There is no universal fix for a new medieval crafting game that crashes, shows a black screen, or closes immediately after you press Play. The cause may be the launcher, damaged files, an outdated operating-system or graphics driver, antivirus quarantine, hardware below the game’s requirements, an overlay, or another background program.
Use the sequence below in order. It starts with reversible checks and separates a game-window problem from a monitor signal failure. Because the game title and platform were not specified, use the exact support page for your game for any title-specific launch option, patch, log location, or known-bug notice.
Identify the failure before changing settings
Write down the exact game title, edition, operating system, launcher, and graphics hardware. “New medieval crafting game” is not specific enough to apply a developer’s command-line option or a patch note safely. A fix for one Unity or Unreal game can be irrelevant, or harmful, in another.

Classify what you see:
- Crash before a window appears: the process starts and exits, sometimes with an error dialog.
- “Preparing to launch,” then nothing: the launcher hands off to the game, but the executable fails or is blocked.
- Black game window: the monitor still works and you can usually move the pointer, switch applications, or hear game audio.
- Monitor says “No signal” or goes completely dark: treat this as a display connection or hardware problem first, not as a normal in-game black screen.
- Crash after a loading screen or save selection: note the exact point and whether every save or only one save is affected.
Record the time, exact error text, whether the launcher reports the game as running, and what changed immediately before the failure. This information prevents repeating the same experiment and is essential if you contact support.

Run the safest launch sequence first
Steam Support notes that games may fail for many reasons because users have unique hardware and software combinations. Complete these checks in order, testing the game once after each major change.
- Restart the computer and launcher. Exit Steam or the named launcher completely, restart the computer, open only the launcher, and try the game once. Disconnect unnecessary USB controllers, hubs, capture devices, and other input hardware for this test.
- Temporarily remove interference. Close overlays, recording tools, performance tuners, RGB utilities, proxy or traffic-filtering tools, and programs that monitor or modify disk, network, or system activity. Do not uninstall them yet; simply close or pause them so you can identify a conflict.
- Update the operating system and drivers. Install pending operating-system updates. Then install a current graphics driver and any relevant chipset, audio, or other hardware driver from the hardware manufacturer. Reboot after installation, even if the installer does not insist.
- Verify the game files. A failed download or corruption in extracted files can prevent launch. Use the launcher’s file-integrity command before deleting folders or reinstalling.
- Compare your PC with the exact store-page requirements. Check the required operating-system version, processor, memory, graphics card and API, and free storage. A computer close to the minimum can technically qualify yet still have launch or performance problems.
Make one change at a time where possible. If the game starts, restore closed programs individually until you find the conflict rather than re-enabling everything at once.
Verify files in Steam or another launcher
Steam desktop client
- Open Library and right-click the game.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files (the label may differ slightly in an updated client).
- Choose Verify integrity of game files and wait for the process to finish.
- Restart Steam and test the game before changing graphics settings.
The equivalent command in another launcher may be called Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair. Use that launcher’s current support instructions rather than copying a Steam path. Verification can replace damaged files; it does not prove that your driver, antivirus, or hardware meets the game’s requirements.

If verification repeatedly reports damage
Close the launcher, confirm that the drive has free space, and run verification again after a restart. If the same files fail every time, check the launcher’s download location, disk health, and security software before attempting a clean reinstall. Back up saves only from a location documented by the game’s support page; do not delete unknown folders on the assumption that they are disposable settings.

Handle a missing-executable error safely
Steam Support says a missing-executable message is most commonly caused by antivirus software mistakenly reporting game files as malicious and quarantining them. A damaged download can produce the same symptom.
- Open your antivirus or endpoint-security quarantine and look for the game executable or a recently removed file.
- Confirm that the file belongs to the game you installed from a source you trust. Do not restore an unknown executable merely to make the error disappear.
- If it is a trusted false positive, restore it and add the game folder to the security product’s exclusion or allow list according to that product’s instructions.
- Run the launcher’s file-integrity verification again so missing or altered files are downloaded.
- Try one launch with non-essential overlays and monitoring tools closed.
Exclusions reduce protection for the selected folder. Keep the exclusion as narrow as possible, remove it if the game’s official support team does not require it, and never disable all antivirus protection as a first step.
Check requirements instead of guessing
Open the game’s current store page and compare every listed minimum and recommended item with your computer. Requirements normally cover the operating system, CPU, RAM, GPU and graphics API, and storage. A machine at the minimum line may launch but can still fail when a driver, resolution, or background workload differs from the developer’s test configuration.

| Memory | Installed RAM, not just free memory while the game is closed | Medieval Blacksmith lists 8 GB minimum memory on its 2025 Steam page. |
| Graphics and API | GPU model, driver, video memory, and required DirectX or other API | Medieval Blacksmith lists DirectX 11 as its minimum graphics API. |
| Storage | Free space on the installation drive and the file system’s available capacity | Medieval Blacksmith lists 5 GB minimum storage. |

Those figures describe that example game only. They are not a safe substitute for the requirements of an unnamed title. If your graphics card lacks the required API, changing resolution or reinstalling the launcher cannot add that capability.

