There is no single OBS setting that fixes every crackling lofi stream. First compare a local recording with the live stream, then check sample rates, OBS audio-buffering clues, duplicate capture, mixer levels, and system load—in that order. These checks help distinguish a problem in your audio setup from one limited to the stream or monitoring path.

First find out where the crackling occurs

Keep the OBS scene and audio source unchanged while you make a short local recording and compare it with the live stream. OBS recommends testing settings before going live; this comparison is a diagnostic clue, not proof of a particular cause. See OBS’s streaming guidance.

  • Crackling in the recording and stream: Start with the source, device, routing, sample rate, levels, or system load.
  • Clean recording, crackling only in the stream: Investigate the stream path and what a viewer hears. The local test does not rule out every intermittent or delivery issue.
  • Crackling only in your monitoring: Check the monitoring route and device separately; the audience may not be hearing the same signal path.

Write down which result you get and change one setting at a time. That makes it easier to tell whether a change actually helped.

Check sample rates on every device in the audio path

Compare the sample rate selected in OBS with the formats used by the actual playback device, capture device, and any audio-routing software between them. A mismatch can contribute to drift or distortion. OBS Analyzer’s diagnostic guidance recommends consistent device formats and identifies 48 kHz as its recommended setting; this is a setting recommendation, not a guarantee that a mismatch caused your crackle. See OBS Log Analyzer.

  1. In OBS, open Settings → Audio and note the selected sample rate.
  2. Check the operating-system format for the playback and capture devices your scene actually uses. Also check any virtual cable, mixer, or routing application in the chain.
  3. Make the rates consistent, using 48 kHz if it is supported across the devices and applications in your setup.
  4. Change one setting at a time, then restart or reinitialize the affected application or device if needed. Make another recording and compare.

Read the OBS log for buffering and timing clues

Review the OBS log or submit it to the OBS Log Analyzer after a session that reproduced the fault. Look for sample-rate mismatch and maximum audio buffering messages. Treat them as clues, not a diagnosis: Analyzer guidance associates maximum buffering with high system load and possible source interruption, and also notes incorrect device timestamps as a possible contributor. It suggests restarting OBS to reset buffering. The Analyzer’s output is an example diagnostic result, not a controlled test of your setup.

  • If a buffering warning appears during the crackle, close unnecessary workloads and test again.
  • If a device or timestamp clue appears, record which device was active and whether the fault follows it.
  • Restart OBS as a controlled test when buffering is reported, then check whether the warning and symptom return.

OBS’s official streaming issues guide covers performance and connection-related checks; a performance warning does not by itself establish an audio fault.

Rule out duplicate audio capture

A device selected globally in OBS can also be added as an Audio Input Capture or Audio Output Capture source in a scene. Capturing the same device through both routes can produce echo or doubled audio. Check Settings → Audio and the active scene’s sources, then keep only the intended capture route. OBS documents this configuration and notes that the device-timestamps option is Windows-only: OBS audio capture sources.

Do not toggle device timestamps as a generic crackling fix. On Windows, test that option only as a controlled change when device or log symptoms make it relevant; compare a recording before and after.

SABRENT USB External Stereo Sound Card Adapter, Plug & Play (AU-MMSA)
  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.

Check for clipping in the OBS mixer

Watch the mixer while the crackling occurs. OBS says final stream or recording audio must remain below 0 dBFS to avoid clipping distortion. If peaks reach or exceed 0 dBFS, lower the source level or mixer gain and retest. Clipping can sound distorted, but it is only one possible cause of crackling. See OBS’s audio mixer guide.

Test system load before changing hardware

If maximum-buffering messages coincide with heavy CPU use or other demanding work, close unnecessary applications and repeat the same test. A system-load correlation is a reason to investigate; it does not prove that video rendering or encoding caused the audio artifact. OBS’s performance guidance explains how resource pressure can affect rendering and encoding: OBS encoding performance troubleshooting.

Only after the software and signal-path checks should you isolate hardware. Test whether the fault follows one interface, capture device, port, or routing driver across otherwise controlled setups, then investigate that device’s driver and connections. A historical OBS forum discussion proposed shared USB bandwidth for one capture-card configuration, but it is anecdotal and does not establish that a powered hub or new controller will fix other systems.

Do not treat dropped frames as an audio diagnosis

Network dropped frames and audio crackling are distinct symptoms. OBS describes dropped frames as a connection stability or bitrate issue. If viewers report crackling but your local recording is clean, investigate the stream path; do not assume that lowering bitrate will fix an audio artifact. Use OBS’s streaming issues guidance for connection problems.
