Fix CONTROL Resonant in the least disruptive order: restart Windows, install pending game and system updates, confirm that the PC meets the final requirements and that the game is installed on an SSD, then update graphics drivers and runtimes, verify the installation, isolate overlays and unstable tuning, and only then consider reinstalling or contacting support. This sequence follows Remedy’s guidance that each step should increase in scope and impact only when the previous one fails.
Start with the lowest-risk checks
Close CONTROL Resonant completely and restart the PC. A restart clears a stuck driver, shader compilation task, background process, or Windows update that is preventing a clean launch. After Windows starts again, install every pending Windows update, restart once more, and check whether the game itself has an update waiting in its launcher.
Do not delete configuration files or reinstall yet. First confirm that the machine is using the required storage and memory, because a system that is below the published floor can crash or stream data poorly even when the game opens.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsConfirm the published PC floor
Remedy’s final PC requirements specify Windows 10 or 11 64-bit, 16 GB of RAM, and a 120 GB SSD for every profile. An SSD is mandatory; installing the game on a hard-disk drive does not satisfy the requirement. The figures below are targets, not guarantees. Actual performance changes with drivers, background applications, cooling, component configuration, and the rendered area.

| Profile | Resolution and frame-rate target | Quality and ray tracing | Graphics tier named by Remedy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 1080p at 30 FPS | Low, ray tracing off | Remedy’s minimum hardware profile |
| Recommended | 1440p at 60 FPS | Medium, ray tracing off | RTX 3060 Ti, RX 6700 XT, or Arc B580 |
| Enthusiast | 4K at 60 FPS | High, ray tracing off | Remedy’s enthusiast hardware profile |
| Ray-tracing minimum | 1080p at 30 FPS | Ray tracing enabled | Separate ray-tracing minimum profile |
| Ray-tracing recommended | 1440p at 60 FPS | Ray tracing enabled | Separate ray-tracing recommended profile |
| Path-tracing enthusiast | 4K at 60 FPS | Path tracing enabled | Separate path-tracing enthusiast profile |
- Keep at least 120 GB available for the installation and additional free space for patches and temporary files. The troubleshooting guidance specifically calls for enough free SSD space for updates and temporary data.
- Use the profile closest to your hardware before changing individual settings. A system that meets the 1440p/60 target with ray tracing off should not be expected to hold that result with ray tracing or path tracing enabled.
- The game supports uncapped frame rates, DLSS 4.5, FSR 4.1, ray tracing, path tracing, HDR, and ultrawide displays. These features can change GPU load substantially, so test them one at a time.
Decide whether the problem is hardware or configuration
Compare your system with the profile that matches the way you want to play, not just with the word “recommended.” The 1080p/30 Low profile is a different target from 1440p/60 Medium, and both are different from 4K/60 High or either ray-tracing target. If the PC is below the 16 GB RAM or SSD requirement, software changes cannot make it compliant. If it meets the floor but falls below your chosen resolution and frame-rate target, first lower settings and disable ray tracing before considering a purchase.
An upgrade is most relevant when the machine cannot reach the desired profile after current drivers, stock clocks, minimal background software, and sensible settings are in place. The published recommendation names an RTX 3060 Ti, RX 6700 XT, or Arc B580 for 1440p/60 at Medium without ray tracing. It does not promise that every system with one of those GPUs will produce the same result, because cooling, CPU configuration, drivers, applications, and the rendered area also matter. Treat the profiles as planning references rather than a guaranteed benchmark.
Update the graphics driver correctly
Outdated or damaged graphics drivers can produce launch failures, crashes, compatibility errors, and uneven frame delivery. Identify the installed GPU with Microsoft’s DirectX Diagnostic Tool, then install the current driver from the GPU manufacturer.

- Press
Win+R, enterdxdiag, and press Enter. - Open the Display or Render tab and note the GPU model and driver information.
- Download the current driver for that model from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel’s official support site. Select the exact Windows 10/11 64-bit edition when offered.
- Run the installer, choose its clean-install option if the vendor provides one, and restart Windows after it finishes.
- Launch the game before restoring overlays, overclocks, or other optional utilities. This gives you a clean baseline for comparison.
A normal vendor clean installation is preferable to immediately using a third-party removal utility. If the driver update does not resolve the issue, continue through the runtime and file checks below before escalating to DDU.
Use Display Driver Uninstaller only as an advanced repair
Remedy identifies Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) as an advanced step, not a routine first action. Use it when a normal driver installation has failed, the wrong driver remains after a GPU change, or repeated driver corruption is suspected.
- Create a Windows restore point before removing anything.
- Download the current driver for your GPU so it is ready offline or locally.
- Boot Windows into Safe Mode.
- Run DDU to remove the existing display driver and restart when prompted.
- Install the current NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel driver, then restart again.
- Test CONTROL Resonant with default graphics settings before adding optional tuning.
Because DDU changes a core system component, do not use it merely because one game stutters once. If the game becomes less stable after the cleanup, use the restore point or reinstall the vendor driver and seek support rather than repeatedly removing drivers.

