Most ROG Xbox Ally X problems can be isolated without reinstalling a game: update Windows, Xbox and Armoury Crate SE; verify the active per-game control profile and executable; calibrate the controls; then repair the Xbox or Armoury Crate library entry. Docking problems require a different order—pair the external controller first, then set the display projection.
Start with the shortest safe troubleshooting sequence
Use this order on the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X (model RC73XA). It fixes software, profile and connection problems before you risk changing files or resetting the device.
- Install every pending update and restart. In Xbox Game Bar, open Settings Widget > More Settings > Windows Settings > Windows Update. In Armoury Crate SE, open Update Center > Check for Updates > Update All. Keep the Xbox PC app and Game Bar current as well; the April 30, 2026 Xbox update lists those components as prerequisites for its handheld features.
- Check the active control mapping. On an RC73-series device, press M1/M2 + B to view the current mappings. In Armoury Crate SE, open the affected game’s profile and verify its control mode and external-controller setting.
- Correct the game’s executable path. If automatic control mode is wrong or the buttons work in one launcher but not another, open Game Options > Game Info, choose the alternative startup path that actually launches the game, and restart the game.
- Calibrate input. Armoury Crate SE provides stick, trigger and gyro calibration. If a stick or gyro jitters, check the game’s dead-zone setting and reduce an overly aggressive anti-dead-zone range.
- Repair a missing library entry. In the Xbox library, use the + button to add a custom game or app. In Armoury Crate SE, add the game and edit its profile. If a launcher is absent, open Edge from My Apps and download that launcher there.
- For travel, prepare offline play. Sign in while online, launch each game once without a connection, and pre-download updates or downloadable content before leaving.
- For a dock, pair first. Pair the Xbox or Designed for Xbox controller before docking. Then use the Display Widget or Windows Second Screen Only projection mode to select the external display and its resolution and refresh rate.
- Escalate hardware symptoms. If controls fail in BIOS, or the Ally X will not charge or boot after updates, stop changing profiles and use ASUS registration, technical support and repair-status channels for model RC73XA.
Identify whether the fault is hardware, Windows, or one game
Reproduce the symptom in more than one place before changing settings. A button that fails in BIOS points to a physical or firmware issue; a button that fails only in one Windows game usually points to that game’s profile, input mode or startup executable.

Also note whether the problem survives a restart, whether it affects the built-in controls and an external controller in the same way, and whether it started immediately after an update. Those observations keep you from applying a dock fix to a game-profile fault or a profile fix to failing hardware.

Fix controls that do not work in a game
Confirm the profile and control mode
Armoury Crate SE is the ASUS control layer for RC73XA. It stores game-library entries, per-game control profiles, control modes, calibration, performance settings and firmware or driver updates. Open the affected title’s profile rather than relying on the global default.
Press M1/M2 + B on the handheld to display the current mappings. Compare the buttons shown there with the game’s expected layout. In the profile, check both the selected control mode and the external-controller option. A profile configured for an external pad can make the built-in controls appear dead, while a desktop or mouse-oriented mode can leave a game unable to interpret the handheld buttons.
Repair a profile that chooses the wrong startup file
Automatic control selection depends on the executable Armoury Crate SE associated with the game. Some games start through a launcher, updater or alternate executable instead of the file first detected. The result is a profile that works in one launcher but not another, or a game that opens with a desktop layout instead of a gamepad layout.
- Open Armoury Crate SE and select the game’s entry.
- Open Game Options > Game Info.
- Select the alternative path that corresponds to the file that actually starts the game.
- Save the profile and restart the game completely.
If the game has several launch modes, test the profile after starting it from the same launcher you normally use. Do not create several conflicting profiles until the correct executable is known; duplicate entries make it harder to tell which mapping is active.
Calibrate sticks, triggers and gyro
Armoury Crate SE includes separate calibration tools for the analogue sticks, triggers and gyroscope. Run the relevant calibration when an input is not detected, reaches its limit early or drifts at rest. Follow the on-screen neutral and full-range prompts without touching the controls during the neutral stage.
Calibration cannot correct every form of in-game jitter. ASUS notes that an overly small in-game dead zone can produce visible movement, especially when an anti-dead-zone setting is also aggressive. If the hardware test is stable but the game camera or character moves on its own, increase the game’s dead zone slightly or reduce its anti-dead-zone range, then retest.
When only a launcher ignores the buttons
Different launchers can trigger different Armoury Crate profiles. First verify the executable path, then confirm that the profile is not set to an external controller or desktop control mode. If the game supports both a launcher window and a game window, bring the game itself to the foreground before testing; the launcher may not receive the same input context.
Fix a game that launches but ignores input
A successful launch proves only that Windows started a process. It does not prove that the correct input profile attached to that process. Use this branch when the title opens, displays video or reaches a menu, but A/B/X/Y, the sticks, triggers or gyro do nothing.

