If The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening on Nintendo Switch is missing an item, refusing to advance a quest, or appearing to have lost progress, update the software first, then close and relaunch it. Next verify the save’s user profile and the game’s progression requirements before treating the behavior as a confirmed bug. Nintendo’s update history documents fixes for a game-locking Marin error, while its Switch support procedures cover corrupt software, user-specific saves, and cautious cloud recovery.
Start by classifying what went wrong
“Missing item” and “stuck quest” describe several different states. A required pickup may be unavailable because a conversation, trade, key, room entrance, or inventory condition has not been completed. The item may already be in the inventory, or the game may be running under a different Switch user than the one that created the save. A software error is another possibility, but it should be investigated after the basic state checks.

Write these details down before changing the installation. A precise record separates a missed prerequisite from a repeatable software failure and gives Nintendo Support enough information to reproduce the problem.
Install the current game update
Updating is the safest first intervention. Nintendo lists version 1.1.0 as released on 4 June 2025 and says that update is required for the game’s online features. The update history also lists version 1.0.1, released on 25 October 2019, which fixed a condition that could make Marin stop moving in Toronbo Shores and lock the game. Nintendo says the update fixes saves that had already been affected by that error.

- From the Switch HOME Menu, highlight Link’s Awakening without opening it.
- Press the + or − button to open the software options.
- Choose Software Update, then select Via the Internet.
- Allow the download and installation to finish. Start the game only after the console reports that the update is complete.
If the console says the software is current, note the displayed version anyway. Include it in any support report; “current” is meaningful only when paired with the date and the user’s console state. A physical game card and a digital installation should both be checked through this same HOME Menu path.
Close the software and reload the save
A suspended Switch application can retain a bad runtime state. After an error, frozen animation, or unresponsive dialogue, press HOME, highlight the game, press X, and confirm Close. Launch the title again and load the newest valid save. If the same behavior remains, restart the console from the power menu and try once more.
Do not overwrite the only usable save while testing. If you have more than one slot, use the newest slot that still loads and keep the other slot unchanged until the problem is understood. A successful reload that restores movement or dialogue indicates that the earlier state was transient; a repeatable failure at the same location is stronger evidence for escalation.

Prove that an item or quest is actually missing
Before changing data, return to the exact room or NPC and check the ordinary progression conditions. These checks are practical diagnostics, not proof that every reported quest issue is a Nintendo-confirmed bug.
Check the prerequisite chain
- Review whether the required conversation has occurred, including any earlier dialogue with the same character.
- Confirm that a required trade or exchange was completed and that the correct resulting item is in the inventory.
- Verify that the dungeon key or other access item was obtained and that you entered the intended room rather than a similar-looking area.
- Check inventory space and the item list. A reward can seem absent when it was picked up earlier or moved into a different inventory category.
Refresh the location
Leave the room or map area, re-enter, and speak to the NPC again. Then reload the latest save and repeat the interaction once. This refreshes the scene without modifying the installation. Record exactly which action changes the result, if any.
Compare the expected trigger with the actual state
Describe the trigger in concrete terms: “after delivering the trade item, the NPC should give the next reward,” for example. Note whether the character gives an earlier line, remains silent, disappears, or blocks the entrance. That distinction matters when asking for support because it identifies the point at which the state diverges.

Check the active Switch user and save ownership
Nintendo states: “Save data is tied to each user account and is stored in the system memory.” When multiple profiles exist, launching the software under the wrong profile can make a healthy adventure appear to have vanished.

