Classify the response before changing code. A Claude API 429 with rate_limit_error can be a temporary request limit, a monthly usage-tier spending cap, or a Claude Code workspace spending limit. Only the first kind is a normal cool-down; a spending-cap 429 may have no retry-after header and can continue until access is restored. A 529 with overloaded_error means Anthropic’s service is temporarily overloaded. A 500 is an internal API error that normally warrants bounded exponential-backoff retries, while a 504 timeout may improve when you stream long responses through the Messages API.
The safe production pattern is: capture the complete structured error, distinguish a retryable event from a hard limit, throttle and queue work centrally, honor retry-after when present, inspect account and model state, and then investigate the provider path if you use Amazon Bedrock.
Start by identifying the failure class
Do not treat every failed request as a transient network problem. Anthropic returns errors in a predictable JSON envelope with a top-level error object containing a type and message. Official SDKs expose typed exceptions, so production code should catch those exception classes or inspect the structured response rather than matching human-readable message text.
| Signal | What it usually means | First action |
|---|---|---|
429, rate_limit_error, with retry-after |
A temporary request-rate or capacity limit | Honor the delay, then retry with capped exponential backoff and reduce concurrency. |
429 without retry-after, with spending-cap context |
An organization tier cap, monthly usage-tier spending cap, or Claude Code workspace spending limit | Stop blind retries and check usage, billing, and workspace limits. |
529, overloaded_error |
The Anthropic API is temporarily overloaded | Queue new work and retry with bounded exponential backoff plus jitter. |
500, api_error |
An unexpected internal API error | Retry with exponential backoff; preserve the request ID if it continues. |
504, timeout_error |
Processing exceeded the request timeout | Consider streaming long responses and review request size and workflow design. |
| Bedrock model, inference-profile, or payload error | A provider-path configuration or request-size issue | Use the required Bedrock inference profile and keep the request under 20 MB. |
| Deprecated or retired model ID | The selected model is less reliable or no longer supported | Migrate to Anthropic’s documented active replacement; retries do not fix lifecycle retirement. |
The distinction matters operationally. Retrying a temporary 429 or 529 can recover a request. Retrying a spending-cap 429 only creates more failed traffic and may amplify load in your own systems.

Capture enough context to diagnose the next failure
Before changing retry logic, make one failed request fully observable. Record these fields for every attempt:
- HTTP status code.
- Structured
error.typeanderror.message. - Anthropic
request_id. - Model ID and API endpoint.
- Attempt number and total elapsed time.
- Relevant request and token-usage counters.
- Whether the response included
retry-after, and the value received. - A redacted workload or tenant identifier so one noisy customer can be separated from another.
Never log API keys, full prompts, or personal data merely to debug throttling. Keep the request ID and the minimum metadata needed to correlate client logs, gateway logs, and Anthropic support records. If you use an official SDK, handle its typed error classes and retain the underlying status and response fields.
Apply the safe retry sequence
1. Retry only transient conditions
Retry a 529 overload and a transient 500. Retry a 429 only when it represents a temporary request-rate or capacity limit. A spending-cap 429 is a hard access condition until usage or account state changes; it is not a signal to keep polling.

For a 504, first decide whether the operation is safe to replay. A request that triggers an external side effect must have an application-level idempotency strategy before automatic replay. For purely generative work, replay may be acceptable, but your application should still prevent duplicate downstream writes.
2. Honor the server’s delay
When a retryable 429 includes retry-after, wait at least that long. Add a small random spread so many workers do not wake on the same millisecond. If no delay is supplied for a 529 or 500, use bounded exponential backoff with jitter rather than a fixed sleep.

