Most problems in this classic RPG port come from using the wrong controller API, losing window focus, checking the wrong save location, or launching an offline, outdated installation. Identify the exact port and version first, protect your saves, then troubleshoot input, saves, and crashes in that order. The Steam build can accept DirectInput and XInput controllers; the Windows 10/11 build accepts XInput only.
Because the game identity and edition are not specified here, do not apply a save path or controller mode from another port. Record your storefront, operating system, game version, controller model and API, and whether the last launch was offline before changing anything.
Identify the exact build before changing settings
Classic RPG ports can share a name while using different input handlers, save locations, and update rules. A fix for one edition may do nothing—or make diagnosis harder—on another. Write down these details from the title screen, Steam library, Windows Settings, and controller documentation:

- Symptom: controller absent everywhere, input lost after Alt-Tab, missing save slot, unreadable save slot, or a crash before launch.

Protect every save before troubleshooting
Controller experiments are usually harmless to save data, but reinstalling, changing profiles, or creating replacement saves can make recovery harder. Make a protected baseline first:

- Start the game and create a fresh manual save in a new slot.
- Keep at least one older manual slot untouched as a fallback.
- Wait until any automatic-save indicator has finished.
- Close the game normally instead of ending its process or powering off during a save.
- Only then test controller modes, reinstall, or change Steam input settings.
Do not delete, rename, or replace files based on a generic internet save-folder path. There is no single published directory that applies to every classic port in this guidance. Open the support material for the exact title and edition before inspecting or copying files. If you cannot identify the edition, preserve the current installation and all existing save data until you do.
Fix a controller that is not detected
Use the correct controller API
A controller can appear normally in Windows and still be invisible to the game if the build expects a different API. Start with the compatibility table rather than repeatedly reinstalling drivers.

If you need replacement hardware for the Windows 10/11 build, search for an XInput-compatible USB gamepad. Compatibility still depends on the game build, so confirm that the product exposes XInput rather than assuming that every USB controller does.
Run a controlled input test
- Leave the game closed and connect only the controller you intend to test.
- Test the keyboard in the game or launcher. If keyboard input also fails, the issue is broader than controller detection.
- Test the same controller in another game that uses the same API. This separates a game-specific problem from a controller or Windows problem.
- Disconnect extra physical gamepads and disable or close virtual controllers. Multiple devices can make it unclear which device the game is receiving.
- Choose either Steam’s layout, a third-party mapper, or the controller’s native mode for the test—not all three at once.
- Record the result before changing another setting. A working keyboard, a controller that works in another game, and a controller that fails only in this RPG point toward the RPG’s API or focus handling.
When input stops after Alt-Tab
If the pad works in menus but stops after Alt-Tab, a notification, a launcher window, or a display-mode change, treat the timing as evidence of focus routing rather than immediate hardware failure.

- Open Steam’s Controller Settings.
- Open Desktop Layout and configure it so the controller can operate as PC controls.
- Return to the RPG.
- Click the game window to restore focus.
- Test movement and menu input again.
Desktop Layout changes how Steam routes input while the game is not the active window; it does not repair, move, or restore a save. If input returns only after clicking the game window, keep focus behavior in your diagnosis and avoid changing save files.
When the Steam build still ignores the pad
Repeat the test with the controller’s other supported API. For example, a controller that fails in DirectInput may work in XInput, while another may expose only DirectInput. Make one change, launch, and test; changing API, Steam layout, a third-party mapper, and controller mode simultaneously removes the evidence needed to identify the cause.
When the Windows 10/11 build ignores the pad
The Windows 10/11 release is XInput-only. Use an XInput-compatible USB gamepad connected directly to the PC, then retest with other controllers and virtual devices disconnected. A controller that Windows recognizes is not sufficient proof of compatibility because recognition by Windows does not convert DirectInput into XInput.
Recover a save that disappeared after reinstalling
First determine whether the slot is missing or unreadable
A completely absent slot and a slot that appears but cannot be loaded require different handling.

