Use a reversible troubleshooting order: restart Steam and the computer, install operating-system and hardware-driver updates, verify the game files, disable overlays and other non-essential software, disconnect extra input devices, and confirm the listed system requirements. Treat a black screen according to when it appears, test only one controller at a time, and send crashes that occur after the game loads to its developer or publisher with the error text and logs. Reinstall only after these checks.
First identify where the failure occurs
The timing of the failure determines which part of the system is most likely responsible and what evidence you should collect. A crash before the menus points toward Steam state, files, drivers, display initialization, or a system conflict. A crash after loading is more likely to require the game developer’s investigation. Controller faults are likewise game-specific once the game has loaded.

There is no reliable crash percentage, black-screen rate, or controller-failure rate for an unspecified simulator. The game name, version, operating system, hardware, and engine are also unknown, so a title-specific bug list or universal launch command cannot be stated safely.
Run the low-risk checks in order
Work from the steps that change the least and reveal the most. Keep a note of what changes after each step; that turns a vague failure into evidence instead of sending you in circles.

1. Restart Steam and the computer
- Exit the game.
- Close Steam completely rather than leaving only the window minimized. Reopen it and try the game once.
- If the symptom remains, restart the computer and launch Steam again before opening other applications.
A restart clears stuck client state and resource locks. Steam Support describes it this way: “Restarting the computer flushes all kinds of system states and caches, while also resetting other programs and releasing locks on files and other resources.” This is why a restart is a useful diagnostic, not just a ritual. If the game works once and fails again after another application starts, record which application was opened; that pattern points to a conflict.
2. Update the operating system and hardware drivers
Install the current updates offered for the operating system, then update the relevant hardware drivers, especially the graphics driver. Restart when the installer requests it and test the game before adding other changes. A black screen during rendering can result from an outdated or damaged driver even when Steam itself opens normally.
Do not treat an update as proof that the game is compatible. It only removes one known source of failure. If the update introduces the symptom, record the driver version and the date so the developer can distinguish a driver regression from a game-file problem.

3. Verify the game files before reinstalling
Steam includes a repair check that compares the installed data with the files expected for the game. In the Steam client:
- Open Library.
- Right-click the survival simulator and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for the process to finish.
- Launch the game once the check completes.
The check may download missing or damaged data, so allow it to finish and make sure the computer has enough free storage for the replacement files. Verification is preferable to an immediate reinstall because it is narrower, preserves the rest of the installation, and tells you whether Steam found a local discrepancy. It cannot repair a bug in the game’s code, an incompatible driver, or a failure caused by another program.

4. Remove software and device conflicts
Temporarily disable non-essential software while testing. This includes overlays and background utilities that inject themselves into games, monitor graphics, remap input, or display on-screen notifications. Do not permanently remove a security tool on the basis of one test; close or pause only what is safe to pause, then restore it after the diagnostic.
Also disconnect non-essential external input devices. A racing wheel, joystick, handbrake, second gamepad, or USB adapter can make a game switch between input sources or select an unexpected device during startup. Leave one controller connected, launch the game, and test. If the game works with one device but fails when another is attached, reconnect devices one at a time to identify the conflict.
Run this isolation test even if the controller appears unrelated to a crash. Input drivers and overlays can load during startup, so removing them changes the launch environment as well as the controls.
5. Check the listed system requirements and display state
Compare the computer with the game’s published system requirements rather than assuming that a free title will run on any machine. Check the operating-system version and the listed processor, graphics, memory, and storage requirements exactly as the game presents them. If the computer falls below a requirement, a crash or black screen may be a compatibility limitation rather than a corrupted installation.
If the game offers a windowed or safe display option, use that option as a diagnostic. A successful windowed launch indicates that the failure may be tied to the previous fullscreen mode, resolution, refresh rate, or display selection. This title is not identified by engine, so do not apply an engine-specific launch flag as though it were universal. Use only a display option exposed by the game or documented for that specific title.

Use the correct black-screen branch
Black screen before any menu
Treat a screen that goes black before the menus as a launch or rendering problem. Complete the restart, operating-system and driver updates, file verification, overlay and background-software isolation, and requirements check in that order. Disconnect extra input devices during the test so a device or its driver cannot complicate startup.