A practical schedule is:
delay = min(max_delay, base_delay * 2 ** attempt) + random_jitter
Choose the base delay and maximum for your latency budget, cap the number of attempts, and send the request to a dead-letter or manual-review path after the cap. The exact numbers are an application policy, not an Anthropic guarantee. The important properties are increasing waits, a hard upper bound, randomness, and a clear terminal state.
3. Prevent synchronized retry storms
A process-local retry loop is not enough when several workers, containers, or services share an organization. Each process can appear below its local limit while the aggregate traffic repeatedly exceeds the account limit. Use a shared concurrency limiter or queue for all callers that use the same credentials and quota.
- Gate new requests with a distributed semaphore or queue.
- Limit both concurrent requests and queued work.
- Apply per-tenant or per-workload budgets when one customer can consume the entire pool.
- Use jitter on every retry, not just the first one.
- Stop admitting low-priority work when the queue reaches a defined age or size.
- Expose queue depth and oldest-item age as operational metrics.
4. Bound request size and token demand
Large token budgets increase service time and can make a burst harder to drain. Set a maximum output-token budget appropriate to each task instead of using one generous ceiling for every request. Trim unnecessary conversation history, summarize old turns, and split independent work into separately scheduled jobs. These controls reduce pressure before a request reaches the API; they do not bypass an account’s published quota.
5. Decide how to handle a failed attempt
Store the original job and its attempt metadata so a worker restart does not lose it. Mark an attempt as retryable, delayed, permanently rejected, or completed. If the request may have reached the provider before the connection failed, make replay behavior explicit: deduplicate by your own job ID, and do not assume that a client-side timeout proves the provider did not process the request.
Check organization, tier, and workspace limits
Anthropic’s limits vary by organization and usage tier. A number copied from another account, blog post, or environment is not evidence of your own allowance. In the Anthropic console, inspect current request and token consumption, the organization usage tier, the monthly spend cap, and any Claude Code workspace spending limit that applies to the credentials in use.

Use the timestamps in your logs to compare failures with usage counters. A temporary request-rate limit normally becomes eligible again after the server’s indicated delay. A spending-cap 429 continues until access resumes, so a worker that retries every few seconds can generate a large internal queue without changing the outcome. Alert on this pattern and route it to an account or billing owner instead of leaving it to an automated retry loop.
Keep separate credentials and budgets where your architecture requires isolation. For example, interactive development traffic should not silently consume the same operational budget as a production batch. Central accounting also makes it possible to attribute tokens and failures to a service or tenant.
Use a gateway when several services share Claude
Anthropic documents an API gateway as a way to centralize authentication, usage tracking, budgets, rate limits, audit logs, and model routing. A gateway is useful when independent services would otherwise implement slightly different throttles and retry rules.
| Control point | Client-only throttling | Central gateway |
|---|---|---|
| Scope of limit | Usually one process or service instance | Can enforce organization-wide, service, and tenant budgets |
| Observability | Scattered application logs | One place for usage, queueing, status codes, and request IDs |
| Auditability | Must be implemented in each caller | Central policy and audit records |
| Routing | Hard-coded in each application | Central model and endpoint routing rules |
| Failure risk | Each caller can create an independent retry storm | The gateway becomes a shared dependency that needs its own capacity and failover plan |
A gateway does not remove Anthropic’s limits. It makes admission control and accounting consistent before requests reach them. Protect the gateway itself with bounded queues, timeouts, health checks, and a documented behavior when its upstream is unavailable.
Anthropic’s gateway documentation presents LiteLLM as a third-party option and states that Anthropic does not endorse, maintain, or audit it. Treat any gateway as infrastructure that must pass your own security, privacy, logging, and operational review; verify how it handles credentials, prompt data, retries, and model routing before adoption.

