When Destiny 2 disconnects, start by checking Bungie and your platform’s service-status notices. A server outage, maintenance event, or backend test can look exactly like a failed home network. If services are operating normally, work from least disruptive to most technical: fully restart the game, clear the relevant console or PC launcher cache, power-cycle the modem and router, stop heavy network activity, and test with Ethernet.
The code then narrows the investigation. WEASEL and CENTIPEDE usually describe broad connectivity failures; BEAVER, FLATWORM, and LEOPARD point more often to peer-to-peer, NAT, packet-loss, or router problems; CABBAGE indicates that router communication may be blocked. ACCORDION and CATTLE concern matchmaking-server connectivity, while CHICKEN is a general connection error and LYCHEE can be transient or related to backend testing.
Start with the least disruptive checks
- Check service status first. Look at Bungie Help announcements and the service-status channel for your console or PC platform. Do this before changing NAT, firewall, or port settings. If Destiny is offline or Bungie is testing backend systems, local changes will not restore access.
- Exit Destiny 2 completely. Do not leave it suspended or running in the background. Relaunch it and test one activity. A one-off disconnect that does not return usually needs no deeper change.
- Clear the appropriate cache. On a console, use the platform maker’s documented cache-clearing procedure after closing the game. On PC, exit Destiny 2 and the launcher, then use that launcher’s documented cache-clearing method. Cache clearing is safer than reinstalling because it does not remove the game installation.
- Power-cycle networking hardware. Shut down the modem and router, wait for them to finish powering off, start the modem, allow it to reconnect, then start the router. Restart the console or PC afterward. Use this step when disconnects repeat or several different error codes appear.
- Stop competing traffic. Pause video streams, cloud backups, file transfers, game updates, and other downloads or uploads while testing. Ask other household users to do the same for one controlled session.
- Run a wired test. Connect the console or PC directly to the primary router with Ethernet and play long enough to reproduce the problem. A stable wired session identifies Wi‑Fi as the leading suspect; an error that continues on Ethernet points toward the router, ISP path, Bungie, or the platform service.
Keep a short log while testing: date and time, activity, error code, whether other devices were busy, whether you were on Wi‑Fi or Ethernet, and whether the issue affected one character, one platform, or the whole household. This turns “it disconnects sometimes” into evidence that support teams can use.
What each Destiny 2 code usually indicates

Code-specific diagnosis
WEASEL: broad networking failure
WEASEL is an all-encompassing networking message rather than a precise component diagnosis. If Destiny 2 will not relaunch after the message, perform a full power cycle of the console before changing router settings. Cross Save does not itself cause WEASEL. However, signing in to the same account on multiple platforms at the same time can contribute, so sign out everywhere except the device you are testing.

CENTIPEDE: connection to Bungie servers was lost
CENTIPEDE describes a general loss of connection to Bungie’s servers. A strict or Type 3 NAT, ISP restrictions, packet loss, or a temporary problem affecting your geographic internet route can all contribute. If other online services are also unstable, treat the problem as an internet-path issue rather than a Destiny-only setting. If Destiny is the only affected service, continue with the wired test and the NAT/firewall checks later in this guide.
BEAVER, FLATWORM, and LEOPARD: peer-to-peer reachability
These codes indicate that Destiny could not connect to another player’s console. They are especially sensitive to packet loss, unstable Wi‑Fi, strict NAT, unusual router behavior, and multiple consoles sharing one router. UPnP may improve peer reachability when the router supports it correctly. Test one console at a time first; adding several consoles before confirming a stable baseline can make the symptom harder to isolate.
CABBAGE: router communication is blocked
CABBAGE may occur when router settings block communications to or from Destiny services. First connect the console or PC directly to the primary router rather than through a secondary router, extender, or unusual network segment. If that resolves the problem, the intervening equipment or its configuration is the likely cause. Bungie’s CABBAGE guidance discusses UPnP and firewall adjustments for affected Technicolor and Thomson configurations; follow the instructions for your exact router model instead of copying settings from a different device.

CHICKEN is not a narrow diagnosis. Use the basic sequence—wired test, cache clearing, network-hardware restart, and service-status check—then compare the result with other devices and games. If the error appears only during heavy household traffic, investigate congestion. If it occurs on Ethernet while the rest of the household connection is healthy, record the times and contact the ISP or Bungie support as appropriate.

ACCORDION: matchmaking-server connection
ACCORDION concerns connecting to or maintaining a connection to matchmaking servers. A single occurrence can be transient. Repeated occurrences after a clean restart and wired test justify reviewing NAT behavior and the router’s port-forwarding guidance. Make one router change at a time and test after each change so you can undo the change that made matters worse.
CATTLE: matchmaking connectivity
CATTLE also points to matchmaking-server connectivity. Firewall or peer-to-peer blocking, NAT restrictions, and temporary packet loss are possible contributors. If the code appears only when joining a particular activity or group, compare sessions with different fireteams and note whether the same household connection works for solo play.
LYCHEE: retry before reinstalling
Retry and relaunch Destiny 2 before taking any destructive action. LYCHEE can occur during backend testing, so check Bungie announcements. Reinstalling should be a last resort, after service-status checks, cache clearing, hardware restarts, wired testing, and network investigation have failed.

Bungie describes Destiny as an online shared-world shooter that requires a constant, stable internet connection and strongly recommends a wired connection for the best experience. Wi‑Fi adds variables that are difficult to see from an in-game error: radio interference, channel congestion, distance from the access point, competing devices, retransmissions, and short packet-loss bursts.

