Start by updating Tomb Raider I–III Remastered to the newest build for your platform. Official patches have fixed controller lag, failed input, navigation and mapping errors, black or missing textures, pixelation, rendering flicker, brightness behavior and frame-rate issues. Then identify whether you have a wrong mapping, a controller-detection failure, an in-game rendering defect, or a complete display-signal loss. Each category has a different fix.
For PC controller failures, test one controller connected directly to the computer and keep a wired XInput-compatible USB controller available as the simplest fallback. For graphics defects, compare Classic and HD Graphics Mode before changing cables. Use a certified High Speed HDMI cable only when the display is losing signal or showing handshake symptoms; a cable cannot repair an in-game texture or rendering bug.
Identify the failure before changing settings
The same symptom can come from very different layers. A button doing the wrong action is a mapping problem. A controller that never appears in the game is a detection or connection problem. A black texture inside a level is a rendering problem. A television that reports no signal is a display-chain problem. Use this classification first so that you do not try hardware fixes on a software defect.

| What you see | Most likely layer | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Buttons perform the wrong actions, or the camera and movement feel reversed | Control scheme or remapping | Open Options, inspect the selected scheme, and remap the affected input. |
| The controller works elsewhere but the game does not respond | Detection, connection, or an input-layer conflict | Update the game, disconnect other controllers, connect directly, and test again. |
| Input becomes sluggish or menus do not highlight correctly | Game-side input or navigation bug | Install the latest patch before replacing hardware. |
| Textures are black, missing or pixelated while menus and the display remain visible | In-game rendering or asset handling | Update, test Classic and HD modes separately, then report a persistent defect to Aspyr Support. |
| The image flickers, goes black briefly, or the television says no signal | Rendering mode or physical display signal | Check mode and display settings; if the signal itself drops, bypass adapters and test a certified High Speed HDMI cable. |
Update first: the patches that changed troubleshooting
Do not begin with a cable purchase or a complete control reset. Patches released during 2026 changed both the controller and graphics behavior, so an old build can reproduce a bug that has already been fixed.

| Patch | Publication date | Relevant fixes recorded by Aspyr |
|---|---|---|
| Challenge Mode Patch 2 | May 1, 2026 | Black textures, missing textures and pixelation; on Android, controller lagging, navigation and menu-highlighting problems. |
| Challenge Mode Patch 3: Community Update | August 20, 2026 | Brightness slider, 60 FPS in Classic Graphics Mode, a visual rendering-flicker fix, inverse-controller setting fixes and a PS4 touchpad mapping correction on iOS. |
| Challenge Mode Patch 4 | October 6, 2026 | Additional visual-effect and rendering fixes, plus a fix for Android controller input failing after the title was minimized. Aspyr describes this release as including bug fixes across all platforms. |
As of October 19, 2026, Patch 4 is the newest specifically dated release in the available official notes. Your store or device may present updates differently, and a platform can require a restart before the new build is active. Check the title’s update screen, install everything offered, fully quit the game, and launch it again.
Fix controller mapping and wrong-button problems
A wrong action usually means that the game is receiving input but using a different layout from the one you expect. Aspyr’s Modern Controls Overview says the modern scheme is adapted from the Tomb Raider Legend, Anniversary and Underworld control schemes. The default mapping is not identical on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch, and the mobile versions have their own platform behavior.
Check the selected scheme
- Pause the game and open Options.
- Open the controls or controller section and note which control scheme is selected.
- Test the movement, camera, action, jump and menu-confirm buttons in a safe area.
- If one action is wrong, select that action and assign the button you want. Most inputs can be remapped in the Options menu.
- Save or apply the layout, return to the game, and test both gameplay and menu navigation. A layout that works in a level can still leave a menu button unassigned.
If every button is shifted by the same pattern, switch to the intended platform layout rather than remapping every action individually. Reconnect the controller after changing the scheme if the game does not immediately refresh its input state.
Use the platform’s default mapping as a diagnostic
Do not assume that a button label from one platform applies to another. The official controls reference provides separate mappings for PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and PC. Use the table below as a diagnostic guide, not as a universal button chart.