- Missing slot: the load list contains no entry where your save should be. Check the online update, the cloud boundary, the exact port and edition, and the Windows user profile before examining files.
- Unreadable slot: the entry is visible but produces an error or refuses to load. Preserve it, record the exact message, and do not overwrite other slots or create a new save in its place.
Use the online-update recovery sequence
If you reinstalled while offline, close the replacement copy without creating a new save. Then:
- Reconnect the PC to the internet.
- Let Steam and the game install every pending update.
- Launch the game only after updating completes.
- Open the load screen and check the original slots.
“To load your save data, please connect online and update the game.”
This requirement means an offline reinstall can look like data loss even when the installation is simply not synchronized or current. Do not start a new game until you have checked the load screen after the update; a new save can complicate later identification of the original slot.

Do not guess the save directory
Classic ports do not share one universal save-folder path. The correct location can vary by title, edition, storefront, and user profile. Use the support article for the exact game and edition, and copy files only after confirming that the folder belongs to that installation. Keep the untouched fallback slot and any existing files before attempting a replacement.

Check the platform boundary
Confirm that the reinstall is the same game family and edition as the original save. A save from one port is not automatically readable by another port, even when the title and story are similar. The same caution applies when a user profile or storefront account changed during reinstall.
Move a mobile save between devices
The documented mobile cloud paths are limited to the same operating-system family. Complete synchronization on the original phone before replacing it, and verify the cloud copy before starting a new game on the replacement device.

If the replacement device shows an empty list, stop before starting a new game. Return to the original device, complete synchronization, and verify that the cloud copy is present. Same-family support does not establish cross-platform compatibility.

Once controller API, focus, and save checks are separated from installation problems, use this escalation order. It avoids collecting diagnostics before the simplest supported fixes have been tried.

- Confirm the game is current. Allow the storefront and game to finish all updates, especially after an offline period or reinstall.
- Update the graphics driver. Get the current driver from the GPU manufacturer’s official support channel rather than relying on an unrelated driver utility.
- Restart the PC. A restart clears processes and device states left behind by a failed launch, display-mode change, or controller remapper.
- Retry with unnecessary overlays closed. Close overlays and recording, monitoring, or chat layers that are not required for the game.
- Remove unnecessary remappers. Close third-party controller mappers and virtual-controller tools while testing the game’s native input path.
- Reinstall if the crash persists. Protect the manual and fallback saves first, then reinstall the exact edition. After an offline reinstall, reconnect and update before checking saves or judging the result.
- Escalate with diagnostics. If the game still crashes, submit an MSInfo report and a DxDiag report with the support request.
Include the exact port and version, whether the crash occurs before a menu or after a particular action, whether the last launch was offline, the controller model and API, and precise reproduction steps. “It crashes” is not enough to distinguish a driver failure from an input, focus, or save problem.
Use the symptom to choose the next branch

Common mistakes that make recovery harder
- Using the wrong edition’s instructions: save paths and controller requirements are not universal across classic ports.
- Changing several variables at once: if API mode, Steam layout, a mapper, and the controller itself change together, you cannot tell which change mattered.
- Testing only in Windows: Windows can detect a device that the game cannot use because the API is wrong.
- Ignoring focus timing: input that fails only after Alt-Tab points to routing and focus, not automatically to a damaged controller.
- Reinstalling before protecting saves: always create a fresh manual save, retain an older fallback, wait for automatic saves, and exit normally.
- Checking saves while offline: reconnect and update before concluding that a slot is gone.
- Overwriting an unreadable slot: preserve the original entry and document the error first.
- Assuming mobile cloud conversion: the documented paths are Android-to-Android and iPhone-to-iPhone only.
What to include in a support request
If the ordered fixes do not resolve the problem, provide a compact record that lets support reproduce the correct branch:
- Exact RPG title, port, storefront, edition, and game version.
- Windows version or mobile operating system.
- Controller model, connection type, and DirectInput or XInput mode.
- Whether keyboard input works and whether the controller works in another game using the same API.
- Whether the failure begins after Alt-Tab, a notification, a launcher window, or a display-mode change.
- Whether the reinstall or launch occurred offline, and whether updates completed afterward.
- Whether the save is missing from the list or visible but unreadable.
- For crashes: exact timing, reproduction steps, and attached MSInfo and DxDiag reports.
This information keeps an input failure, a focus-routing issue, a save-visibility problem, and a broader launch crash from being treated as the same defect.