- Start Link’s Awakening from the Switch user who originally created the adventure.
- Check every visible save slot and compare play time or location with your notes.
- If another profile contains the expected progress, stop testing under the wrong profile; do not delete either user’s data.
Archiving or deleting downloaded software does not itself delete the save data. Nintendo explains that save data remains in system memory, so a digital copy can be redownloaded after the save and data checks are complete. This does not make a deleted save recoverable; it only separates software storage from the user’s save.
Check for corrupt software data and redownload when necessary
Use Nintendo’s built-in check when the title will not start, repeatedly crashes, or cannot update correctly. The check does not require deleting the save first.
- Open System Settings from HOME.
- Select Data Management.
- Choose Manage Software, then select Link’s Awakening.
- Choose Check for Corrupt Data and wait for the result.
- If the console offers Redownload, follow the prompts. Afterward, install any required software update and launch the game under the correct user.
Nintendo’s support workflow places restarting, updating, and checking data before more disruptive recovery. Keep the console connected to power and a reliable network during a redownload. A corrupt-data result concerns the installed software; it is not, by itself, evidence that the save is corrupt.
Recover from cloud data without destroying the newest local save
Cloud recovery is conditional: the account must have Nintendo Switch Online, and the game must support Save Data Cloud. Before downloading anything, compare the local save’s time and the cloud copy’s time.
- If the local copy is newer, preserve it and do not replace it with an older cloud copy.
- If the cloud copy is the only copy that contains the expected progress, document the local state first, then follow the console’s cloud-download prompts.
- Be certain which direction the transfer will go. Nintendo warns that overwritten save data cannot be recovered in the cloud-backup workflow.
Do not use cloud restoration as an experiment. Treat it as a one-way replacement unless you have first preserved the newest usable local data through a separate save slot or another supported method.

Physical card and digital-copy checks
The update and save procedures are the same whether you play from a game card or a digital installation. A card that is not being read reliably can make the title appear to have missing data, but do not erase a save to test that theory. First close the software, reseat the card according to Nintendo’s hardware guidance, and try the HOME Menu update check. If the game is digital, archiving or deleting the software does not itself remove the save in system memory; redownload only after checking the installed data and confirming the correct user.
If a physical card is damaged or unavailable, a replacement copy of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening can be considered, but verify the current retailer listing and return policy. A replacement copy cannot restore a save that was deleted, and changing copies will not fix an unmet quest prerequisite. The important diagnostic question is whether the same user and save show the same behavior after the software is current.
The documented Marin lockup in Toronbo Shores
Nintendo’s version history specifically records a problem in which Marin could stop moving in Toronbo Shores and the game could become locked. Version 1.0.1, dated 25 October 2019, addressed that condition, and Nintendo says the update also fixes saves already affected by it.
If you encounter this symptom, close the software, install the current update, and reload the affected save. Do not assume that every immobile NPC is this exact issue: note the character, location, animation, and whether the rest of the game responds. If the updated game still reproduces the lock, document those details for support.
When a missing item is probably not a confirmed bug
Nintendo’s public support material does not provide a complete, current, quest-by-quest bug list for Link’s Awakening. Community reports can help identify patterns, but they are anecdotal and should be dated. A post that describes an older version, a different user profile, or a different quest stage may not match your save.
Use a conservative standard: call the problem “unresolved” until the prerequisite checks, reload, update, user verification, and data check are complete. Call it reproducible only when the same steps produce the same result on the updated software. This wording avoids discarding a real issue while preventing a missed trade, key, or pickup from being mislabeled as a software defect.

Use a simple diagnostic worksheet
Before contacting support, make one short entry for the failed attempt. Record the date, console model, physical or digital format, software version, active user, save slot, map or dungeon, room, NPC or item, and the exact action that should have triggered progress. Then write what actually happened and whether closing, restarting, leaving the area, or reloading changed it. This prevents contradictory reports from mixing two different saves.

Keep screenshots or a brief phone recording only if they can be made without overwriting the save. The written sequence is more valuable than a general statement that the game “will not progress.”
Prepare a useful Nintendo Support report
Escalate after the failure survives the update, full restart, progression checks, correct-user check, and corrupt-data check or redownload. Include a short, repeatable sequence rather than a long narrative.
- Console model and whether the copy is physical or digital.
- Software version shown in the HOME Menu options.
- Switch user profile and save slot used.
- Exact map area, dungeon, room, NPC, or item involved.
- Quest stage and the prerequisite actions already completed.
- Latest save time and what happens after closing, restarting, and reloading.
- Any error message, crash, frozen animation, or inability to update.

- Do not delete save data to solve a software-installation problem; saves and downloaded software are stored separately.
- Do not download a cloud backup before comparing timestamps and preserving the newest local copy.
- Do not switch user profiles mid-test and then assume the different save is missing.
- Do not rely on an old community post as proof that the current version has the same defect.
- Do not repeatedly trigger a locked scene while the game is unpatched; update first.
