Start by identifying where the failure occurs, then work from the least destructive fix to the most invasive. Restart the PC, update Windows and hardware drivers, check the game’s requirements, disable non-essential background software, and verify the installation. If only the game shows a black screen, test display modes, graphics drivers, shader caches, overlays, security software, and mods. If saves are involved, copy the local save folder before changing Steam Cloud settings, deleting files, or reinstalling.
First determine what is actually failing
“The game crashed” can describe several different faults. A game process that closes is investigated differently from a display that goes black while audio continues, a Windows blue screen, or a computer that restarts. Establishing the failure boundary prevents you from changing game files when the problem is actually a driver, overheating, or Windows.

Write down when the failure occurs: during launch, while loading a world, after entering a particular area, or after a predictable amount of play. Also note whether a new game works. That distinction becomes valuable evidence later.
Apply the low-risk platform checks first
These actions are reversible and address the common causes listed in Steam’s general launch guidance. Perform them in order, testing the game after each meaningful change so you know which action helped.

- Restart the computer. A full restart clears a stuck game process, temporary driver state, and pending update conditions. Do not rely only on closing and reopening the game.
- Install pending Windows updates. Restart again if Windows requests it. A partially installed update can leave a graphics or system component in an inconsistent state.
- Update the graphics and other device drivers. Use the hardware maker’s current driver for your GPU and the PC or motherboard maker’s firmware and chipset packages when appropriate. Record the driver version before and after updating.
- Check the game’s minimum requirements. Compare the game’s required Windows version, processor, memory, graphics hardware, and storage with your PC. A game can launch below a recommended specification and still fail when a demanding area loads.
- Close non-essential software one item at a time. Temporarily exit overlays, recording or streaming tools, RGB and hardware-monitoring utilities, chat overlays, and other programs that inject themselves into games. If security software is interfering, use its documented game exception process only as a controlled test, then restore protection if it is not the cause.
- Remove temporary launch customizations. Return custom launch options, compatibility settings, and forced resolution arguments to their defaults unless the game’s support page specifically requires them.
Change one category at a time. If several utilities are disabled simultaneously, you may fix the symptom without learning which program caused it, making the problem harder to diagnose when you turn software back on.
Verify the installation in Steam
Missing or damaged game content can cause crashes, missing textures, and failed loading. Steam’s file check compares the installed content with the expected version and replaces files that are absent or incorrect.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the survival game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish, then launch the game without mods or custom launch options.
A verification result that reports a few files could not be validated does not always mean the installation is still broken. Some games create local configuration files that are expected to differ from the distributed copy. If the game continues to crash, restart Steam and the PC, then test again before escalating to a reinstall.
Verification does not repair a corrupted save, fix overheating, or update a graphics driver. It is an installation check, not a universal repair. If the game is installed on a failing drive, repeated verification may also be a symptom of storage trouble rather than the solution.

Fix a black screen without risking your saves
First decide whether Windows is still responsive. If you can hear the game, move the mouse, or use keyboard shortcuts, the process may be running with an unusable display mode. If the entire computer is frozen or has restarted, return to the whole-PC checks instead.
Try a reversible display-mode change
- Use the game’s documented shortcut for switching between fullscreen and windowed mode, if it has one.
- If you reach the settings menu, select windowed or borderless mode and apply a lower resolution temporarily.
- Lower demanding options such as shadows and effects, save the settings, and restart the game.
These changes do not prove that the hardware is inadequate; they simply test whether the initial fullscreen mode, resolution, or rendering load is triggering the black screen. Once stable, restore settings gradually.
Check the graphics driver and shader cache
Install a current, stable graphics driver and restart Windows. A driver update can leave an old shader cache that no longer matches the game. Capcom identifies damaged shader-cache files as a possible source of graphical problems and advises affected players to collect diagnostic information. Use the game or graphics-driver documentation for the supported cache-cleanup method; do not delete arbitrary system folders. The first launch after a cache rebuild can take longer while shaders are compiled again.

Disable overlays from the launcher, chat, recording, performance-monitoring, and graphics utilities for one test session. Also test with non-essential security scanning integrations disabled only through the security product’s documented controls. Re-enable protection immediately after the test if it is not responsible. A black screen that disappears when an overlay is disabled identifies an interaction, not necessarily a defective game.

Remove mods and test a clean profile
Move mod files out of the game’s folder rather than deleting them, and use the game’s unmodified launch path. Mods can alter shaders, scripts, and save formats; a game update can make an older mod fail before the main menu appears. If a clean installation works, add mods back individually and keep a backup of any save that depended on them.
Validate the installation
Run Steam’s Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files procedure. Square Enix also directs players experiencing startup crashes or black screens to validate the installation. If verification repeatedly finds the same files, investigate storage health and security software rather than running the check indefinitely.
When the whole PC crashes, troubleshoot Windows and hardware
A blue or gray screen, sudden restart, or power loss points beyond the game. Steam notes that blue- and gray-screen restarts indicate a problem with the computer rather than Steam, the game, or the application. The game may be exposing an existing instability under load.

