If Ghost of Yōtei crashes, stutters, gets stuck during a mission, or appears to have lost progress, start with the least disruptive steps: update the game and PS5, reload a checkpoint or save for a stuck mission, and restart the console for instability. Sucker Punch’s latest listed patch, 1.602, dated April 24, 2026, includes “Various rare crash fixes,” but that does not establish that every crash or performance problem has the same cause.

Start with updates and identify the symptom

Check for updates to both Ghost of Yōtei and PS5 system software before trying more involved fixes. Sucker Punch’s patch notes list version 1.602, dated April 24, 2026, with “Various rare crash fixes” under Performance and Stability. That confirms crash fixes have been included in the game’s update history; it does not identify a universal fix for stuttering or prove that a particular crash is resolved.

Note what happens and whether you can repeat it: does the game close while the PS5 remains on, does the console itself restart, does the image hitch, or does the problem occur at the same mission, setting, or action? This distinction helps you choose the right next step and describe the problem if you contact support.

  • Game closes, console stays on: update, restart the console, and check whether the crash follows a repeatable trigger.
  • Console restarts or has broader problems: treat it as a system-level issue, not just an in-game crash; use PlayStation support guidance or contact support if it persists.
  • Mission will not progress: try the game-level checkpoint and save recovery steps below before changing system settings.
  • Progress appears missing or old: protect existing save data and avoid deleting it as a troubleshooting shortcut.

Fix crashes or instability

Restart and check for a repeatable trigger

  1. Save if the game allows it, then close and reopen Ghost of Yōtei.
  2. Restart the PS5 and check that the game and console software are current.
  3. If the crash happens at a consistent point, record the mission, action, and any relevant setting. Compare that trigger with Sucker Punch’s published patch history rather than assuming every similar symptom is the same bug.

Earlier notes document fixes for specific rare cases, not evidence that those issues are currently widespread. Patch 1.008 addressed crashes during a Wolf Den mission, while moving the camera with lock-on during combat, and after the game had been idle for more than an hour. Patch 1.010 listed a rare crash with ray tracing enabled and another tied to a specific Poison and Lies sequence. Patch 1.100 included rare crash fixes and adjustments to the autosave feature. These are historical fixes; they do not diagnose a new crash on their own. See the relevant Sucker Punch patch notes.

If the game will not start or appears to have an install problem

For launch or installation problems, Sony’s PlayStation game-launch troubleshooting recommends checking updates, restarting, and reinstalling when needed. If Ghost of Yōtei is installed on USB extended storage, move it to PS5 console storage and test again. These are general PS5 troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes for every in-game hitch or crash.

What to do when a mission is stuck

Try these game-level recovery options in order, starting with the one least likely to discard recent progress. Sony’s Santa Monica Studio support page offers this general advice for stuck progression; it is not a Yōtei-specific guarantee.

Ghost of Yotei (PS5)
  • Discover a bold, new story of a warrior in Japan who is on her own mission of vengeance.
  • Set 300 years after the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yōtei is a standalone experience set in 1600s rural Japan. The story follows a haunted, lone mercenary named Atsu. Thirsty for revenge, she travels through the beautiful, rugged landscapes of northern Japan, hunting those who killed her family many years earlier.
  • Sixteen years after her family’s death, Atsu’s quest across Ezo brings her to unexplored lands in search of a gang of six outlaws, but she finds much more than vengeance. Throughout her journey, Atsu will discover unlikely allies, and greater bonds than she could have imagined.
  1. Restart the checkpoint. Use the in-game option if it is available.
  2. Load the closest save. Choose the nearest manual save or autosave that puts you before the blocked point.
  3. Quit and reload. Exit to the game’s menu, then load that save again.
  4. Close and reopen the application. If reloading within the game does not help, close it from the PS5 interface and launch it again.

See Santa Monica Studio’s progression troubleshooting for the general steps.

Protect saves if progress seems missing

Ghost of Yōtei supports manual saves, as stated on its official PlayStation game page. When the option is available, make a manual save before experimenting with recovery steps. Do not delete saved data as a routine fix: deleting it may remove the progress you are trying to recover.

If a save appears missing, out of date, or damaged, the available official guidance does not establish a Yōtei-specific method for restoring every cloud/local mismatch or damaged save. Avoid guessing which copy to overwrite. Contact PlayStation or Sucker Punch support for help with a persistent save problem, and preserve the data you still have while seeking guidance.

Use PS5 Safe Mode cautiously

If the problem looks broader than one game, PlayStation’s Safe Mode guide describes options that may help with system-feature issues or performance drops. Clear System Software Cache and Rebuild Database are different from resetting the console: cache clearing removes temporary system data, while rebuilding scans the drive and creates a new content database. Neither is a proven fix for every Ghost of Yōtei performance symptom.

Do not select Reset PS5 or Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) as early troubleshooting steps: Sony states that both delete user data. Back up important data before any destructive operation. If the console continues to fail after non-destructive troubleshooting, contact PlayStation support about next steps rather than repeatedly resetting it.