Repair DirectX and Windows runtime components
Windows Update should be current before you repair individual runtimes. Remedy also points to Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer for missing legacy DirectX components. Launch and runtime errors can require the latest supported Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables in both x86 and x64 versions and an updated .NET Framework.
- Run Windows Update until no further updates are offered, then restart.
- Install the current DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer if the error mentions a missing DirectX component.
- Install the supported Visual C++ Redistributable packages for both x86 and x64. A 64-bit game can still call a 32-bit component.
- Update the .NET Framework when the launcher or an error message identifies it as a dependency.
- Restart Windows and try the game before making another change.
Do not download individual DLL files from unofficial repositories. Reinstalling the supported Microsoft packages is safer and leaves Windows’ component registration intact.
Verify the game files before reinstalling
A failed update, interrupted download, or damaged archive can cause a crash at launch, a freeze during loading, or missing assets. Verification replaces only files that fail the launcher’s integrity check and is therefore less disruptive than a full reinstall.
Steam
- Open Library.
- Right-click CONTROL Resonant and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish, allow any files to redownload, and restart the launcher before testing.
Epic Games Store
- Open Library.
- Find CONTROL Resonant, select the three-dot menu, and choose Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Wait for the check and any replacement downloads to complete, then relaunch the game.
Back up saves where the platform supports local copies and let cloud synchronization finish before deleting files or uninstalling. Reinstall only after verification, driver and runtime checks, and conflict isolation have failed.
Isolate overlays, monitoring tools, and unstable tuning
Background utilities can hook into the renderer, consume CPU time, capture frames, or interfere with anti-cheat and input layers. For one diagnostic launch, close unnecessary browser tabs, recording software, RGB-control utilities, and hardware-monitoring applications.

- Exit video-capture and streaming tools before testing a crash or stutter.
- Return CPU, GPU, and memory overclocks or undervolts to their stock settings. A setting that is stable in a benchmark can still fail during shader compilation or a particular game scene.
- If security software is blocking the confirmed game executable, add a temporary allow-list exception for testing. Do not permanently disable antivirus or firewall protection; remove the exception if it does not solve the problem.
Use a controlled test: change one utility or setting, launch the same scene or menu, and observe whether the symptom returns. If stability improves, restore tools individually rather than turning everything back on at once.