- Check temperature and airflow. Confirm that fans are operating, vents are clear, and the PC is not overheating. A crash that occurs only after prolonged high load is especially relevant.
- Return overclocks and undervolts to stable defaults. Test the game without experimental CPU, GPU, memory, or firmware tuning.
- Update firmware and drivers. Apply manufacturer-supported BIOS or firmware and chipset updates carefully, following the PC or motherboard instructions.
- Record the stop code or event. Photograph a blue-screen message or note the exact wording in Windows reliability or event reporting. “It crashed” is not enough to distinguish a driver fault from a power interruption.
- Check Windows system health. If other applications also fail, repair Windows system files using Microsoft’s current documented procedures and restart before testing the game again.
Do not keep relaunching a system that is repeatedly powering off. Continued thermal or electrical stress can turn an intermittent fault into data loss. A qualified technician can test memory, storage, power delivery, and cooling when software checks do not explain the behavior.

Protect saves before changing anything
Save recovery is different from game repair. Before deleting, renaming, reinstalling, disabling Cloud, or replacing files, make an independent copy of the local save folder.
- Exit the game and wait for Steam to finish any synchronization indicator.
- Locate the game’s local save directory. Common Windows locations include
Documents,AppDataLocal,AppDataLocalLow,AppDataRoaming, andSaved Games, but the exact path is title-dependent. - Copy the entire relevant folder, including subfolders and metadata, to an external USB SSD or flash drive.
- Keep the original folder untouched. Make a second copy with the date in its folder name before each recovery attempt.
- Only then rename or move a working copy for testing.
Do not assume that uninstalling a game removes or preserves saves in a predictable way. Save locations and cleanup behavior vary by title, and some saves are stored outside the installation directory.
Understand Steam Cloud conflicts and recovery
Steam Cloud is a remote file-storage and synchronization system for files that the game has configured. After a session it can upload changes, and before launching on another computer it can download the configured files. That convenience can also propagate the wrong copy if a damaged or old save is synchronized.

Preserve the local folder and any Cloud-conflict copies first. Disabling Cloud globally or for one game changes synchronization behavior; it does not itself repair a save. If a conflict dialog appears, do not choose an overwrite direction until you know which copy contains the newest valid progress.

Choose the correct copy
Compare timestamps, file sizes, and the in-game progress represented by each copy. A newer timestamp is useful evidence but is not proof of an intact save: a crash can create a recent, unusable file. Keep both versions while testing. If the local copy opens successfully, use it as the recovery source and avoid allowing an older Cloud copy to overwrite it.
Test a save safely
- With your backup secured, temporarily move the active save folder to a separate holding folder.
- Place one candidate save copy in the expected location.
- Launch the game with Cloud synchronization paused or disabled for that game, following Steam’s current per-game setting, so the test cannot immediately overwrite the candidate.
- Check whether the save appears and loads. Do not save over the original backup during the first test.
- If the candidate works, exit, preserve it as a new dated backup, and then decide whether to re-enable Cloud.
If neither local nor Cloud copy loads, the save may be damaged, tied to a missing mod, or incompatible with the current game build. A new save that works while the old one fails strongly points to save-specific data or a mod dependency rather than a graphics problem.

Mods, overlays, capture tools, RGB utilities, and aggressive security integrations can all interact with rendering or file access. The reliable method is isolation, not deleting everything at once.
- Back up saves and note the installed mod list and versions.
- Launch the unmodified game with overlays and recording tools disabled.
- Test the main menu, a new save, and the previously failing activity separately.
- Restore one mod or utility at a time, repeating the same test.
- When the failure returns, keep the triggering component disabled and check its maintainer’s compatibility notes for the current game build.
A save created with a mod may fail to load when that mod is absent. Do not overwrite it with a new game while investigating; keep the original backup and, if possible, restore the exact mod versions used to create it.
Build an evidence package when basic fixes fail
Contact the game developer or a qualified technician after the low-risk checks, installation verification, and save protection steps have been completed. Provide reproducible details rather than a general crash report.
- Exact error text, stop code, or launcher message
- Game name, build or patch version, and launcher
- Windows version, GPU model, graphics-driver version, processor, and installed memory
- Whether the problem affects only this game or other applications
- Whether the failure occurs with a new save and with all mods removed
- The precise sequence that reproduces it, including location, activity, and approximate time
- Installed mods and overlays, with their versions
- DxDiag output and any crash-report folder the game creates
- The time of each crash and what changed immediately beforehand
Capcom specifically requests DxDiag and crash-report data for certain graphical issues. Attach the files through the developer’s official support channel and remove personal information if the support instructions require it. Steam’s general guidance is to contact the game’s developer or a local technician when standard launch checks do not resolve the issue.
Choose the next remedy by risk and scope

Prevent the next failure
- Keep Windows, graphics drivers, and supported firmware current, but note the versions whenever you update.
- Maintain a dated manual backup of the save folder on an external drive, especially before a major game patch or mod change.
- Keep a simple list of mods, launch options, and overlays so you can reproduce a clean configuration.
- Do not treat Cloud synchronization as a backup. It mirrors configured files and can replicate a bad state.
- After a repair, test a new save before risking the only copy of an important world.
- Record the exact error and time when a problem first appears; this makes later logs and support responses far more useful.
The safest path is always to establish whether the failure is game-only or system-wide, make an independent save backup, then progress from reversible checks to targeted repair. Verification and clean-launch testing solve many installation and compatibility problems; blue screens, power loss, repeated file corruption, and saves that fail in every configuration require system or developer-level investigation.