A Cat6 Ethernet cable is a practical diagnostic purchase because it lets you connect directly to the primary router without changing the rest of the network. The result is more informative than a generic speed test:
- Ethernet stable, Wi‑Fi unstable: improve access-point placement, reduce channel congestion, and move the console or PC away from interference before changing NAT settings.
- Ethernet and Wi‑Fi both fail: inspect the router, ISP path, platform service, and Bungie status.
- Only one room or device fails: look for local signal quality, a damaged cable, an overloaded access point, or a device-specific network setting.
Do not treat a high speed-test result as proof that Destiny’s connection is healthy. Short bursts of packet loss or latency variation can disconnect a live session even when average download speed looks excellent.
Bandwidth, household traffic, and packet loss
Bungie’s current Network Setup guidance gives planning figures of up to 1 Mbps download and up to 1 Mbps upload for Destiny 2, and up to 1 GB of data per hour of live gameplay. These are maximum planning figures, not a promise that every session consumes the maximum. The more important issue is whether another activity saturates the connection or causes queueing and packet loss.

During a controlled test, pause:
- 4K or live video streaming;
- cloud backup and photo synchronization;
- large file transfers and peer-to-peer sharing;
- operating-system, launcher, and game updates;
- other online games or voice/video sessions using the same uplink.
If Destiny works only after those activities stop, the connection may need traffic management rather than a faster advertised plan. Ask the ISP whether the line shows congestion, packet loss, or an outage, especially if failures occur at the same busy times each day.

NAT, UPnP, firewalls, and port forwarding
Advanced router changes belong after service-status checks, cache clearing, power-cycling, and Ethernet testing. They can improve reachability, but an incorrect rule can expose services, conflict with another router, or make troubleshooting harder.
NAT type
A strict or Type 3 NAT can prevent some peer-to-peer and matchmaking connections. CENTIPEDE, BEAVER, FLATWORM, LEOPARD, ACCORDION, and CATTLE are the codes in this guide most closely associated with NAT-related investigation. Check the NAT result shown by your platform, then compare it with the router’s operating mode. Two routers performing address translation—such as a main router behind an ISP gateway—can create double NAT.
UPnP
UPnP allows supported games and consoles to request the ports they need from the router. Bungie identifies UPnP as a possible remedy for some peer-connectivity and CABBAGE cases. Enable or disable it only according to the router manufacturer’s current documentation, and test the result. If several consoles share one router, verify that the router handles their mappings correctly.

A firewall that blocks Destiny traffic can produce CABBAGE or matchmaking failures. Do not disable the firewall permanently as a first experiment. Instead, use the router’s documented application, device, or rule controls, make the smallest reversible change, and test one session.

Port forwarding
Repeated ACCORDION or other matchmaking failures may justify port-forwarding review. Use the exact ports and device instructions supplied for your platform and router; the correct values vary by platform and are not interchangeable. Reserve a consistent local address for the tested console or PC if the router’s instructions require it, document every rule, and remove obsolete rules after testing.
When the problem is probably outside your home
Several clues shift responsibility away from the console or router:
- Bungie or the platform reports an outage, maintenance event, or backend test.
- Multiple devices lose connectivity at the same time.
- Ethernet fails in the same way as Wi‑Fi.
- Packet loss or latency spikes appear at repeatable times, especially during neighborhood peak periods.
- The ISP confirms a line fault, traffic restriction, congestion event, or outage.
- You are on a university, workplace, hotel, or other managed network where firewall and peer-to-peer policy is outside your control.
Geographic routing problems can resolve without any change in your home network. Bungie has documented an investigation involving 25% packet loss from the UK; the support page does not state a year for that incident. If your tests point to an upstream event, preserve your timing log and give it to the ISP or Bungie Help rather than repeatedly changing router settings.
A practical escalation path
Escalate to Bungie Help or the platform service
Do this when the official status channels show an incident, when LYCHEE coincides with a published backend test, or when a repeatable error continues on a known-stable Ethernet connection with no household congestion. Include the exact code, platform, region, time in UTC or your local time zone, activity being attempted, and whether other games or services worked.
Escalate to the ISP
Contact the ISP when the connection shows packet loss, an outage, recurring congestion, traffic restrictions, or a problem affecting multiple devices. Ask for line-quality and packet-loss checks, not only an advertised-speed check. Mention whether the issue disappears on a different connection if you have a safe way to test one.
Escalate to the router manufacturer
Use router support when the direct-to-primary-router test works but the normal topology fails, when UPnP mappings behave unexpectedly, or when double NAT and firewall controls are unclear. Provide the router model, firmware version if shown in its interface, NAT result, and the single change that altered the symptom.

Preventing repeat disconnects
- Keep the console or PC on Ethernet when practical, especially for competitive or long sessions.
- Use the primary router for the gaming device during troubleshooting; add extenders, mesh nodes, or secondary routers only after the baseline is stable.
- Schedule large updates and backups outside play sessions.
- Keep one documented router configuration instead of accumulating experimental port rules.
- When several codes recur, review the timing log for Wi‑Fi interference, household congestion, packet loss, or ISP events before assuming each code is a separate fault.
- Recheck service status before every major configuration change; a temporary Bungie-side incident can otherwise lead to unnecessary and risky local edits.
