Start with a clean, single RTX Remix runtime. Remove every old d3d9.dll, d3d9_remix.dll, NvRemixLauncher32.exe, and the .trex folder from the Fallout: New Vegas installation, then extract one known-good release without mixing files. Confirm that the required DLSS files are directly inside Fallout New Vegas.trex, launch through the package’s intended xNVSE chain, and use the Remix popup, Debug View, Geometry Hash check, or a USD capture to verify that game geometry—not merely the Remix runtime—is reaching the renderer.
If the game still fails, separate an injection problem from a graphics-driver or game-renderer problem. Bethesda’s baseline steps are to update the graphics driver, verify the game files, run with administrator rights, and add antivirus exclusions. A “Failed to initialize renderer” message is a graphics-card initialization failure, while a Remix popup followed by a black screen or crash points to content interception, conflicting injectors, or an incompatible setup. There is no published prevalence study for these Fallout: New Vegas symptoms, so treat each failure as a configuration diagnosis rather than evidence that one universal fix exists.
What the crash or black screen usually means
RTX Remix can load into a game successfully while the game’s rendering calls remain unsuitable for Remix processing. NVIDIA describes Remix as “primarily targeting DirectX 8 and 9 games with a fixed function pipeline.” Fallout: New Vegas may therefore show the Remix interface and still fail when scene content is drawn. The popup demonstrates that the runtime injected; it does not prove that every draw call, shader path, or piece of geometry is compatible.

- No Remix popup: the runtime probably did not load. Check the DLL location, the executable being launched, and the launcher chain.
- Popup, then immediate crash: injection worked, but a content path, add-on, duplicate injector, or incompatible runtime may fail during initialization or the first scene.
- Popup and a black screen: Remix loaded, but rendering output is not reaching the display correctly. Use Debug View, Geometry Hash, or a USD capture before changing many files.
- “Failed to initialize renderer” before Remix appears: begin with GPU selection, driver checks, and the game’s compatibility-mode launch path rather than Remix files.
The same symptom can have different causes depending on when it appears. Record whether the failure occurs before the main menu, when loading a save, when starting a capture, or after using Alt-Tab.
First recovery: return to one clean runtime
Mixed releases are a common source of startup failures. A newer launcher combined with an older DLL, or a leftover helper combined with a fresh .trex package, can produce missing-file errors, an apparently loaded runtime with no visual change, or a crash during capture. Perform this cleanup before testing individual add-ons.
1. Close every Fallout and Remix process
Exit the game, launcher, and any mod manager that may still hold files open. If Windows reports that a DLL is in use, end the related game or launcher process before continuing. Do not overwrite a live installation while it is running.

2. Remove the old injection files
Open the Fallout: New Vegas game directory—the folder containing FalloutNV.exe—and remove the old copies of:
d3d9.dlld3d9_remix.dllNvRemixLauncher32.exe- the entire
.trexfolder
These names are the documented cleanup set for the FNV RTX Remix setup. If you have several copies in subfolders, do not assume the game will ignore them; keep only the files belonging to the release you are about to test. Preserve personal saves and unrelated mod files, but temporarily move additional renderer DLLs or helpers out of the game directory so they cannot inject during the clean test.
3. Extract one release as a complete set
Choose the single Remix runtime package intended for your installation and extract all of its files together. Do not combine files from different releases, copy only “newer-looking” DLLs, or restore an old .trex directory after extraction. A clean test is meaningful only when the launcher, DLLs, add-ons, and configuration came from the same package.

4. Test before restoring optional add-ons
Launch the clean package with no optional mesh patch, alternate renderer, ENB-style injector, or extra graphics hook. If this baseline starts, add components back one at a time and relaunch after each change. The first component that reintroduces the failure is the strongest lead; restoring everything at once removes that information.

In the documented FNV-DLSS5 arrangement, three files must be directly inside the game’s .trex directory:

“Directly inside” means the path should end with the filename, not another directory. For example, Fallout New Vegas.trexnvngx_dlss.dll is the expected shape; Fallout New Vegas.trexsome-packagenvngx_dlss.dll is nested and should be corrected. Check the spelling and extensions in File Explorer, including whether a file was accidentally saved as .dll.dll after hidden extensions were enabled.
Use the intended xNVSE launcher chain
The FNV issue setup records a specific chain: xNVSE in the game root, NewVegasRTXHelper in Data, an FNV INI package, an optional mesh patch, and launch through nvse_loader. Keep that chain consistent with the package you installed. Launching FalloutNV.exe directly when the package expects nvse_loader can bypass the helper or initialization steps; launching a different executable can also prevent Remix from loading where you expect it.
Check each part
- Game root: confirm the xNVSE files are beside the game executable, not inside
Dataor a newly created nested folder. - Data: confirm the
NewVegasRTXHelperfiles are in the game’sDatadirectory and are not duplicated under another mod’s subfolder. - INI package: use the INI files supplied for this FNV setup. Do not merge settings from a different runtime release until the baseline launch works.
- Optional mesh patch: leave it disabled for the first test. Re-enable it only after the unpatched chain reaches the menu and a test scene.
- Executable: start with
nvse_loader, as the documented package specifies, and make sure any shortcut or mod-manager profile points to that same executable.
If the popup disappears after changing the launcher, compare the executable path and working directory with the clean test. A shortcut can silently point to a second Fallout installation, making an apparently correct file layout irrelevant.
Prove whether Remix is doing useful work
The Remix popup is only the first checkpoint
Look for the RTX Remix popup during startup. Its absence means to investigate the DLL location, the selected launch executable, and the xNVSE chain before changing rendering settings. Its presence proves runtime injection, but not successful interception of Fallout’s scene geometry.