Handle long requests and 504 timeouts
A 504 with timeout_error means processing timed out. For long responses, use Messages API streaming so the client can receive output incrementally instead of waiting for one large response to finish. Streaming does not make an overloaded service healthy and does not increase your quota; it addresses the time a client waits for a long operation.
Review the complete workflow when 504s recur:
- Reduce unnecessary context and output-token ceilings.
- Break a long multi-stage task into checkpoints that can resume.
- Set client, proxy, load-balancer, and worker timeouts consistently.
- Persist partial progress when your application can do so safely.
- Replay only operations that your application can deduplicate.
When you use Claude through Amazon Bedrock
Bedrock has a separate provider path, so a direct-Anthropic retry recipe cannot resolve every failure. Follow the model and inference-profile requirements for the Bedrock integration you selected. Choose global or regional endpoints according to availability and data-residency requirements, and verify that the model is actually available in the region and profile used by your request.
Keep the complete Bedrock request payload below 20 MB. Count the serialized request, not just the visible text in your prompt; attachments, encoded content, and wrapper fields contribute to the payload. A request-size failure requires reducing or relocating content, not increasing retry attempts.
| Question | Direct Anthropic API | Amazon Bedrock path |
|---|---|---|
| Endpoint and routing | Anthropic endpoint and its availability rules | Bedrock endpoint, region, and inference-profile rules |
| Authentication | Anthropic API credentials | AWS and Bedrock authentication and permissions |
| Availability choice | Anthropic service path | Global or regional selection, subject to Bedrock availability |
| Data residency | Determined by Anthropic’s service path | Influenced by the Bedrock region and endpoint choice |
| Payload constraint | Use the limits documented for the direct API | Bedrock request payload must remain under 20 MB |
| Model lifecycle | Use an active Anthropic model ID | Use the model and inference profile supported in the selected Bedrock path |
Check model lifecycle before changing retry logic
Anthropic states that deprecated models are likely to be less reliable than active models and publishes retirement dates and replacements. Confirm the exact model ID in the failing request, then compare it with the current active-model list. If the model is deprecated or retired, migrate to the documented replacement and validate prompt, output, and latency assumptions. More retries cannot restore a retired model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInclude the model ID in alerts and dashboards. A sudden rise in errors isolated to one model is a different incident from an organization-wide 529 surge, and the remediation is different.

Production implementation checklist
- Classify: Parse HTTP status and structured error type before deciding whether to retry.
- Record: Save request ID, model, endpoint, attempt, timing, and relevant usage counters with secrets and sensitive content redacted.
- Throttle: Enforce shared concurrency and queue limits across every service using the same quota.
- Back off: Honor
retry-after; otherwise use capped exponential backoff with jitter for transient 429, 500, and 529 cases. - Stop: Do not blindly retry a spending-cap 429, a payload-size error, or a retired model.
- Protect replay: Make idempotency and deduplication explicit before automatic retries.
- Control demand: Cap output tokens, trim context, and schedule bursts instead of releasing them simultaneously.
- Inspect account state: Check tier, monthly spend, workspace limits, and current consumption in the Anthropic console.
- Review the path: For Bedrock, verify region, inference profile, permissions, model availability, and the 20 MB payload limit.
- Escalate with evidence: If transient failures persist, provide request IDs, timestamps, status types, model IDs, and a summary of retry behavior.
Common symptoms and targeted fixes
Every worker retries forever on 429
Inspect whether the response lacks retry-after and whether usage or spending-cap context is present. If so, pause retries, surface the account condition, and let an operator restore access or adjust the applicable limit. If it is a temporary request-rate limit, centralize the delay and lower concurrency rather than letting each worker run its own loop.
529s arrive in a synchronized wave
Look for a scheduled batch, autoscaling event, or identical retry delay across workers. Add a shared queue, spread admissions over time, and randomize backoff. Keep the queue bounded so an upstream overload does not become an unbounded memory or cost problem.
Only long generations fail with 504
Stream the Messages API response, reduce avoidable context, cap output tokens, and align proxy and worker timeouts. Preserve resumable job state and deduplicate any replay.
Recommended Free Tools
A Bedrock request fails before model generation
Check the selected region and inference profile, confirm permissions and model availability, and measure the serialized payload. If it is at or above the 20 MB Bedrock maximum, reduce or externalize content before retrying.
One model fails while others work
Verify its lifecycle status and exact ID. A deprecated or retired model needs migration to Anthropic’s listed replacement, not a larger retry budget.
What a useful alert should say
An actionable alert identifies the status, structured error type, model, endpoint, affected service or tenant, first and last occurrence, request count, queue age, and whether retry-after was present. Add the organization usage tier and relevant consumption trend when account limits are suspected. This lets an operator distinguish an Anthropic-wide overload from one service’s burst, a workspace cap, a Bedrock configuration error, or a retired model ID without reproducing sensitive prompts.
