The reliable way to repair a broken Control mod setup is to return to a vanilla launch, then add mods back in controlled groups. This separates a bad loader, path, dependency, or addon from an overwrite conflict. Control mods do not all use the same mechanism: some place loose files in /data/, some load a .addon64 beside the game executable, and others depend on a separate plugin loader. Treating them as one universal load order is the source of many false fixes.
Use this recovery sequence first
Do not begin by changing several load-order entries at once. A clean baseline gives you a known result, and incremental testing produces a small, reproducible failure instead of an unexplained crash after many simultaneous changes.
- Disable every mod. Use your manager’s profile or deployment controls where possible. If you installed files manually, move only the mod files out of the game directories; do not delete saves or configuration data.
- Launch Control and reach the point that previously failed. Test the menu, a saved game, or the mission where the crash or missing effect occurred. If the same failure remains with all mods disabled, the mod stack is not the immediate cause.
- Record the baseline. Note the game edition, platform, installed game version, launch parameters, and exactly when the failure occurs. These details determine which loader and files are compatible.
- Read each mod’s installation page before enabling it. Confirm the required loader, supported edition and version, dependencies, destination path, and whether deployment must be activated. Control JPC Overhaul, for example, documents a loose-file procedure that loads files from the game’s
datadirectory. - Re-enable mods incrementally. Add one mod at a time when a crash is severe, or use small documented batches when the list is large. Launch and test the same checkpoint after each addition. Keep the first failing combination; it is the smallest useful reproduction.
- Inspect conflicts before changing order. In the manager’s conflict view, identify which packages provide the same path or asset. Select the winner according to the mod authors’ instructions, then remove redundant or incompatible alternatives.
If the first failing combination contains only one mod, investigate that mod’s loader, version, dependency, and path. If it contains several, add those items back individually until the exact pair or group is identified.

Control uses more than one mod installation model. The correct diagnosis depends on which model a mod uses, not on the folder name alone.

Control Unfiltered is an example of the addon route: its shaders are replaced in process at load time, and its documentation instructs users to copy control-unfiltered.addon64 beside the executable. Because this method does not replace the base files, removing that addon is a clean test. A plugin-loader mod is different again; its launch parameters, DLL conflicts, and platform setup can determine whether the game starts at all.
Fix a crash at launch or shortly after enabling a mod
Check the loader and game version
A loader built for a different Control edition or game version can fail before the game reaches the menu. Check whether the mod page names a specific PC edition, storefront build, patch, or loader release. Do not assume that a file working on one platform or edition will work on another. Confirm the loader is installed in the path and format the author specifies, then test with only that loader and its required dependency enabled.
Check dependencies and launch parameters
Some mods are content packages; others rely on a loader or shared component. A missing dependency can look like a bad mod because the game may crash as soon as the dependent file is parsed. Compare the installed files with the dependency list, and copy launch parameters exactly as documented. Remove experimental parameters while testing so that one change has one observable result.
Test addon and DLL files separately
A malformed DLL or addon is a different failure class from a loose-file overwrite. Disable every addon and loader component, launch the game, and then add back one component at a time. If the crash returns when a single .addon64 or DLL is restored, keep that file disabled and check its supported version and installation location before trying other mods.
Remove the newest group first
When the game began crashing after several installations, remove the newest group rather than editing a large load order. If the crash disappears, restore those mods individually. This isolates a conflict faster because it preserves the last known working set.

Distinguish a mod crash from a persistent game failure
After disabling all mods, if Control still fails at the same point, verify the game installation through the platform’s repair or file-verification function and investigate non-mod causes. Reinstalling the entire mod stack before establishing a clean launch can hide the original problem and create new deployment errors.
When a mod is installed but nothing changes
An installed archive is not proof that its files are loaded. Work through these checks in order, changing one condition at a time.

Open the mod’s installation instructions and compare the deployed tree with the required path. A loose-file mod intended for /data/ will not work if its files remain in a nested extraction folder, a download directory, or an unrelated game-edition directory. For an addon mod, verify that the named .addon64 file is beside the executable, not inside /data/.
Confirm deployment and enabled state
Managers can show a package as installed while its files are not deployed. Check that the profile is active, the package is enabled, and deployment completed without an error. If the manager reports initialization or installation failure, resolve that manager problem before diagnosing the game’s graphics or scripts.
Confirm the required loader and dependency
Install and enable the loader named by the mod author, then test the loader by itself where the documentation permits. A content package without its loader can leave the game unchanged while appearing perfectly installed. Keep the game edition and version beside the mod version in your notes; a version mismatch is a common reason for a silent no-effect result.

