If Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor crashes, starts strangely, or appears to have lost a save on Nintendo Switch 2, begin with the console-level fixes Nintendo recommends: restart the system, install the latest Switch 2 system update, update the game, run the title’s corrupted-data check, and confirm that you launched the game with the Nintendo user who created the save. Save data is tied to that user and stored in the console’s internal storage, not on the game card.
For a missing or older save, do not immediately download cloud data. Open System Settings → Data Management → Save Data Cloud, compare the latest console and cloud timestamps, and choose the copy you actually want to keep. Either Back Up Save Data or Download Save Data overwrites the other copy, and Nintendo warns that overwritten save data cannot be recovered.
Which Shadow of Mordor release this covers
This guide is for the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. A current reference entry identifies it as an Aspyr-developed and published release dated September 30, 2026. Advice for another platform, a different Nintendo account, or an emulated copy may not match the save and update behavior described here.

Run this five-minute triage first
Use this sequence for a crash, failure to start, unexplained reset, or unusual gameplay behavior. It addresses the common causes that Nintendo documents for Switch 2 software problems before you make any save-data decision.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Restart the Switch 2. A full restart clears a temporary software state without deleting your saves.
- Install the latest console system update. An outdated system can interfere with current software.
- Check for a Shadow of Mordor software update. Apply any update offered for the title before testing again.
- Run the console’s corrupted-data check for Shadow of Mordor. Let the check finish and follow the console’s repair or redownload instruction if it reports a problem.
- Start the game under the original Nintendo user. Save data belongs to the user profile that created it; selecting another profile can make a perfectly good save look missing.
Test the game after each change. If the problem disappears, avoid changing save data or downloading a cloud copy unnecessarily.
Fix crashes and startup failures
Restart before reinstalling anything
Close the game and restart the Switch 2 before taking more disruptive action. This is the least destructive step and preserves both local save data and any cloud backup. If the title works after the restart, the incident was likely a temporary console or software state rather than proof of a permanent game defect.
Bring both the system and title up to date
Install the newest Switch 2 system update, then check Shadow of Mordor for its own software update. Updating only one side leaves an outdated component in place. Restart the console after updates complete and launch the game from the same Nintendo user that normally plays it.

Use the corrupted-data check
Switch 2 includes a built-in corrupted-data check for installed software. Run that check specifically for Shadow of Mordor when the game crashes during startup, closes unexpectedly, displays damaged content, or behaves differently after an interrupted update. The check is a diagnostic step; it does not establish that the game’s save itself is corrupt, and it should not be treated as permission to overwrite a newer save.

Do not assume a reported symptom is a confirmed defect
Community discussions mention image quality, performance, and feature behavior, but there is no authoritative Shadow of Mordor Switch 2 defect list or matching patch note establishing a universal crash pattern. Treat an online report as an individual observation, not a diagnosis for every player. Nintendo or Aspyr would need to publish a matching notice before a game-specific bug or patch resolution could be called confirmed.
When gameplay looks wrong or acts strangely
Separate a one-time state from a repeatable fault
After restarting and updating, reproduce the symptom once under the correct user. Note when it occurs: immediately at launch, while loading a particular area, after waking the console, or during a repeatable action. A symptom that vanishes after a restart is different from one that occurs at the same point every time.
Use evidence-based language
Do not promise that changing a visual setting, altering Nemesis-system behavior, or adjusting performance options will fix every Switch 2 copy. The available authoritative guidance supports console updates, title updates, restart, corrupted-data checking, and user verification; it does not document a universal in-game workaround. If the issue continues after those steps, record the exact behavior and contact Nintendo or the game’s publisher with the version, console system version, user profile, and the steps that reproduce it.

- Do not download cloud data merely because gameplay is unusual; first compare timestamps in Save Data Cloud.
- Do not switch users to test a theory without returning to the profile that owns the save.
- Do not describe a visual or performance report as a confirmed Switch 2 bug unless an official notice matches it.
Why a save can appear to be missing or reset
Save data is tied to a Nintendo user
Switch save data is stored for each Nintendo user in the console’s internal storage. Select the same user profile that created the Shadow of Mordor save. Starting the game under a different user creates a separate save context, so the original progress can appear absent even though it remains on the system.

The game card does not carry the save
Save data is not stored on the Shadow of Mordor game card. Moving the card, inserting a different card, or reinstalling the title does not transfer the user’s progress by itself. The relevant local copy remains in the internal storage associated with the original user and console.
A different console changes what is available locally
When you play on another Switch 2, that console may not contain the first system’s local save. Cloud recovery can supply a backup only when the title is eligible, the intended user has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, and the console has an internet connection.
Recover a save safely with Save Data Cloud
Check the requirements before choosing an overwrite
- An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required.
- The console must be connected to the internet.
- Shadow of Mordor must support Save Data Cloud and appear in the selected user’s cloud-save list.
Some software does not support cloud backup. Do not promise that recovery is possible until Shadow of Mordor is visible in the list for the correct user.
Open the cloud-save screen
- Open System Settings.
- Select Data Management.
- Select Save Data Cloud.
- Choose the Nintendo user who owns the save.
- Select Shadow of Mordor if it appears.
Nintendo’s screen shows the latest cloud-backup timestamp and the latest save currently on the console. Read both timestamps before selecting an action.