| Platform | What differs | Best correction path |
|---|---|---|
| PC | Input can come from XInput, another gamepad protocol, Bluetooth, or a remapping layer. | Test a single directly connected controller, then choose and remap the in-game scheme. |
| PlayStation | The console layout and touchpad behavior are distinct; a PS4 touchpad mapping issue was addressed on iOS in Patch 3. | Use the PlayStation mapping shown in Options and verify touchpad-related actions after updating. |
| Xbox | The Xbox default layout is separate from the PlayStation and Switch layouts. | Choose the Xbox scheme and reassign only the actions that remain incorrect. |
| Switch | The Switch control arrangement and button labels differ from other consoles. | Check the selected Switch layout in Options before judging a button as broken. |
| iOS | External-controller mappings depend on the connected device; Patch 3 fixed inverse-controller settings and a PS4 touchpad mapping error. | Update iOS and the game, then inspect inverse and touchpad settings before remapping. |
| Android | Patch 2 addressed lagging, navigation and menu-highlighting problems; Patch 4 addressed input failure after minimizing. | Update, relaunch after returning from the background, and retest with one controller. |
Fix a controller that is not detected
Detection failure is different from a bad mapping: no button should be treated as functional until the game sees the device. Follow these steps in order.
- Install the latest game update. Controller input failures have been fixed in multiple patches, including an Android failure after minimizing the game.
- Quit the game completely. Do not leave it suspended while changing controllers or adapters. Launch it again after the controller is connected.
- Use one controller only. Disconnect extra gamepads, steering devices and other input hardware while testing. This removes ambiguity about which device the game is reading.
- Connect directly. Plug the controller into the console or PC rather than an unpowered USB hub. On a wireless device, reconnect it through the platform’s normal Bluetooth or wireless pairing screen before launching the game.
- Check the platform sees the controller. If the operating system or console cannot see it in its own controller settings, the game cannot correct that connection. Resolve pairing, battery or port issues at the platform level first.
- Retest in the title’s Options menu. A device that appears in the platform interface but not in the game should be tested with the default control scheme before custom remapping is restored.
- On PC, test a wired XInput-compatible USB controller. This is the most direct physical fallback when a wireless, Bluetooth or non-XInput device is detected unreliably. Use it with no hub or adapter in the path.
Once the wired test works, reconnect the original controller and change only one variable at a time. If the original device fails while the wired XInput controller works, the problem is in the original device, its wireless connection or its input translation layer rather than in the game’s basic controller support.
Address lag, navigation and intermittent input
Delayed movement, sluggish menus and missing highlights can look like a defective controller. Patch 2 specifically lists controller lagging, navigation and menu-highlighting fixes on Android, while later patches added broader controller and rendering corrections. Update before attempting a hardware diagnosis.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePC isolation test
- Close the game and disconnect every controller except the device under test.
- Reconnect it directly to the PC. Avoid an unpowered hub during the test.
- Launch the game and leave the default mapping active.
- Test a wired XInput-compatible USB controller if the first device still lags or disappears.
- If the wired controller is responsive, restore the wireless or Bluetooth device and compare again. The comparison tells you whether to investigate the original connection or the game itself.
Do not remap dozens of buttons while input is still dropping. Remapping changes what a valid signal does; it cannot restore a signal that never reaches the game.

Android resume failure
If an Android controller stops working after you minimize the game, update to a build containing Patch 4, dated October 6, 2026. Then fully close and relaunch the title with the controller already connected. If input still fails, repeat the one-controller, direct-connection test and record whether the failure occurs only after backgrounding or also on a fresh launch.
Choose between Classic and HD Graphics Mode
Classic and HD are separate rendering paths, so testing both is one of the fastest ways to locate a graphics defect. A problem that appears only in one mode points toward that mode’s rendering path; a defect that follows you through both modes is more likely to involve a shared game setting, display configuration or hardware signal.
- Update the game and restart it.
- Open the graphics settings and select Classic Graphics Mode. Reproduce the problem in the same level or menu.
- Record whether the issue is a black texture, missing texture, pixelation, flicker, brightness problem, low frame rate or complete loss of signal.
- Switch to HD Graphics Mode and repeat the same test without changing other settings.
- Compare the two results. If only one mode fails, keep the working mode as a temporary workaround and report the failing mode with the platform and build number.
Patch 3 states that Classic Graphics Mode now runs at 60 FPS for a seamless experience on any console. That change makes Classic a useful frame-rate comparison, not merely a visual preference. It does not imply that every PC or mobile configuration will sustain a particular frame rate under every display setting.

