stronger evidence than removing many files at once. If two mods work separately but fail together, keep both in the final test set and report the combination to their authors rather than blaming only the last package installed.
Check game-version requirements and framework startup
Open the NPC mod’s current requirements and compare them with the installed Cyberpunk 2077 version and the versions of every required framework. A package made for an older game patch can fail even when its files are intact. Check the requirements again after a game update; a framework update may be needed before the NPC package can load.
Confirm ArchiveXL and TweakXL
For a marker-without-NPC failure, open the Cyber Engine Tweaks (CET) console after starting the game and look for startup errors from ArchiveXL and TweakXL. Both should load without errors before you test the NPC. A framework that fails at startup cannot provide the spawn or tweak data that the NPC package expects.
If CET itself does not open or reports a plug-in problem, solve that framework problem first. Do not continue changing the NPC files while the prerequisite that reads them is failing.

Check the expected directories
Compare the extracted package with its installation instructions instead of dragging the archive contents through several nested folders. Legacy archive and XL content belongs under the game’s archive/pc/mod structure. Other files, including YAML records, must remain in the directories specified by that package and its framework. A file one level too deep is effectively missing.
Look for duplicate copies with old names, renamed extensions, or folders left by a previous version. A current file and a stale conflicting file can make the result depend on load order and produce a symptom that seems random.
Perform a genuinely clean reinstall
Reinstalling over the top of an old folder is not a clean reinstall. Use this sequence when the version is correct but the NPC still does not spawn, an equip action crashes, or a vendor entry is absent.

- Disable the package and its add-ons. Close the game and your mod manager before editing files.
- Remove every old copy. Delete or move the NPC mod’s files, renamed backups, and folders belonging to older versions. Do the same for obsolete copies of its direct dependencies if the package instructs you to update them.
- Check for leftovers by extension and name. Search for the package’s
.archive,.xl, and.yamlfiles, including files in folders created by a previous manual install. Do not remove unrelated mods that happen to use the same framework. - Install the current package once. Extract the new archive so its files land in the expected directories. Do not nest the supplied folder inside another folder unless the instructions explicitly require it.
- Install all required frameworks at their compatible versions. Restore ArchiveXL, TweakXL, CET, Red4ext, redscript, or other prerequisites only when the NPC package lists them as requirements.
- Test with the smallest set. Launch with the repaired NPC and its required frameworks, then add optional patches and unrelated mods after the original symptom is gone.

Do not assume that a successful extraction means every file was copied. Re-open the downloaded package and compare its file list with the installed list, especially after antivirus software, a mod manager, or an interrupted extraction has been involved.

Read the logs and follow the dependency chain
Reproduce the failure once, close the game, and inspect the logs before making another change. Check CET, Red4ext, redscript, ArchiveXL, and TweakXL logs. Search for the first error that appears at the time of the failure, then read the lines immediately around it for the named module, file, or prerequisite.
Use the log location as evidence
- An error directly in the CET plug-in directory points to CET itself. Repair or update CET before troubleshooting an NPC submod.
- An error in a subfolder under the CET plug-in area identifies the mod in that subfolder more directly than a generic “script error” message.
- When a framework has no useful log, inspect the NPC package’s requirements and trace each prerequisite backward. A missing prerequisite can leave no clear error in the mod’s own folder.
Keep a copy of the relevant log from the failing run. After each change, compare a fresh run rather than relying on an old message. A log from a previous launch can make a fixed dependency look broken.
Prioritize errors by the symptom
- For a launch crash, start with the first broken
.archive, then test script and framework plug-ins. - For a missing NPC, prioritize ArchiveXL/TweakXL startup errors, version mismatch, and file placement.
- For an equip crash, prioritize missing
.xldata and the version of the core dependency that supplies it. - For a vendor or Atelier omission, prioritize YAML records and stale conflicting files.
Separate REDmod packages from legacy archives
Cyberpunk 2077 continues to support legacy archive mods, while REDmod packages use a different management path. REDmod cannot manage the load order of legacy archive mods. During a troubleshooting pass, identify whether the NPC is a REDmod package or a legacy archive package and manage it through the appropriate method.

Repair the base game only after mod isolation
If the launcher reports corrupted or missing scripts, or the game remains damaged after all mods are removed, verify the base installation through the store client. Verification restores or reacquires official files; it does not reinstall a community mod.
Steam
- Open Library and right-click Cyberpunk 2077.
- Choose Properties, then Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for the process to finish.
GOG Galaxy and Epic Games Store
Use the game’s management menu and choose the client’s Verify or Repair command. Labels can vary by client version, so confirm that the operation targets the Cyberpunk 2077 installation rather than a mod folder.
After verification, launch once with no community mods enabled. If the unmodded game still crashes, a clean game installation may be necessary. Preserve your save backup, uninstall the game, remove any remaining damaged installation files according to the platform’s procedure, reinstall, launch once, and only then add frameworks and mods one at a time.

Recover a quest or interaction that was saved in a broken state
A quest can remain stuck after you repair the files because the incorrect setup already wrote state into the save. Test save recovery separately from installation repair.
- Disable the suspect mod and fix its requirements first. Do not load a valuable save repeatedly while the package is still incomplete.
- Load a save from before the first interaction. This means before speaking to the modded NPC, accepting its quest, equipping its content, or entering the affected trigger area—whichever happened first.
- Enable the complete, correctly ordered mod set. Confirm framework startup logs are clean before repeating the interaction.
- Retest the objective. Use the same sequence that previously failed and watch for a new log error.
- Start a new game only when no earlier save exists. Do this after all requirements and versions are correct, not as a substitute for diagnosing a still-broken installation.
Avoid casually editing quest flags with console commands or save editors. Troubleshooting documentation warns that changing quest flags can break the game, and an apparently successful flag change can leave later objectives or dependencies inconsistent.
Choose the least destructive repair

Use the narrowest approach that produces a reproducible result. Jumping directly to a clean game install or a new playthrough destroys useful evidence and may not solve a dependency conflict.
Final pre-launch checklist
- A separate backup of saves exists.
- The game version matches the NPC mod and every required framework.
- ArchiveXL and TweakXL start without CET console errors.
- The package’s
.archive,.xl, and.yamlfiles are present in the directories specified by its instructions. - No renamed, duplicated, or leftover files from an older package remain.
- REDmod and legacy archive content have been identified and are not being confused in load-order troubleshooting.
- The logs from a fresh reproduction run have been checked.
- The test save predates the first affected interaction, or you have accepted that a new game may be required.
- Only after the repaired NPC works are optional patches and unrelated mods re-enabled.
This workflow turns an apparently mysterious NPC failure into a sequence of reversible tests: isolate the package, prove the dependency and file set, use logs to identify the failing layer, repair the base game only when necessary, and roll back quest state instead of editing flags blindly.