- Close the game and its launcher.
- In Armoury Crate SE, inspect the title’s control mode and external-controller setting.
- Open Game Options > Game Info and select the actual startup executable if the entry lists alternatives.
- Press M1/M2 + B and verify that the expected mapping is active.
- Calibrate the affected input if it is missing or erratic in Armoury Crate.
- Restart the game from the same launcher and test a menu before changing graphics or reinstalling files.
If the game responds to an external controller but not the handheld after these checks, inspect the profile’s external-controller setting again. If neither input method works in one title while other games respond, the remaining suspect is that title’s own input mode or launcher configuration rather than the Ally X hardware.
Fix games that will not launch
Update before repairing anything
Windows, Xbox Game Bar, the Xbox PC app and Armoury Crate SE can each affect launching. Complete the update sequence at the top of this guide, restart, and try the game again. An update may also replace the executable that a profile references, so revisit Game Info after a major game or launcher update.
When the Xbox library does not show an installed game
The Xbox experience can aggregate installed games and apps from other PC storefronts, but an installed title may still need a manual entry. In the Xbox library, select the + button and add a custom game or app. In Armoury Crate SE, add the game and assign its profile. Use the executable that starts the game, not a desktop shortcut or an updater that closes immediately.

If the required storefront launcher is missing, open Edge from My Apps and download the launcher. Once installed, add the game to the Xbox or Armoury Crate library and test a normal launch. A manually added entry may not inherit every metadata feature of an automatically detected title, but it gives Armoury Crate a specific process to match.
Distinguish a missing entry from a failed launch
- Missing entry: the game is installed but cannot be found in the Xbox or Armoury Crate list. Add a custom entry or launcher.
- Launch failure: the entry is visible but closes, does nothing or returns to the library. Update Windows and the Xbox components, then check whether the profile points to an obsolete executable.
- Launch succeeds, controls fail: treat it as a control-mode or executable-path problem, not a library problem.
Prepare reliable offline play
Offline use is easiest to test before travel, not at the airport or on a flight. While connected:
- Sign in to the account used by the Xbox PC app and each relevant launcher.
- Install all pending game, Windows, Xbox and Armoury Crate updates.
- Download required downloadable content.
- Disconnect from the network and launch each game far enough to reach its playable menu.
- Reconnect and resolve any sign-in or entitlement prompt before leaving.
Xbox specifically advises signing in, testing games offline and pre-downloading updates or DLC. Online-only authentication, multiplayer and cloud features can still remain unavailable without a connection even when the game itself starts.
Fix screenshots and screen capture
Armoury Crate SE’s capture feature relies on Xbox Game Bar. If pressing the capture control does nothing, open Game Bar manually first. If it still fails, restart the Ally X and then use Microsoft’s Game Bar troubleshooting guidance rather than repeatedly changing the Armoury Crate profile.

Understand the on-screen keyboard and cursor behavior
On Windows 11 version 24H2, with update KB5053656 and Armoury Crate SE version 2.1.10.0 or later, Gamepad Layout Keyboard mode intentionally changes the active input while the on-screen keyboard is in the foreground. The controls switch to D-pad navigation and A/B/X/Y input, so the normal cursor can appear to stop responding.
This is expected behavior, not evidence that the stick has failed. Dismiss the keyboard or move focus back to the application to restore the usual cursor context. If the behavior occurs outside the keyboard or on an older software combination, update Windows and Armoury Crate before troubleshooting the hardware.
Fix docking, external controllers and displays
Pair the controller before connecting the dock
Pair an Xbox or Designed for Xbox controller while the Ally X is still handheld, then connect the dock. Xbox documents that the built-in controls are automatically disabled when a paired controller takes over in docked mode. If you dock first and pair later, the hand-off may not occur as expected; undock, pair, and reconnect in that order.

Use the Display Widget or Windows Second Screen Only projection mode after docking. Select a resolution and refresh rate supported by the television or monitor. This prevents the game from remaining on the handheld panel and avoids a mismatch between the display’s negotiated mode and the game’s current settings.
- If the external display is blank, confirm the dock’s video cable and input, then select Second Screen Only.
- If the picture appears on the handheld instead, switch the projection mode rather than moving windows blindly.
- If the refresh rate or HDR option is missing, update the Ally X and dock firmware where available and check the display’s supported modes.
- If the external controller is ignored, return to the pairing-before-docking sequence and verify that the game profile is not forcing handheld-only input.
What to compare when choosing a dock

For any dock, compare power delivery, HDR10, VRR, external-controller behavior, and the available ports and display outputs. A dock feature does not override limits imposed by the connected display or cable.
Know what Xbox’s handheld compatibility label means
In an April 30, 2026 Xbox Wire update, Xbox said its Handheld Compatibility program had reached more than 1,000 PC games that immediately play well on handheld. That is a platform-program count, not a promise of identical controls, graphics settings or performance for every title on the RC73XA.
Xbox’s April 2026 update also added support for adding, editing and launching installed games and apps from other PC storefronts in the Xbox experience. Its Gamepad Cursor feature lets a controller navigate browsers, music applications and third-party storefronts. These features can make a title easier to find or operate, but they do not replace a game’s own control profile or guarantee that every launcher exposes the same input behavior.

When to stop troubleshooting and contact ASUS
Do not keep changing profiles when the symptom is present before Windows loads. Controls that fail in BIOS, a device that cannot charge, or an Ally X that will not boot after a normal restart and update point beyond a game profile. Record the model as ROG Xbox Ally X (2025), RC73XA, note whether the failure appears in BIOS and Windows, and use ASUS’s product-registration, technical-support and repair-status channels for that model.
Before contacting support, keep a concise record of the update versions, the affected game or launcher, whether an external controller works, and whether calibration changes anything. That information helps support separate a hardware fault from a Windows or profile issue without asking you to repeat unrelated resets.