Tell stutter apart from low average FPS
Low average FPS means the system is consistently rendering too slowly for the selected target. Stutter is an uneven delivery of frames: the counter may look acceptable while individual frame times spike. That distinction determines what to test. For low FPS, start with the graphics tier, resolution, ray tracing state, and GPU load. For stutter, prioritize SSD space, overlays, recording tools, unstable tuning, and features that create large frame-time spikes.
Use the same menu or game area for each comparison. Change one setting, restart the game if required, and repeat the test. Switching several options at once can make the symptom disappear without revealing its cause. An uncapped frame rate is useful for measuring the system’s ceiling, but a sensible cap can produce steadier delivery when the GPU is continuously saturated. Test the cap in the area where the problem is visible rather than assuming it will help everywhere.
Tune graphics against the target your hardware can meet
Start with the published profile closest to your system. If the average frame rate is low or frame delivery is uneven, reduce demanding features before lowering every setting indiscriminately.
For a low average frame rate
- Move from the recommended or enthusiast preset toward Medium or Low.
- Turn ray tracing or path tracing off unless your system is explicitly targeting one of Remedy’s ray-tracing profiles.
- Use DLSS 4.5 or FSR 4.1 if your GPU and selected mode support it, then compare image quality and frame pacing.
- Use a sensible frame-rate cap instead of leaving the rate uncapped when the GPU is constantly saturated. Test the cap in the same area where performance drops.
For stutter while average FPS looks acceptable
- Check that the game is on the required SSD and that the drive has free space for updates and temporary files.
- Close recording, browser, RGB, and monitoring utilities that may wake the CPU or intercept frames.
- Disable overlays temporarily and test again.
- Return all CPU, GPU, and memory tuning to stock settings.
- Reduce ray tracing or path tracing first, because these features can create large frame-time spikes even when the displayed average seems reasonable.
For image-quality or display-specific problems
- Confirm the selected resolution and refresh rate match the monitor.
- Toggle HDR and ultrawide presentation separately; test with standard dynamic range and a conventional aspect ratio to isolate a display-path issue.
- Change only one upscaling or ray-tracing option at a time so you can identify which feature changes behavior.
Remedy’s targets describe intended performance tiers rather than a guaranteed FPS result. Drivers, cooling, background applications, component configuration, and the area rendered can all move the result above or below a target.
Choose the next action by symptom
| Symptom | First low-risk action | Main dependency to check | Reversible? | Escalate when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crash at launch | Restart, apply Windows and game updates, then confirm requirements | Driver, DirectX, Visual C++, .NET, or a blocked executable | Yes | Runtime repair, file verification, and conflict isolation do not change the crash |
| Freeze during loading or play | Verify files and close overlays and recording tools | Damaged files, SSD space, driver state, or unstable overclock | Yes | Verified files and stock hardware settings still freeze |
| Persistent stutter | Confirm SSD installation, disable overlays, and use the appropriate graphics tier | Storage streaming, background hooks, ray tracing, or frame-time spikes | Yes | Stutter remains with a clean driver, stock settings, and minimal background software |
| Low average FPS | Compare hardware with the 1080p/30, 1440p/60, or 4K/60 target and reduce demanding settings | GPU tier, ray tracing state, cooling, and rendered area | Yes | The result is far below the matching target after driver and software checks |
When a reinstall is justified
A reinstall is the broadest local repair and should follow, not replace, verification. Consider it when the launcher repeatedly reports damaged files, an update cannot complete, or the game still fails after current drivers, runtimes, stock hardware settings, and conflict isolation have been tested.
- Allow cloud synchronization to complete and back up local saves where supported.
- Uninstall the game through its launcher.
- Restart Windows.
- Install it again on an SSD with enough free space for the game, updates, and temporary files.
- Launch once with default settings and no overlays before restoring custom graphics or utilities.
Do not delete save or configuration folders unless support specifically instructs you. A reinstall cannot repair a failing SSD, unstable memory, overheating component, or incompatible driver, so those causes still need to be addressed if the clean installation behaves the same way.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does CONTROL Resonant keep crashing on PC?
Start with a restart, pending Windows and game updates, and the published requirements. Then update the NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel driver, repair DirectX, Visual C++ and .NET components, verify the game files, and test with overlays and overclocks disabled. If the crash remains, provide Remedy Player Support with the error text and diagnostic reports.
How do I stop CONTROL Resonant stuttering?
Confirm that the game is installed on the required SSD with free space, close recording, browser, RGB and monitoring utilities, disable Steam, Discord and NVIDIA overlays for a test, and return CPU, GPU and memory tuning to stock. Reduce ray tracing or path tracing before lowering every other setting.
Why is my FPS low even though my PC meets the requirements?
The requirements are performance targets, not guarantees. Compare your hardware and settings with the specific 1080p/30, 1440p/60 or 4K/60 profile, check cooling and background applications, and remember that ray tracing and path tracing use separate, more demanding targets.
Should I update drivers, verify files, or reinstall first?
Follow the least-disruptive order: restart and update Windows and the game, confirm the SSD and requirements, update the graphics driver and runtimes, verify files, isolate software conflicts, and reinstall only if those steps fail.

Is an SSD really required?
Yes. Remedy lists an SSD as required for every PC setup, along with Windows 10/11 64-bit, 16 GB of RAM and 120 GB of storage. Leave additional free SSD capacity for updates and temporary files.
Do I need DDU for one crash or a brief stutter?
No. Use the GPU vendor’s normal clean-install option first. DDU is an advanced repair for persistent driver corruption or a failed normal installation; create a restore point, use Safe Mode and reinstall the current vendor driver afterward.
Can overlays or antivirus cause the problem?
They can interfere with rendering or block the executable. Disable Steam, Discord and NVIDIA overlays and close recording and monitoring tools for a controlled test. If security software is blocking the confirmed executable, use a temporary allow-list exception and remove it if it does not help; never leave protection disabled permanently.