Fix a black game window
First determine whether only the game is black. Press the operating system’s task switcher and see whether another application appears, move the mouse, or listen for menu sounds. If the desktop remains usable, continue with software checks.
Use documented display modes
Check the game’s official support page for a windowed, borderless, safe-mode, or reset-graphics option. Use only a launch option documented for that exact title and launcher; do not paste a command from a different game. If the game opens in a window, lower the resolution or refresh rate temporarily, then apply changes one at a time.
Remove overlays before advanced graphics changes
Close the launcher overlay, chat overlay, screen recorder, frame-rate counter, GPU tuning utility, and similar tools. An overlay can fail while the underlying game continues running, making the window look frozen or black. Test a clean launch before changing registry values, configuration files, or driver profiles.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRecheck the driver and requirements
Install the current graphics driver, reboot, and verify files. Confirm that the GPU supports the game’s required graphics API. If the game was updated immediately before the black screen began, read the developer’s current announcement for a known issue instead of repeatedly reinstalling.

When the whole monitor loses signal
A monitor that reports “No signal,” switches inputs, or remains dark even when you press the operating system’s task-switching shortcut is a different problem from a black game window. The cited Steam guidance supports software and requirements checks, but a total signal loss requires display-hardware diagnosis as well.
- Power the monitor off and on, then confirm that it is set to the input connected to the computer.
- Reseat the display cable at both ends. If possible, test a known-good cable.
- Try another input on the monitor or another output on the graphics card, following the hardware manufacturer’s instructions.
- Test a second monitor or television at a safe resolution. If the second display works, the original cable, input, or monitor is suspect.
- If the signal fails across displays and ordinary desktop use also becomes unstable, stop repeated game launches and seek hardware or local IT diagnosis.
Do not label a cable swap as a verified game fix. It identifies a possible signal path fault; it does not establish why the game triggered it.
Stop “Preparing to launch” from closing immediately
This symptom usually means the launcher starts a handoff and the game process exits before presenting a usable window. Work through the common causes rather than clicking Play repeatedly.
- Restart the computer and launcher.
- Verify the installed files.
- Check antivirus quarantine for a removed executable.
- Close overlays, recorders, performance boosters, proxy tools, and disk or network monitors.
- Install operating-system and graphics-driver updates.
- Compare the machine with the game’s exact requirements.
Watch the launcher’s status while testing. If it says the game is running but no window appears, use the game’s documented windowed or safe-graphics method. If the status changes back to Play without an error, capture the launcher message and the system event or crash report available on your operating system; do not invent a log path when the developer has not documented one.

Background programs and USB devices to test
Steam identifies external devices and programs that modify or monitor disk, network, or system activity as possible sources of interference. For a controlled test, leave the computer with only the launcher and essential operating-system services running.
- Disable in-game overlays and chat overlays.
- Exit screen recording, streaming, and capture software.
- Pause frame-rate limiters, hardware monitors, overclocking tools, and RGB control panels.
- Disconnect unnecessary controllers, steering wheels, flight sticks, USB audio interfaces, and hubs.
- Pause proxy, traffic-filtering, or network-monitoring software, then restore it after testing.
Do not permanently remove a security or accessibility tool solely because one launch failed. Re-enable each item separately after a successful test so you can identify the actual conflict.
Use official patches and title-specific notices
Patch status matters more for a newly released game than a generic tweak. Search the developer’s official announcements for your exact title, platform, and version. A patch can change requirements, repair a crash, or introduce a new compatibility problem; the date and version number must match your installation.
Example: Going Medieval hotfix 0.16.16
If the game is Going Medieval, its official announcement identifies hotfix 0.16.16 and records a crash fix. That announcement also suggests capping the game at 60 frames per second, then 30 frames per second, for a persistent animation issue. Apply that advice only when your installed title and version match the announcement. The developers also state that players who still experience the problem should request a refund if possible and have patience; this is a title-specific statement, not a general remedy for every medieval crafting game.
Prepare a useful support request
When the sequence does not solve the problem, contact the game developer or launcher support instead of repeating destructive steps. Steam Support recommends developer support or a local IT specialist for configuration-specific cases.
Include:
- The exact game title, edition, platform, launcher, and installed version.
- An uncropped screenshot showing the complete error dialog or black-screen behavior. Remove personal information, account identifiers, and unrelated open windows.
- The exact error text, including punctuation or an error code.
- The approximate crash time and the last successful launch.
- Operating-system edition and build, CPU, GPU, installed RAM, display resolution, and driver version.
- Whether file verification completed successfully and whether antivirus quarantine contained a game file.
- A list of overlays, recorders, performance tools, proxy tools, and USB devices that you disabled for testing.
- Whether the monitor lost signal or only the game window became black.
State what happened after each step. “Verification completed, antivirus restored the executable, and the monitor still works in other applications” is far more actionable than “the game is broken.” Do not attach a full system report publicly if it contains license keys, personal paths, or account data; send it through the developer’s official support channel.
Quick Recap
What not to do
- Do not download replacement executables or cracked files from an untrusted site.
- Do not disable antivirus permanently to bypass a missing-file message.
- Do not apply a launch option, registry edit, or configuration-file change written for another game.
- Do not assume a black screen means the same thing as a monitor losing signal.
- Do not delete saves or configuration folders before checking the exact game’s backup and reset instructions.
- Do not claim a game is unsupported solely because it crashes once; document the repeatable conditions and compare them with the developer’s current requirements.
Decision checklist
- Can the desktop and another application still display? If no, diagnose the cable, input, monitor, or graphics hardware.
- Does the launcher stay open while the game exits? Restart, close interference, update, verify files, and check antivirus.
- Is a file missing? Restore it only if it is a trusted game file, add a narrow exclusion if appropriate, and verify again.
- Does the PC meet the exact requirements, including the graphics API and free storage? If not, upgrades or a supported system are required.
- Does the problem remain after a clean launch? Send support the uncropped screenshot, system report, exact error, timing, hardware details, and tested software list.