Use Debug View and Geometry Hash
When the popup appears but the image is unchanged, black, or unstable, open the developer menu and inspect Debug View and the Geometry Hash check. These views help answer whether geometry is reaching Remix and whether repeated objects are being recognized. If the views show no useful geometry, focus on compatibility and the game’s rendering path rather than reinstalling DLSS files repeatedly. If geometry appears but the normal view is black, investigate conflicting renderers, display output, and add-ons.
Capture a USD scene when the failure is intermittent
A USD capture can show whether scene data is being handed to Remix at the moment a crash or black screen occurs. Capture the smallest reproducible case: start from a clean launch, reach the location that fails, and capture before changing mods. A capture that contains no expected scene geometry points toward interception or compatibility; a capture with geometry but a broken live display points toward runtime rendering or a conflicting hook.
Apply Bethesda’s baseline PC checks
Once the file and launcher layout is clean, apply the standard Fallout: New Vegas graphics checks. These are independent of Remix and can eliminate a driver or installation problem that would otherwise be misdiagnosed as an RTX issue.

- Verify game files: use the game platform’s file-verification function so missing or damaged original files are restored.
- Run with administrator rights: test the intended launcher with elevated privileges if Windows blocks DLL loading or writes to the game directory.
- Add an antivirus exclusion: exclude the game and Remix files only if your security software is quarantining or blocking them; review the security log rather than disabling protection indiscriminately.
Bethesda specifically warns that AMD RX users may be unable to launch with Adrenalin 24.4.1 and may need to return to a prior driver. Treat that as a driver-version branch for affected AMD RX systems, not as a universal requirement for every GPU.
Fix “Failed to initialize renderer” separately
Bethesda uses “Failed to initialize renderer” as a generic description of a graphics-card initialization failure. It does not, by itself, identify an RTX Remix file as the cause.
Check the selected GPU and driver
On systems with integrated and discrete graphics, confirm that Fallout: New Vegas and the launcher are using the intended GPU. Apply the change in the operating system’s graphics settings or the GPU driver’s per-application profile, then restart the game. Recheck after driver updates because Windows can reset the preferred adapter.

Try the documented compatibility-mode launch path
For FalloutNV.exe, open the executable’s Properties, use the Compatibility tab, enable the documented compatibility-mode option, apply it, and test the game before restoring optional injectors. If the renderer initializes only in that mode, record the exact setting and keep it consistent for the launcher executable used by xNVSE. If the error remains, return to driver, GPU-selection, and file-verification checks instead of adding more DLLs.
Black-screen troubleshooting by symptom
Black screen before the popup
This usually means the runtime did not reach its normal initialization point. Recheck that d3d9.dll and the other release files are in the directory used by the launched executable, not merely in another Fallout installation. Confirm that your shortcut starts the intended nvse_loader chain. Remove duplicate injectors and test the clean runtime again.
Black screen after the popup
Here, injection succeeded. First disable optional mesh and renderer add-ons, then use Debug View or Geometry Hash to determine whether geometry is present. Verify the three DLSS files are directly under .trex. If the scene is still black, test the baseline game without the optional add-ons and compare the result; restore only one component per test.
Black screen when loading a save or entering a location
Record the exact save and location. A failure tied to one scene suggests a content-interception or asset interaction rather than a simple startup path. Capture the scene in USD if possible, inspect Debug View, and test a new game or an uncomplicated interior. Do not overwrite the known-good baseline while investigating a single save.
Black screen after Alt-Tab
The Fallout: New Vegas RTX Remix issue record includes occasional Alt-Tab crashes and poor performance. Treat Alt-Tab as a separate, reproducible trigger: test once without switching windows, then test with one controlled Alt-Tab and record whether the failure occurs only after focus changes. This distinction prevents a stable startup problem from being conflated with a focus-transition crash.

Remove renderer conflicts and duplicate injectors
Every additional graphics hook increases the number of possible failure points. During recovery, treat any extra d3d9.dll, ENB-style injector, alternate renderer, or stale helper as suspect. Search the game root and mod-managed deployment folders for duplicate names, then move nonessential copies outside the installation for the baseline test. Do not delete unrelated saves or mod archives; isolate them so they cannot load, and keep a record of what was moved.

After the clean Remix build launches, restore one add-on at a time. Test the menu, a new or known-good save, and the location that previously failed after each restoration. If the crash returns immediately after a specific injector or mesh patch is restored, leave that component disabled and report the exact combination rather than continuing to stack changes.
Compare possible paths without guessing
If one clean build remains unstable, compare a different Remix runtime release or a non-Remix renderer as a diagnostic control. The relevant question is not which option looks best in an isolated screenshot; it is which path loads reliably and intercepts the content your installation actually uses.

NVIDIA’s compatibility guidance supports the expectation that technically compatible games can still crash or render unexpectedly because individual games use different rendering techniques. A non-Remix renderer may therefore behave differently, but the available evidence does not establish performance or compatibility results for any particular alternative.
Collect useful logs before asking for help
When the clean layout, driver checks, and controlled add-on tests do not resolve the failure, stop changing files and document the configuration. Include:
- RTX Remix/runtime build number or release name
- Fallout: New Vegas edition and installation location
- GPU model and driver version
- The executable used to launch:
nvse_loader, a shortcut, or another launcher - The complete mod and renderer list, including anything temporarily disabled
- Whether the Remix popup appeared
- The exact failure point: startup, menu, save load, scene entry, capture, or Alt-Tab

Keep logs from a single failed run together and label them with the runtime build. If you change the driver or restore an add-on, begin a new run and collect a new set; mixing logs from different configurations makes the sequence difficult to interpret.
