A new PC game that crashes, shows a black screen, remains stuck on “Preparing to Launch,” or closes without an error usually fails at a specific stage: the launcher, the game’s startup sequence, display initialization, or the Windows system itself. Identify that stage first, then apply the matching fix. Start by checking requirements and updates, repair the launcher and installed files, remove software conflicts, and treat any whole-PC freeze or restart as a Windows or hardware problem rather than a game-only problem.
Classify the failure before changing anything
The same symptom can have very different causes. A game that returns to the desktop is not handled the same way as a blank Windows display, and a computer that reboots is not merely experiencing a failed game launch. Use the symptom and failure stage to choose your first action.

Also note whether other games launch normally. A single-title failure points toward that game’s files, launcher handoff, or title-specific support. Failures across multiple games point toward Windows, drivers, hardware, or software that monitors the whole system. This distinction prevents you from repeatedly reinstalling one game when the computer is the real source of the problem.

Compare the computer with the game’s published requirements
Open the game’s official store or publisher listing and compare your computer with the published minimum and recommended requirements. Check the operating-system version, processor, memory, graphics hardware and storage requirement exactly as listed for that title. Steam warns that a computer at or near minimum requirements may still experience launch or performance problems; meeting a minimum specification is not a guarantee that every configuration will start reliably.

Do not treat “it installed successfully” as proof that the computer can run the game. Installation only confirms that files could be written to storage. Startup still depends on the operating system, graphics initialization and the launcher being able to hand control to the game.
Install pending updates before testing again
Check for updates to Windows, the game and the launcher. Epic Games Support specifically recommends checking for launcher updates when the Epic Games Launcher is crashing, failing to download or refusing to launch titles. Steam and other launchers can also have client updates that affect the handoff between the library and the game.
Restart the computer after applying updates, then test the affected title once. A restart matters because an update may not replace files or services until the previous session has ended.

Check whether the launcher service is operating
If the launcher opens but cannot start or download a title, check its published service-status page before changing local files. An outage can mimic a broken installation, and local repairs will not restore a service that is unavailable. Epic’s support guidance includes checking service status as an early troubleshooting step.
Repair Steam launch and installation data
Use these steps when Steam stays on “Preparing to Launch,” a title repeatedly returns to the library, or a download may have been incomplete. They target stale download-cache data and damaged or missing installed files.

- Clear the download cache. In the Steam desktop client, open Steam and choose Settings, then Downloads, and select Clear Download Cache. Steam may require you to sign in again. Clearing this cache removes temporary download data; it does not intentionally remove your installed games.
- Verify the game files. Open Library, right-click the affected game and choose Properties. Open Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files. Let the process finish before launching the game. If Steam reports that files must be reacquired, allow the download to complete.
- Restart Steam and Windows. Exit Steam fully rather than leaving only the window closed, restart Windows, and test the title again. This separates a repaired installation from a stale client session.
Verification is most useful when one Steam game fails while other titles work. If every Steam title fails, move to the software-conflict and system-fault checks instead of verifying each game indefinitely.
Repair an Epic Games Launcher failure
Epic Games Support describes a set of common fixes for a launcher that crashes, will not download, will not launch titles or otherwise behaves unexpectedly. First check the Epic service-status page, then install any available launcher update. After the client is current, restart Windows and try the affected title again.

If the launcher itself closes before you can reach its controls, determine whether other Windows applications are also failing. A launcher-only failure suggests a client installation or cache problem; failures in unrelated applications suggest a broader Windows issue. Keep the distinction clear when contacting support so you do not report a system crash as a game crash.
Remove software that can interfere with launching
Background programs can interfere with the transition from launcher to game. Steam specifically warns about software that modifies or monitors system, disk or network activity. Examples include utilities that monitor hardware, alter disk behavior, filter network traffic or inject features into running applications. The problem may affect only one title because games do not all initialize the same way.
Perform a controlled launch test
- Save work and close unnecessary applications.
- Open Windows startup and background-app controls and identify programs that start automatically or continue running after their window is closed.
- Temporarily exit nonessential monitoring, tuning, recording, overlay, security or network-filtering utilities. Do not disable protection you need to keep the computer safe; instead, follow that product’s documented pause or exclusion procedure when appropriate.
- Restart Windows so the test begins with a clean session.
- Launch only the game’s required launcher and the game itself.
If the game starts after this test, re-enable closed programs one at a time and test between changes. The first program that restores the failure is a strong conflict candidate. Keep that program closed while playing, update it, or consult its support documentation for a compatibility setting.

Use scope to identify a conflict
- One title fails: a title-specific conflict, damaged files or startup requirement is more likely.
- Every title in one launcher fails: examine that launcher’s cache, update state and background integrations.
- Games and unrelated applications fail: stop treating the issue as game-only and investigate Windows, storage, memory or overheating.
Fix a black screen without making a system crash worse
When Windows remains responsive
First determine whether the black screen belongs to the game or to Windows. If you can move the pointer, switch applications, hear system sounds or otherwise use Windows, the operating system is still running. Try cycling display output with Win+P. Windows can be sending the game to a different display mode or monitor even though the game process is active.