Fix black, missing or pixelated textures
Black or absent textures are in-game rendering defects when the rest of the display remains stable. Patch 2 lists fixes for black textures, missing textures and pixelation. Patch 3 and Patch 4 add further rendering and visual-effect fixes. This history makes updating the first remedy.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Install the newest build available for your platform and restart the title.
- Reproduce the texture problem in Classic mode, then in HD mode.
- Check whether the defect affects one object, one level, one mode or the whole game. A repeatable mode-specific result is valuable when reporting the issue.
- Check brightness and display settings so that a very dark scene is not mistaken for a black texture. Patch 3 added a brightness slider.
- If textures remain black, missing or pixelated in both modes after updating, report the details to Aspyr Support. Include the platform, mode, level, visible symptom and whether restarting changes it.
Changing an HDMI cable is not a remedy for a texture that is wrong inside the game while menus and the display signal remain present. The cable carries the rendered image; it does not repair the game’s texture or rendering code.

Rendering flicker
Patch 3 records a visual rendering-flicker fix, and Patch 4 records additional visual-effect and rendering fixes. Update before changing the monitor or television. Then test both graphics modes, because a mode-specific flicker and a flicker that affects both modes point to different causes.
Brightness
Use the brightness slider added in Patch 3 to separate an intentional dark presentation from a rendering fault. Adjust it while viewing the same scene, then compare Classic and HD. If the slider changes the scene normally but isolated objects remain black, treat the remaining problem as a texture or rendering defect.
Frame rate
Use Classic mode as the known comparison described in Patch 3: the patch notes state 60 FPS in Classic Graphics Mode on any console. If Classic is smooth but HD is not, the difference is associated with the graphics mode or its workload. If both modes behave poorly, check the display’s resolution and refresh-rate configuration and document the platform and mode when contacting support.

Tell a software rendering defect from an HDMI signal problem
An HDMI cable matters only when the physical signal is unstable. Symptoms include the television or monitor reporting no signal, the entire image cutting out, repeated black-screen handshakes, or the display returning only after reconnecting the cable. A black wall texture, missing object texture or flickering effect inside a fully visible game image is not the same failure.
- Confirm whether the display loses the entire signal or only shows a bad element in the game.
- Check the game’s brightness, resolution, refresh rate and HDR settings, plus the monitor or television’s selected input.
- For a complete signal loss, connect the console or PC directly to the display. Bypass hubs, splitters, capture devices and adapters during the test.
- Try a certified High Speed HDMI cable and a different display input if the direct connection still drops signal.
- Return to the original setup only after the direct path is stable.
If the image is stable but the game still shows black textures, missing textures, pixelation or rendering flicker, stop changing HDMI hardware. Keep the mode comparison and patch information for an Aspyr Support report instead.
Platform-focused checklists
PC
- Update the game, then restart it after installation.
- Use one controller connected directly to the PC.
- Test a wired XInput-compatible USB controller if the current device is not detected reliably.
- Choose the intended PC control scheme and remap only the affected actions.
- Compare Classic and HD modes before changing display cables.
PlayStation
- Install the latest console build.
- Use the PlayStation mapping in Options rather than assuming an Xbox or Switch layout.
- Check whether the issue is limited to a touchpad action; the documented PS4 touchpad mapping correction applies to iOS, so record the exact platform when reporting a similar symptom elsewhere.
- For a full black screen or no-signal message, test the direct HDMI path.
Xbox
- Update before evaluating button behavior.
- Use the Xbox control scheme and remap the individual action that remains wrong.
- Disconnect extra controllers while testing detection.
- Separate a visible in-game rendering defect from a complete display-signal loss.
Switch
- Use the Switch-specific mapping in Options.
- Test one controller configuration at a time so handheld, detached and additional-controller states are not confused.
- Update and compare Classic and HD modes for visual problems.
iOS
- Update the game before testing an external controller.
- Check inverse-controller settings and touchpad mapping after Patch 3.
- Use the same one-controller and direct-connection isolation method where the device permits it.
Android
- Update through the device’s game store.
- Patch 2 addressed lagging, navigation and menu-highlighting problems; Patch 4 addressed controller input failure after minimizing.
- Launch with one controller connected, and retest after a full relaunch if the game has been backgrounded.
When to stop troubleshooting and report the bug
Contact Aspyr Support when the game is fully updated, the controller is visible to the platform, one directly connected controller still fails, or a graphics defect reproduces in a documented mode after the Classic-versus-HD test. Include:
- Platform and controller model or connection type.
- Whether the issue is wrong mapping, no detection, lag, navigation failure or input loss after minimizing.
- Game version or patch level.
- Graphics mode, brightness setting and whether the problem occurs in both modes.
- Whether the entire display loses signal or only an in-game object, texture or effect is wrong.
- The exact steps that reproduce the failure and whether a wired XInput-compatible USB controller changes the PC result.
This information lets support distinguish a control-layout issue from an input failure and a rendering defect from an HDMI handshake problem.