After each change, note whether the screen remains black, whether the game closes by itself, and whether audio is present. Those distinctions are useful to the developer and prevent you from describing several different failures as one.
Black screen with audio or a responsive overlay
Audio indicates that at least part of the game may still be running. If the Steam Overlay is available, try opening it. You can also try the connected controller’s home, Steam, or Xbox button where that function is supported. If an overlay or system menu appears, close it and relaunch the game rather than continuing to play in an uncertain display state.
If the overlay never responds and the game cannot be closed normally, end the process using the operating system’s standard application controls, restart Steam, and test again after the conflict-isolation steps. Do not infer from audio alone that the graphics driver is definitely at fault; it only narrows the stage of the failure.
Black screen after changing graphics settings
Undo the last display change if you can reach the settings. If the game provides a safe or windowed startup choice, use it to regain a visible menu and select a conservative display configuration. There is no universal command or setting that can be prescribed without knowing the game’s engine and version. If the title repeatedly saves an unusable configuration, include the exact setting you changed and the point at which the screen went black in your developer report.

Make a controller test that isolates one variable
Controller failures are easier to diagnose when only one input device and one connection method are present.
- Close the game.
- Disconnect other controllers, joysticks, wheels, handbrakes, and unnecessary adapters.
- Connect one controller using its current USB or Bluetooth method.
- Restart Steam if the client still shows the previous device state.
- Launch the game and test movement, menus, and one in-game action.
Steam specifically recommends disconnecting all controllers when input keeps switching between a controller and other inputs. If the single-device test works, reconnect the other devices one at a time; the first reconnected device that brings back the problem is useful evidence.
Record the controller model and whether it is connected by USB or Bluetooth. If the game has loaded and the controller still fails after this isolation test, the issue belongs with the game developer or publisher rather than general Steam platform support. The developer can determine whether the title recognizes that device, maps its controls correctly, or contains an input bug.
Choose the next action by reversibility and evidence
The following comparison keeps the troubleshooting order explicit. “More reversible” means the step is easy to undo and unlikely to alter the installation; “evidence gained” describes what a successful or failed test tells you.

When a reinstall is justified
Reinstalling is a last resort, not the first response to a crash. Perform it only after restarting, updating, verifying files, isolating background software and devices, and checking requirements. A reinstall replaces the whole local installation and can consume a substantial download, while leaving a driver, overlay, unsupported hardware configuration, or game-code bug untouched.

If you do reinstall, record the symptom immediately before removing the game and test the fresh installation before restoring optional overlays or extra controllers. A clean installation that fails in the same way is strong evidence that the cause lies outside the original files and should be included in the support report.
Capture evidence before contacting support
Vague reports such as “it crashes” force the developer to guess. Record the following while the details are available:
- The exact error text, including punctuation or an error code.
- When the failure occurs: on launch, before the menu, while loading a save, or after entering the game.
- Whether a black screen has audio, responds to an overlay, or follows a display-setting change.
- The operating-system version.
- The processor and graphics hardware.
- The controller model and connection type.
- Which checks you completed and what changed after each one.
- Relevant Steam or game logs, attached in the format the support form requests.
Valve advises including error messages and a log of what the Steam client does when you try to launch a game. Copy the text rather than paraphrasing it, and state the exact time of the failure if the log uses timestamps. Do not claim that a step fixed the problem unless you can reproduce a successful launch after that step.
Send the report to the right support owner
Steam Support handles platform authentication and CD-key issues. Steam’s guidance says that errors or unexpected behavior unrelated to Steam authentication or CD keys, once the game has loaded, should go to the game’s developer or publisher. That includes in-game crashes, gameplay questions, bugs, and controller problems.
For a game that never reaches its menus, complete the platform checks first and preserve the launch logs. If the failure remains, use the game’s official developer or publisher support channel when available and include the same evidence. For a controller that fails only inside the loaded game, skip repeated Steam account troubleshooting; report the device model, connection type, and single-controller test directly to the developer.
A useful report has a short title such as “Black screen before menu after driver update,” followed by the game version if shown, operating system, CPU and GPU, controller details, exact error text, reproduction steps, and attached logs. State whether file verification found anything and whether the symptom changes with overlays and extra devices disconnected. This lets support reproduce the correct branch instead of asking you to repeat unrelated fixes.
