Most Halo-64 problems have a short path to a fix: use an 8 MB Expansion Pak (or enable it in ares), verify the controller-to-player assignment and control scheme, then tune 3D resolution and effects while watching the FPS counter. Halo-64 is an unofficial multiplayer port of Halo: Combat Evolved for Nintendo 64 hardware and emulators. It uses converted maps from the Xbox game, so you must supply your own Xbox game files.
What Halo-64 requires before troubleshooting
Halo-64 is built from decompiled Halo code with a new Nintendo 64 renderer, menu, HUD and sound layer. It supports split-screen multiplayer, bots, Firefight and Rumble Pak feedback, but it is not an official Nintendo or Microsoft release. The project documentation lists two requirements that explain many startup failures:

- An 8 MB Expansion Pak is required. The standard Nintendo 64 memory configuration is 4 MB and is not enough for this port.
- You need your own Xbox game files, including the map data used by the conversion process.
Windows Central has also described the project as playable and reported the Expansion Pak and original Xbox copy requirements. If you are using original hardware, install an Expansion Pak before testing anything else. If you are using an emulator, confirm that it is configured for 8 MB rather than assuming the setting is automatic.

Fast triage: identify the symptom before changing settings
Change one variable at a time. This order prevents a video setting from being mistaken for a controller fault or a memory problem from being mistaken for poor performance.

- Cartridge is inserted into Nintendo 64 console; doubles original 4MB of memory, for a total of 8MB
- Allows games to have larger worlds, longer animation sequences, and much more complex gameplay.
- Increases screen resolution from 320 X 240 pixels up to 640 X 480 pixels
- Required for games like Donkey Kong 64
- It will not boot or reports insufficient memory: verify the 8 MB Expansion Pak. In ares, set
Nintendo64/ExpansionPak=true, then relaunch the game. - Buttons or movement are wrong: check the player assignment and begin with the Standard control scheme. Only then test another scheme or individual options.
- The picture is black, corrupted or too coarse: adjust
3D RESOLUTIONone step at a time, checkWIDESCREEN, and useHUD INSETif a television clips the interface. - Split-screen or bot matches slow down: lower resolution first, then reduce animation rate, particles, view-model detail and terrain detail while the FPS counter remains visible.
- A rebuilt map fails to load: check the extracted-map path, rebuild, and reduce build parallelism or increase WSL memory if the build process is killed.
Why Halo-64 needs the Expansion Pak
The port’s renderer, converted maps, multiplayer views and effects need more than the Nintendo 64’s base 4 MB. The required configuration is 8 MB, supplied by the Expansion Pak. This is a launch prerequisite, not an optional quality upgrade.
Original Nintendo 64
Use a genuine 8 MB Expansion Pak in the console. A console that still has the 4 MB Jumper Pak will fail the memory requirement even if the cartridge or ROM image is correct. If the game suddenly works after installing the Expansion Pak, no controller or video adjustment is needed for that particular failure.
ares emulator
Open ares’ Nintendo 64 configuration and enable the Expansion Pak explicitly:

Do not leave the emulator at its 4 MB configuration. Close and relaunch Halo-64 after changing the option so the new memory layout is applied from startup.