Look for an overwrite
If only one effect is missing while the rest of the mod works, inspect conflicts for that specific asset. Another package may supply the same path and win the overwrite, hiding the first mod without causing a crash. The remedy is to choose the intended file, remove the redundant replacement, or follow the authors’ compatibility instructions—not to reinstall every mod.
Resolve load-order and file-overwrite conflicts
A conflict means that two packages compete for the same path or asset. The game can launch normally while the losing package contributes nothing, so a clean launch does not prove that the order is correct.
Use the manager’s conflict view
- Open the profile containing the affected mods and select the conflict or deployment view.
- Filter to the asset or directory associated with the missing effect.
- Record every package that supplies that path and which package currently wins.
- Read the relevant mod pages for a stated compatibility or priority rule.
- Set the intended winner, or remove one of two redundant alternatives, then redeploy.
- Launch and test the same scene or effect used in the baseline test.
Automatic sorting can help with generic plugin rules, but it cannot infer every Control convention. Loose files, addons, and a Control-specific loader may be governed by different mechanisms. The author’s installation and compatibility notes take precedence over a generic alphabetical or automatic sort.
Choose a winner deliberately
Choose the file that supplies the feature you actually want. If a visual overhaul replaces a shader that another mod also replaces, only one replacement can occupy the disputed path. Keep the winner, disable the losing replacement, and document the choice in the profile so a future update does not silently reverse it.
Recognize conflicts that are not ordinary overwrites
Two files can conflict even when they do not share a loose-file path. Injected DLLs, addons, and launch components can hook the same process and cause a startup crash. For those cases, use a minimal test: vanilla game, then loader alone, then one addon or plugin at a time. A load-order change cannot repair an incompatible injected component.

Run a reproducible incremental test
A short written test log prevents circular troubleshooting and gives useful evidence if you need help.

- Start with the verified vanilla set and record a successful checkpoint.
- Enable the loader required by the next test, if any, and launch.
- Add one mod or one small, named batch.
- Repeat the same action in game so results are comparable.
- When a failure appears, stop adding items and split that batch until the smallest failing set is known.
The smallest failing set is more valuable than a long list of enabled mods. It tells you whether the problem is intrinsic to one package or caused by an interaction, and it gives a support request a result that another person can reproduce.

Loose-file location
For mods that document loose loading, the relevant game location is the /data/ directory. Preserve the original directory structure when copying files. Do not move a whole archive into the folder unless the instructions explicitly say to do so; extract the contents so the expected subdirectories are present.
Addon location
For the addon route, place the named file beside the Control executable. Control Unfiltered’s documented filename is control-unfiltered.addon64. Keeping this file outside the executable directory is an immediate rollback test and avoids changing the game’s base assets.

Control’s Remedy save and configuration location is documented as AppDataLocalRemedyControl on Windows. Treat this as user data, not as a mod deployment directory. Back up saves before making broad changes, and do not delete this folder merely to remove a mod unless a separate troubleshooting instruction specifically requires it.

Prefer reversible profiles
Manager profiles and disabled packages are easier to undo than manual edits to base archives. Keep a known-good profile, a testing profile, and a note of any manually copied addon or loader file. This arrangement lets you return to the baseline without guessing which files were changed.
Account for edition, platform, and update differences
Before comparing two reports or copying a fix, align the game edition, platform, game version, mod version, loader version, and launch parameters. A path that is correct for one installation can be wrong for another. Record whether the game is running through the platform and executable named by the mod’s instructions; plugin-loader setup can depend on that detail.
Do not treat a mod manager’s generic load-order advice as a replacement for Control-specific documentation. The manager can show deployment and overwrite state, while the mod page determines whether a loader, addon placement, or launch argument is required.
What to include when asking for help
Provide evidence that lets someone reproduce the failure without guessing:
- Control edition, platform, and game version.
- Mod, loader, addon, and dependency versions.
- The installation path used for each item, including whether it is under
/data/or beside the executable. - Launch parameters and the manager profile or deployment state.
- The last known working mod set.
- The smallest set that reproduces the crash or missing effect.
- When the failure occurs: before the menu, during loading, after entering a save, or only when a particular effect appears.
- Whether the game launches and behaves normally with every mod disabled.
A report that says only that Control crashes with mods installed cannot distinguish a loader problem from an overwrite, version mismatch, or unrelated installation failure. The baseline and smallest failing set supply that distinction.
Prevent the next failure
- Keep one known-good profile and test new mods in a separate profile.
- Install one loader or addon family at a time.
- Read the required path and dependency list before extracting files.
- After each addition, test the same saved location or visual effect.
- Review conflict output after updates; a new package can replace an asset that previously won.
- Save the exact versions and launch parameters alongside the profile.
- Remove obsolete or redundant alternatives instead of allowing several packages to compete for the same asset.
These habits turn a vague mod failure into a bounded diagnosis: first establish a vanilla launch, then identify the loading mechanism, isolate the first failing addition, and finally choose conflict winners intentionally.
