First identify which part failed: Postman may be unable to send a request, may receive a response it cannot interpret, or may complete the request while a test assertion fails. Open the Postman Console early to see the resolved URL, headers, response details, network diagnostics, and script output. That evidence helps separate a request configuration problem from an API, network, or test-code issue.
Start with the failure stage and Postman Console
In Postman, open the Console from the application’s View menu, then reproduce the problem. The Console shows details about the request Postman actually sent and the response or network behavior it observed. It is also useful when a post-response script behaves unexpectedly; Postman’s test troubleshooting guide says the Console can help identify the source.
Use the evidence to classify the failure before changing settings:
- The request will not send or times out: inspect the final URL, request configuration, and network diagnostics.
- A response arrives but looks wrong or cannot be displayed: compare its status, headers, body, and encoding with the API’s expected behavior.
- The request completes but a test fails: inspect the test result and JavaScript in the post-response script.
Postman’s request troubleshooting guide is the reference for request-side diagnostics. The steps below follow the evidence rather than assuming every failure originates in Postman.

If the request will not send or the response is unexpected
Check the actual URL and request configuration
Compare the URL in the Console with the endpoint you intended to call. Look for misspellings, extra whitespace, invalid characters, a missing path segment, or a query parameter that resolved incorrectly. Confirm the HTTP method, headers, and body as well. Check the protocol: an endpoint that expects https:// may not work with http://, and the reverse can also be wrong.
Variables and path parameters can alter the final address, so do not rely only on what appears in the request editor. The Console reveals the URL used when the request runs.
Resolve empty or unexpected variables
If a URL, header, or body field contains an empty or unexpected value, verify the variable that supplies it. Postman’s variable guide describes viewing and editing variables. Check that:
- The intended environment is active.
- The variable exists in the applicable scope and is enabled.
- It has a non-empty value, and the value is the one this request needs.
Postman can flag empty variables; an unresolved value may leave a URL or another request field invalid. Correct the variable at its source, then resend and confirm the resolved value in the Console.

Verify authentication against the API’s requirements
There is no universal credential that fixes every authentication error. Check the API provider’s instructions and confirm that Postman is configured with the required authorization method, credentials, and headers. Postman’s authentication and authorization documentation explains its authorization configuration. Some HTTPS APIs also require a client certificate in addition to ordinary authentication; confirm this with the API provider.
For an HTTP 4xx or 5xx response, inspect the returned body and the API contract rather than applying a one-size-fits-all fix based only on the status code. The response can indicate whether the problem is credentials, the requested resource, request data, or server behavior.
Investigate connectivity, proxies, and firewalls
First check whether ordinary network access works, then determine whether the issue affects one endpoint or connections more broadly. A firewall may block non-browser connections, and a proxy can affect traffic even when browser access succeeds. Postman uses operating-system proxy settings by default; inspect the Console’s network details and consult your network administrator if a managed network is blocking the connection.
If the Postman app or a Postman service itself appears unavailable, check Postman’s status information. An API request error alone does not establish that Postman’s service is down.

Check TLS and certificates without weakening verification
For HTTPS failures, check the certificate chain and whether the endpoint requires a client certificate. Postman’s request troubleshooting documentation states support for TLS 1.2 and higher; an older TLS environment may therefore be incompatible.
Postman documents a setting to disable SSL certificate verification, but treat it only as a temporary diagnostic toggle when appropriate—not as a routine fix. Prefer correcting the certificate trust or client-certificate configuration, and restore verification after any diagnostic test. Disabling verification removes an important check on the server’s identity.
Adjust a timeout only when the server needs more time
A timeout that is shorter than the endpoint’s legitimate response time can end a request too soon. Increase it only when Console evidence or the API’s expected behavior supports that explanation. A longer timeout will not repair an incorrect URL, denied access, or a server that never responds.
Confirm whether the response is valid
A server can respond with malformed headers or an encoding Postman cannot interpret as expected. Compare the response details with the API’s documentation and, when available, server logs. If the server generated an invalid response, changing Postman settings may only hide the underlying problem.

If the request runs but a test fails
A failed test usually points to an assertion or JavaScript issue, not necessarily a failed request. Open the test results and Console output, then check the value being asserted, its type, and where it was defined. Postman’s test script guide covers writing scripts that test response data.
Log the value and type you are comparing
Use console.log to inspect the relevant value and its type in the Console. A deep equality assertion compares types as well as values: the number 1 and the string "1" can look similar in output but are not equal. Update the assertion or convert the value only if that matches the API’s intended data type.
Check scope and property paths
A const declared inside one pm.test callback is scoped to that callback; another test callback cannot automatically read it. Define shared values in an appropriate outer scope or recompute them where needed.
If an assertion reports undefined, inspect the response body and schema. The property may not exist, or the path used to access it may be wrong. Confirm the actual response before changing the assertion.

Make sure the test is registered and runs
Call pm.test with both a descriptive name and a callback so Postman registers the assertion as intended. After editing the script, resend the request and confirm the test appears in the results; otherwise, the code you changed may not have run for the response you are inspecting.
When the failure is specific to Postman’s web app
If you are using the Postman web app, the selected Postman Agent and browser cross-origin restrictions (CORS) may be relevant. Treat this as a separate branch from an API response error: diagnose CORS only when the error context points to a browser or agent restriction, not merely because the endpoint failed.
When to involve the API provider or network administrator
Share the relevant Console details with the person responsible for the API or network when the request appears correctly configured but still fails. Redact secrets such as tokens, passwords, and sensitive request or response data before sharing logs. Ask the API provider to confirm the endpoint, authentication rules, expected response, certificate requirements, and server-side logs; ask the network administrator about firewall or proxy restrictions.