Then apply the launcher and file-repair steps for your platform. A black screen that affects only one game is usually a startup or display-initialization failure; a blank desktop that persists outside the game belongs to Windows troubleshooting.
When Windows itself is blank or unusable
Microsoft distinguishes a blank screen—often called a black screen because of its appearance—with no stop-error code or with only a cursor from an ordinary game window problem. Follow Microsoft’s blank-screen troubleshooting guidance rather than repeatedly force-closing the game.
If normal Windows startup cannot restore the display, use Advanced Startup to reach Startup Settings and then Safe Mode. Safe Mode loads a reduced Windows environment so you can determine whether the blank screen occurs without normal startup software. Use it to separate a Windows display-session problem from a game-specific launch problem, then restart normally and retest.
Do not confuse a black screen with a restart
A dark display followed by a reboot, blue screen or complete loss of responsiveness is not merely a display-mode issue. Treat that sequence as a whole-PC fault and follow the system-fault section below.

Treat freezes, blue screens and restarts as computer problems
Steam states that blue- or gray-screen restarts indicate a problem with the computer, not Steam, the game or the application. The same reasoning applies to a complete freeze that requires a power-button reset. A game may trigger the failure by stressing the system, but the corrective work is at the Windows, storage, memory or thermal level.
Check for overheating
Monitor temperatures and cooling behavior while reproducing the failure. A system that becomes unstable only after sustained load should be checked for blocked airflow, failed fans or other cooling problems. Stop the test if temperatures become unsafe or the computer repeatedly shuts down; repeated hard resets can damage open files and make later diagnosis harder.
Check storage
Use Windows disk-checking tools to look for file-system or drive problems. Storage errors can corrupt game files and can also cause Windows to hang. If a disk check reports errors, back up important data before continuing with game troubleshooting.
Test memory
Run Windows Memory Diagnostic when crashes are inconsistent, occur in several games or are accompanied by system restarts. Memory faults can produce different symptoms on different launches, so an apparently random game crash does not prove that the game is defective.
Repair Windows system files
Use Windows system-file repair tools when the operating system itself is unstable or when multiple applications fail. Complete the repair, restart Windows and test a simple application before returning to the game. If Windows remains unstable, continue with Windows support rather than repeatedly reinstalling the title.

Diagnose “the game closes with no error”
A silent return to the desktop leaves no message to interpret, so use controlled comparisons instead of guessing.
- Confirm the published requirements and note whether the computer is near the minimum specification.
- Install pending Windows, launcher and game updates.
- Use the launcher’s file-repair procedure: Steam’s cache clearing and file verification, or Epic’s service-status and launcher-update checks.
- Close programs that modify or monitor system, disk or network activity and test from a clean restart.
- Try another title. If another game works, record that the failure is isolated to one title; if several fail, investigate Windows, storage, memory and overheating.
Record exactly when the process ends: immediately after clicking Play, during a loading screen, or after entering active play. The failure stage is useful to the game’s support team and prevents a generic “it crashes” report from losing important detail.
Resolve a launcher that will not open
When the launcher itself fails, the game’s executable may never have been reached. Check the launcher’s service status and update state first. Then close unnecessary background software, restart Windows and try opening only the launcher.
If one launcher fails while other Windows applications and launchers work, describe it as a launcher failure. If multiple launchers and unrelated programs fail, use Windows blank-screen and system-fault troubleshooting instead. This scope test tells you whether to repair one client or investigate the operating system.
Use a symptom-first decision path

What to send game support when local fixes fail
Steam directs players to the game’s support team for persistent title launch failures. Contact the publisher or developer after completing the platform and Windows checks, and provide a precise report:
- Game title and launcher used.
- Whether the failure affects one title or every title.
- The exact stage: launcher, “Preparing to Launch,” loading screen, black window or active play.
- Whether Windows remains responsive, freezes, shows a stop screen or restarts.
- Which requirements, updates, file repairs and conflict tests you completed.
- Whether another game launches on the same computer.
This information lets support distinguish a damaged download from a launcher outage, a display-session problem or a computer fault. If the computer is restarting or freezing, continue with Windows and hardware diagnosis even while you contact game support; a title-specific reply cannot repair an unstable system.
When to stop repeating the same fix
Do not repeatedly clear caches, reinstall the same title or force power-offs when the evidence points elsewhere. One failed game with a responsive Windows session calls for title and launcher repair. Several failed games, application-wide instability or a restart calls for system diagnosis. A black screen outside the game calls for Windows display troubleshooting. Matching the remedy to the failure scope is faster and reduces the risk of turning a recoverable file problem into a storage or Windows problem.
