If your MCP browser server screenshot stops at the browser window, check the actual screenshot tool call. For Playwright MCP, set fullPage: true and omit target. The full-page option captures the page’s scrollable extent; target selects one element and cannot be used with fullPage. These instructions apply to Playwright MCP; other MCP browser servers may use different tools and arguments.
Use the full-page option without an element target
Playwright MCP’s browser_take_screenshot tool captures the viewport by default unless you request a different scope. To capture the full scrollable page, set fullPage to true and leave out target.

}Saving to a filename gives you an artifact to inspect directly. The current tool documentation describes fullPage as the full-page capture option and says it cannot be combined with target: Playwright MCP documentation.
Check the tool call your client actually sent
A natural-language request such as “take a full-page screenshot” does not guarantee the client sent the right arguments. Inspect the generated tool call and confirm that it contains fullPage: true. If it includes target, remove that property for a whole-page capture.

Use the parameter names in the schema exposed by the server you are running. Current Playwright MCP documentation uses target to identify an element. A GitHub issue dated September 2, 2026 reported an earlier example that used ref even though the implementation expected target; according to the report, the unrecognized argument was ignored, resulting in a viewport capture. This is one possible cause, not an explanation for every clipped screenshot: Playwright MCP issue tracker.
Diagnose where the screenshot stops
- It ends at the browser viewport: Check whether
fullPage: truereached the server. If it is absent or was ignored, the tool may have captured only the viewport. - It ends at the edge of a component: Look for a
targetargument. That requests an element capture, not the whole page. - The image file is complete, but the response looks cut off: Check whether the client omitted or truncated inline image data. Compare the saved file with the tool response before changing capture settings.
- The file itself is missing content that should be lower on the page: Establish whether the content had appeared in the page by the time the screenshot was taken. The screenshot option captures the scrollable page extent; it cannot include content that was not present in that extent at capture time.
Investigate page loading when the arguments are correct
If the tool call has fullPage: true, no target, and the saved image is still incomplete, troubleshoot the page’s state rather than assuming a universal MCP or browser defect.

- Wait for a known page-ready signal, such as a specific selector becoming visible, if your MCP workflow supports it.
- If the page loads content as you scroll, scroll through it before capturing, then take another full-page screenshot. Treat this as a diagnostic: page behavior varies, and scrolling is not a guaranteed fix.
- Record the MCP server or package version, client, browser engine, page URL (or a sanitized reproduction), exact tool arguments, and whether the saved image or only the inline response is incomplete.

Keep resolution and image delivery separate from page scope
The screenshot scale setting changes image resolution, not whether the capture covers the full page. The documented css scale uses CSS pixels and is the default; device scale uses the device pixel ratio for a higher-resolution image. If the screenshot ends at a boundary, check fullPage and target before changing scale.

Playwright MCP returns image data inline when no filename is specified. Its documented imageResponses modes are allow, omit, and only, with allow as the default. For example, --image-responses=omit can reduce inline response payload, but it does not change the captured page extent or screenshot dimensions. See the Playwright MCP documentation and repository.
