If SpongeBob SquarePants: Titans of the Tide freezes, will not load, loses progress, or locks during a challenge, start with Nintendo’s low-risk sequence: restart the Switch, install system and game updates, then run the built-in corrupt-data check. Do not delete a Switch user or save while troubleshooting; deleting a user permanently deletes that user’s saves.
This guide separates ordinary startup problems from save-data failures and game-specific progression reports. Nintendo’s system procedures are documented fixes for downloaded software that freezes or stops responding. Reports of a final-sequence freeze, a missing cutscene, a Plankton’s Challenge lock, or a downloadable-content loop are community reports rather than confirmed defects until THQ Nordic publishes a diagnosis or patch note.
Identify the problem before changing anything
Write down exactly what happens, because the safest next step depends on the symptom. Confirm the edition, console, and user
The United States Nintendo product listing identifies SpongeBob SquarePants: Titans of the Tide – Ghostly Digital Edition, published by THQ Nordic. It lists TV, tabletop, and handheld modes, one-player support, and Save Data Cloud. The listing gives an October 13, 2026 release date and marks behavior as “Supported – Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch” for Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility. Store details can change, so compare your live listing with the edition installed on your console.

Before troubleshooting, make sure you are using the Switch user that created the save. Each user has separate save data. A game can appear to have lost progress when it has simply been opened under another profile. If the title is installed from a digital purchase, use the Nintendo Account associated with that purchase when checking downloads and updates. Do not remove a profile to test this: Nintendo states that deleting a user also permanently deletes that user’s save data.
Fix a freeze, lag, or endless loading screen
1. Restart from the HOME menu
- Press and hold the Switch POWER button for at least three seconds.
- Choose Power Options.
- Select Restart.
- After the HOME menu returns, launch Titans of the Tide and test the same action that previously failed.
A normal restart is the least disruptive recovery step. It clears a temporary stalled process without asking you to remove software or save data.
2. Force the console off only when it is unresponsive
If the screen, controllers, and HOME button do not respond, hold the POWER button for twenty seconds. Nintendo’s support wording is: “Hold down the POWER Button for twenty seconds in order to force the system to shut down.” Release the button, wait briefly, then press POWER once to start the console. Use this only when a normal restart is impossible; it is not a substitute for regular shutdown behavior.
3. Update the Switch system
- Open System Settings from HOME.
- Scroll to System.
- Select System Update.
- Allow the console to download and install any available update, then restart if prompted.
Keep the console connected to the internet during this check. A system update can resolve platform-level problems that look like a game freeze, but it does not establish that a particular Titans of the Tide progression report has been fixed.

4. Update the game separately
- Highlight Titans of the Tide on the HOME menu without launching it.
- Press the + or − button.
- Choose Software Update.
- Select Via the Internet and wait for the check to finish.
Retry the title after the update completes. If no update is offered, that means Nintendo’s service found no currently available download for your installed edition; it does not mean every reported bug has been ruled out.
5. Check for corrupt data
- Open System Settings.
- Select Data Management.
- Choose Manage Software.
- Select Titans of the Tide.
- Run Check for Corrupt Data and follow the result screen.
Run this check before deleting the game or changing accounts. It targets damaged software data and is the Nintendo-documented next step after restarting and updating.
When the game will not start or an update will not finish
Verify the connection and close the running title
Confirm that the Switch is online, then close the game completely before retrying its update. A title left running can prevent the update process from completing. Return to HOME, highlight the game, press X, confirm the close operation, and repeat the Software Update > Via the Internet path.
If the download remains stuck
- Stop waiting on an unchanged progress screen and close the software if the HOME menu is available.
- Restart the console through Power Options > Restart.
- Install any pending system update under System Settings > System > System Update.
- Retry the title update while connected to the internet.
- Run Check for Corrupt Data under System Settings > Data Management > Manage Software.
Do not promise yourself that reinstalling will cure a game-specific defect. Nintendo’s documented sequence supports restarting, updating, and checking data; it does not map a reinstall to a particular final-boss, cutscene, challenge, or downloadable-content symptom. Do not delete software until you understand where the save data is stored and whether a cloud copy exists.

Recover a missing, unreadable, or reset save
Check the selected user first
Close the game and launch it under the Switch profile that originally played it. If another user is selected, the title may legitimately show an empty or earlier-looking file. This check is essential because saves are tied to the user profile, not just to the game icon.
Use Nintendo’s non-destructive checks
- Update the Switch through System Settings > System > System Update.
- Update the title from HOME with + or −, then Software Update > Via the Internet.
- Restart the console.
- Run System Settings > Data Management > Manage Software > Titans of the Tide > Check for Corrupt Data.
- Reopen the game under the verified user and check the save-selection screen.
These steps can identify a damaged software installation, but they cannot recreate save data that has actually been deleted.
Understand the irreversible account action
Deleting a Switch user permanently deletes that user’s save data. Do not remove and recreate a profile as a troubleshooting experiment. If you are unsure which profile owns the progress, inspect each existing user without deleting any of them and record which one opens the expected save.

When Save Data Cloud restore is available
Nintendo requires both an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and an internet connection for Save Data Cloud. The US product listing marks this title as supporting Save Data Cloud, but cloud recovery still depends on the correct Nintendo Account, the correct Switch user, and a backup having existed before the local problem. Nintendo also warns that some games and applications do not support cloud backup, so never assume that a cloud copy exists solely because another title has one.

Check eligibility before relying on a restore
- Confirm the console is connected to the internet.
- Confirm the Nintendo Switch Online membership is active on the account being used.
- Confirm that the game edition and Switch user match the account that created the backup.
- Check the title’s cloud-data status through the console’s save-data management options.
If no backup is listed, cloud restoration cannot recover that particular local file. Avoid deleting the local user or save while investigating; deletion can remove the only remaining copy.

Players have described several progression problems: an empty area or missing non-player character near the final sequence, a freeze after Plankton’s Challenges, and a downloadable-content or end-level loop. These reports are anecdotal community evidence, not an official defect list. No dated Nintendo Switch patch-note page has been located that ties each symptom to a specific fixed version.
Capture a reproducible report
- Write the exact objective shown on screen.
- Record the area, boss, challenge, or cutscene that triggers the block.
- Note whether the game is the base content or downloadable content.
- Record the console model, edition, software version, and selected user.
- Describe whether a normal restart, forced shutdown, replay, or loading an earlier point changed the result.
- Take a photograph or video of the empty area, missing character, frozen screen, or loop if possible.
Use THQ Nordic’s official bug-reporting project for the report rather than presenting a community workaround as a guaranteed fix. Include the evidence above so the developer can distinguish a repeatable software defect from a one-time interrupted load.
Safe recovery attempts
- Exit to HOME and restart normally.
- Install system and title updates.
- Run the corrupt-data check.
- Re-enter the objective once and observe whether the trigger changes.
- If the same block occurs, stop repeatedly overwriting the same progress point and preserve your notes for the developer report.
There is no confirmed patch in the available official information that guarantees a cure for the final-level loop, missing cutscene, Plankton’s Challenge freeze, or downloadable-content save issue. Treat any player workaround as unverified and reversible.