4 MB versus 8 MB at a glance
| Configuration | Result for Halo-64 | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 4 MB base memory | Below the documented launch requirement; boot or loading failures are expected. | Install an Expansion Pak or enable the emulator’s Expansion Pak option. |
| 8 MB with Expansion Pak | Required memory configuration for the port and its documented features. | Use this before troubleshooting controls, video or frame rate. |
Why are my N64 buttons mapped wrong?
First make sure each physical controller is assigned to the intended player slot in the emulator or hardware setup. A correct button map on Player 1 does not help if your controller is assigned to Player 2, or if two players share one assignment.
Standard control scheme
The documented Standard layout is:
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| Analog stick | Look and turn |
| C buttons | Move and strafe |
| Z | Fire by default |
| R | Grenade |
| A | Jump |
| B | Reload or action |
| L | Melee |
| D-pad up | Weapon switch |
| D-pad down | Crouch |
| D-pad left | Zoom |
| D-pad right | Grenade switch |
| START | Pause |
If the game responds but the layout feels unfamiliar, select one of the other documented schemes rather than remapping every button immediately.
Alternative schemes and per-action options
Halo-64 provides Bumper Jumper, GoldenEye and North schemes in addition to Standard. Each player can also choose:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Normal or inverted look.
- Held or toggled crouch.
- Z or R as the fire button.
- Separate look speeds for the analog stick and C buttons.
Begin with Standard, change only the option that feels wrong, and test in a quiet area before joining a four-player match. For example, if aiming works but firing is uncomfortable, change the fire-button choice instead of changing the whole scheme. If turning is too slow while C-button movement is fine, increase the stick look speed without altering movement controls.
Rank #3
- EASY TO USE: Insert into the original N64 console directly and ready to go
- MAXIMUM RAM: Double original 4MB of memory inside the console, for a total of 8MB right now
- BOOSTER: Increase screen resolution from 320 X 240 pixels up to 640 X 480 pixels and enhance graphics in N64 games
- NOTE: Required for the games like Donkey Kong 64, Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask and other N64 classics
When a physical controller still misses a button
Isolate the hardware and assignment in this order:
- Try the controller in another N64 port or emulator assignment.
- Try a second controller in the same port.
- Test the suspect controller outside Halo-64 to determine whether the button fails system-wide.
- Check that the emulator sees the correct N64 controller model and that available system software updates are installed.
- Restart and remove possible wireless interference if you are using a wireless controller.
Nintendo’s controller guidance is written for its own N64 controller software, not Halo-64, but its hardware-isolation steps are useful here. If one button remains faulty after these checks, the controller may need service rather than a game-setting change.
How to fix a black screen, missing textures or a coarse picture
Use the in-game display options before treating the symptom as a renderer defect. The main control is 3D RESOLUTION; it changes the amount of image data the Nintendo 64 must draw and therefore affects both clarity and performance.
Choose a 3D resolution
| Setting | Documented behavior | When to try it |
|---|---|---|
| Chunky | 160 pixels wide with doubled pixels. | Use when memory or frame time is tight and a very coarse image is acceptable. |
| Medium | Renders at 256 pixels wide. | A lower-cost step above Chunky. |
| Standard | Renders at 320 pixels wide. | Use as a balanced baseline for troubleshooting. |
| High detail | Targets 480i when the map leaves enough memory; otherwise the README describes 640×240 at 240p. | Use only after confirming that the map and memory configuration can sustain it. |
Move one step up or down, reload the affected map and check whether the corruption changes. If lowering the setting makes the picture stable, the issue is likely resource pressure rather than controller input. If every resolution shows the same black or missing output, continue with the diagnostic flags below.
Widescreen and overscan
WIDESCREEN is anamorphic 16:9 output intended for a display that stretches the image. It does not create extra rendered detail. If the game looks horizontally wrong, turn this option off or make sure the television is using the corresponding stretch mode.
HUD INSET moves interface elements inward. Enable it when a television’s overscan cuts off health, ammunition or menu edges. This changes the HUD position, not the world view.
Shimmering terrain and texture instability
If terrain or textures shimmer while the game remains visible, reduce TERRAIN DETAIL. The project documentation explains that high terrain detail fades with distance to reduce shimmer; reducing it can also lower rendering work. Test the same camera position after each change so you can distinguish a distance-detail problem from a general resolution problem.
Renderer diagnostics for reproducible faults
The project exposes developer diagnostics including debug_no_level, debug_no_objects, debug_no_hud and debug_rdpq. These flags can show whether the level, object, HUD or RDPQ rendering phase is responsible for a failure.