Choose the copy you intend to preserve
| What the timestamps show | Action | What it preserves | Destructive effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| The console save is newer | Back Up Save Data | Uploads the newer local progress to the cloud | Replaces the older cloud copy; the overwritten cloud data cannot be recovered through Nintendo’s documented process |
| The cloud save is newer | Download Save Data | Restores the newer cloud progress to the console | Replaces the local copy; the overwritten local data cannot be recovered through Nintendo’s documented process |
| The title does not appear for the selected user | Do not choose either overwrite action | No eligible cloud copy is shown for that user and title | There is no displayed cloud backup to restore or update |
Nintendo’s warning is explicit: “When using either of the following two options (Back Up Save Data or Download Save Data), keep in mind that any overwritten save data cannot be recovered.” Treat the timestamp comparison as a final checkpoint, not a formality.
Example decisions
You played recently on this console
If the console timestamp is later than the cloud timestamp, select Back Up Save Data only after confirming that the local progress is the version you want to keep. This publishes that local copy as the new cloud backup.
You made progress on another console
If the cloud timestamp is later than the local timestamp, select Download Save Data to replace the local copy with the newer cloud version. Launch Shadow of Mordor under the same Nintendo user after the download completes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →You cannot identify which progress matters
Stop at the timestamp screen. Choosing either option will overwrite one copy, so an uncertain choice can permanently remove the version you hoped to retain. Record the displayed times and decide whether local or cloud progress is more valuable before continuing.

Handle cloud-save errors and unavailable automatic backup
If Save Data Cloud reports “An error has occurred” or automatic backup is unavailable, Nintendo’s documented sequence is to install the latest system update and then inspect the Save Data Cloud list for the affected title. Reopen the list under the correct user and verify whether Shadow of Mordor appears before attempting recovery.
If the title still does not appear, the available guidance does not establish that a cloud backup exists. Check the Nintendo Switch Online membership, internet connection, selected user, and title eligibility. Do not infer that a missing menu entry is a Shadow of Mordor gameplay bug or that reinstalling the game will create a recoverable cloud save.
Playbooks for common situations
The game crashes before the title screen
- Restart Switch 2.
- Install the latest console system update.
- Install any Shadow of Mordor software update.
- Run the title’s corrupted-data check.
- Launch under the user that owns the save.
If the crash remains repeatable, document the point of failure and seek Nintendo or publisher support; no authoritative title-specific defect or patch resolution is established.
The game opens, but progress appears reset
- Exit without starting a new game that could overwrite or complicate the existing local state.
- Return to the Nintendo user that originally created the save.
- Remember that the save is in internal storage, not on the game card.
- Open System Settings → Data Management → Save Data Cloud for that user.
- Compare timestamps before choosing Back Up Save Data or Download Save Data.
You moved to another Switch 2
Expect the second console’s local storage to differ from the first. Sign in with the user associated with the original save, connect to the internet, and check Save Data Cloud eligibility and timestamps. Download only when the cloud copy is the version you want to place on the new console.
You see unusual performance or visual behavior
Restart, update the system and title, run the corrupted-data check, and retest under the correct user. Community reports are not proof of a universal defect, and there is no authoritative list that links every such symptom to one Switch 2 setting.
Prevent avoidable save loss
- Use one consistent Nintendo user for your Shadow of Mordor progress.
- Keep Switch 2 and the game updated.
- Maintain an active Nintendo Switch Online membership if you rely on cloud backup.
- Connect to the internet and verify that Shadow of Mordor appears in Save Data Cloud rather than assuming eligibility.
- Before backing up or downloading, compare the displayed local and cloud timestamps.
- Remember that either overwrite action is irreversible through Nintendo’s documented recovery process.
When to seek official support
Contact Nintendo or the publisher after the restart, update, corrupted-data check, and correct-user verification fail to resolve the issue. Provide the Switch 2 system version, Shadow of Mordor software version, Nintendo user used to launch the game, whether the title is on a game card or installed, the exact symptom, and whether it happens every time. For a save case, include the timestamps shown in Save Data Cloud and state which copy you selected, if any.
These details distinguish a console-level problem from a user-selection or save-sync mistake. They also avoid claiming a Shadow of Mordor-specific defect that has not been confirmed by Nintendo or Aspyr.