Recommended Free Tools
- Use them temporarily to identify the phase that disappears or corrupts.
- Record the map, resolution, memory mode and exact reproduction steps.
- Report the reproducible case to the project instead of leaving a debug flag enabled as a permanent player setting.
Why does Halo-64 lag with four players or bots?
Halo-64 keeps its game simulation at 30 ticks per second, but the rendered frame rate varies with map complexity, the number of split-screen views and the number of bots. Four local views make the renderer do substantially more work than one view; bots add simulation and drawing work. A lower frame rate does not necessarily mean the 30-tick simulation has stopped.
Best Value
- Store levels, characters, top scores and more with 256KB Memory Card
- 123 pages of memory
- Load, save, copy and delete game saves with ease
- Fully compatible with Nintendo 64 games with a save option
Use the FPS counter as your measurement
Keep FPS COUNTER visible while tuning. The counter reports frames and timings, allowing you to see whether a change removes a frame-time spike instead of judging only by how the image feels. The README also documents debug_stats, profile and profiling scripts for deeper investigation.
Player-facing settings that reduce load
| Setting | What it reduces | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 3D RESOLUTION | Pixels rendered for each view. | A softer or blockier image. |
| ANIMATIONS: half rate | Update frequency for characters, vehicles and weapons. | Motion appears less fluid. |
| PARTICLES: off | Transient effects such as sparks, smoke and similar particles. | Effects are less visually rich. |
| VIEW MODEL detail | Rendering work for the first-person weapon and hands. | The weapon view is less detailed. |
| TERRAIN DETAIL | Distance and complexity of terrain rendering. | Far terrain is simpler and may shimmer differently. |
A repeatable tuning procedure
- Choose one map and start with one player. Record the FPS counter with your normal resolution and effects.
- Add players one at a time, recording the counter after each addition.
- Return to the same player count and add bots separately, so split-screen cost is not confused with bot cost.
- Lower
3D RESOLUTIONone step and observe the timing. - If needed, set
ANIMATIONSto half rate, disablePARTICLES, reduceVIEW MODELdetail, then reduceTERRAIN DETAIL. - Change only one setting between measurements and keep the setting that removes the largest frame-time spike while leaving the image readable.
This is a practical comparison method derived from the documented controls and measurement tools, not an independent laboratory benchmark. Results will vary by map, player count, bot count, original hardware and emulator.
Configuration comparisons
| Workload or setting | Lower-load choice | Higher-load choice |
|---|---|---|
| Memory | 4 MB (below requirement) | 8 MB Expansion Pak (required) |
| Local views | One player | Two to four split-screen views |
| 3D resolution | Chunky, Medium or Standard | High detail |
| Animation | Half rate | Full rate |
| Particles | Disabled | Enabled |
| Terrain and view model | Lower detail | Higher detail |
Map conversion and rebuild failures
If a map works in one build but fails after rebuilding, first verify that the extracted Xbox maps are in the exact directory expected by the project:
build/xbox/disc/maps/
After correcting the path, rebuild the project. Map conversion and linking are memory-intensive. On machines with less than 16 GB of RAM, reduce Ninja’s parallelism so fewer conversion jobs run simultaneously. If a build running under WSL is killed, increase WSL’s memory allocation and retry with lower parallelism.
- Missing map input: the maps directory is empty or in the wrong location; place the extracted files under the path above.
- Build process killed: concurrent conversion jobs exhausted available memory; lower Ninja parallelism and raise WSL memory if applicable.
- Runtime map failure after a successful build: confirm that the rebuilt output corresponds to the map you tested and repeat the build after correcting the source files.
Rumble Pak and four-player setup
The port supports Rumble Pak feedback for shots, hits, explosions and vehicles. On original hardware, use a controller fitted with a Rumble Pak. In ares, select Rumble Pak as the controller pak for the relevant controller. If the game plays normally but there is no vibration, check the pak selection and the physical accessory before changing video or performance settings.
The documented local multiplayer capacity is up to four players. Every participant therefore needs a working controller, a distinct player assignment and, when desired, a correctly configured Rumble Pak. Test one controller at a time before starting a full split-screen session; this makes a missing port assignment easier to identify.
When to stop changing settings and report a bug
Report a reproducible issue when the Expansion Pak is confirmed, controller assignments are correct, the problem occurs across sensible resolution settings and the fault can be isolated with the renderer diagnostics. Include the map, player and bot counts, original hardware or emulator, memory setting, display options, control scheme and the exact steps that trigger the problem. A precise reproduction is more useful than a description such as “it lags” or “the screen is broken.”
