Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteShort answer: first determine whether Selenium is switching WebDriver context incorrectly or Chrome is actually taking focus from another desktop application. Save the original window handle, wait until the new handle exists, switch by excluding the original handle, and explicitly switch back after closing the tab. If the desktop itself still loses focus only with Chrome’s new headless mode, compare visible, legacy headless, and --headless=new in the same environment; no source establishes a universal ChromeDriver 110 fix for operating-system focus theft.
What the interruption can mean
“Switching tabs interrupts my PC” describes two different failures:
- Desktop focus loss: another application (an editor, terminal, or game) becomes inactive when Chrome starts, opens, or changes state. This is an operating-system or browser-window behavior, not a Selenium window-handle error.
- WebDriver context failure: Selenium remains attached to the old tab, switches before the new tab exists, or continues using a handle after its tab was closed. The visible desktop may look normal while commands target the wrong page or raise an exception.
ChromeDriver 110 and Chrome’s --headless=new flag appear in an anecdotal report of the first symptom. That report is one user’s environment, not evidence that every Chrome 110 installation is affected or that switch_to.window() causes focus stealing.
Record the environment before changing it
Write down the exact versions and launch arguments from the failing run. Include the operating system and whether Chrome is visible, legacy headless, or new headless. Keep Chrome and ChromeDriver compatible; the cited material does not identify a particular version pair that universally cures focus loss.

Also note whether the interruption occurs when Chrome starts, when a tab is opened, when Selenium switches handles, or when a tab is closed. That timeline separates browser-window focus from WebDriver timing.
Use Selenium’s handle pattern safely
Selenium treats each top-level tab or window as a window handle. A new tab can exist slightly after the click or script that requests it, so selecting a handle immediately is a race. The robust sequence is: save the original handle, wait for the expected count, calculate the handle that is not the original, switch to it, and switch back explicitly after closing it.
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.chrome.options import Options
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
options = Options()
# Choose one mode deliberately; remove this line for a visible run.
options.add_argument("--headless=new")
options.add_argument("--window-size=1280,900")
driver = webdriver.Chrome(options=options)
try:
driver.get("https://example.com")
original = driver.current_window_handle
# Replace this with the action that opens the second tab.
driver.execute_script("window.open('https://www.selenium.dev', '_blank');")
WebDriverWait(driver, 10).until(
lambda d: len(d.window_handles) == 2
)
new_handle = next(
handle for handle in driver.window_handles if handle != original
)
driver.switch_to.window(new_handle)
print(driver.title)
# Work in the new tab, then close it if appropriate.
driver.close()
driver.switch_to.window(original)
print(driver.current_url)
finally:
driver.quit()
The wait should match the expected number for your workflow. If several tabs can open, wait for the count to increase and identify the new handle by excluding the saved set of old handles rather than assuming an ordering. Handle strings are opaque; do not rely on “the second item” in window_handles.
Selenium’s window documentation shows the same save–wait–exclude–switch pattern and warns that closing a window does not restore the previous WebDriver context. Continuing after a close without switching back can leave commands aimed at a closed page and produce NoSuchWindowException. See Selenium’s window and tab guidance.

Save the handles before the click, perform the click, then wait until the set grows. This avoids a fixed sleep that is either too short on a busy machine or unnecessarily slow on a fast one.

WebDriverWait(driver, 10).until(
lambda d: len(set(d.window_handles) - before) == 1

driver.switch_to.window(new_handle)
JavaScript window.open
Use the same set-difference method after executing the script. If the site opens more than one tab, wait for the documented number and map each handle to a URL or title after switching.
Closing and returning
Never assume Selenium will return to the tab you used before. Keep the original handle in a variable, close the secondary tab, and call driver.switch_to.window(original) before the next command.
Check whether focus loss is actually occurring
- Run the test with Chrome visible (no headless argument) while another application is active. Record whether that application loses focus.
- Run with the legacy
--headlessargument if your Chrome/Selenium combination still supports it. - Run with
--headless=new. - Keep the test, profile, viewport, and operating-system session identical between runs. Change only the mode.
A difference between modes is useful local evidence, not a guaranteed fix. Selenium’s 2023 guidance explains that the convenience headless setting selected Chromium’s original implementation, deprecated that method in Selenium 4.8.0, and removed it in 4.10.0 so users could choose a mode with arguments. Chrome’s newer implementation is selected with --headless=new after Chrome 109. The mode flag changes browser behavior; it does not repair handle timing or prove anything about desktop focus.
If visible Chrome and legacy headless leave your other application alone but --headless=new does not, validate a different mode or an isolated execution environment against your requirements. For CI, a dedicated runner, container, or virtual machine prevents automation from competing with an interactive desktop, but it does not establish a ChromeDriver bug or make the original machine’s focus behavior safe.
Do not confuse the Chrome 110 viewport report with focus loss
Selenium issue #11706, filed February 24, 2023, reports that --window-size did not take effect with --headless=new in Chrome/ChromeDriver 110. Incorrect dimensions can break responsive layouts and make a run look different, but that issue is not evidence that the operating system is losing focus. Test viewport size independently:

If the values are wrong, investigate the version-specific sizing behavior, use a mode that meets your dimensions, or set the size through the supported driver API and verify the result. Do not present a viewport workaround as a focus fix.
Common symptoms, causes, and fixes
| Symptom | Likely layer | Action |
|---|---|---|
NoSuchWindowException after closing a tab |
WebDriver context | Switch explicitly to the saved surviving handle before issuing another command. |
| Intermittent failure immediately after opening a tab | Handle timing | Wait for the expected handle count and select by set difference; avoid a fixed sleep. |
| Another desktop application becomes inactive | OS/browser focus | Reproduce in visible, legacy headless, and new headless modes; isolate the run if necessary. Selenium waits cannot guarantee prevention of OS focus theft. |
| Page layout has the wrong dimensions | Viewport configuration | Measure WebDriver and JavaScript viewport sizes and investigate the Chrome 110 --window-size report separately. |
| New tab handle is selected but URL is not ready | Navigation timing | After switching, wait for a URL, title, or page-specific element rather than assuming navigation completed. |
| Failure appears only on one machine | Environment | Compare OS session, display server, remote desktop, profiles, extensions, and exact binaries; avoid claiming a universal browser fix. |
Make the test diagnosable and repeatable
Log handles and mode
print({
"handles": driver.window_handles,
"current": driver.current_window_handle,
"url": driver.current_url,
"title": driver.title,
"size": driver.get_window_size(),
})
Log immediately before opening a tab, after the handle-count wait, after switching, and after closing. Include timestamps so a slow tab creation is distinguishable from an incorrect selection.

Use a clean profile
Extensions, restored tabs, notification prompts, and an existing profile can create extra windows or alter startup focus. Use a temporary profile for reproduction and remove unrelated extensions. This is a diagnostic control, not proof that a profile is the root cause.
Keep operations serialized
Do not let multiple threads mutate one WebDriver session while another thread is opening or closing windows. If parallel tests are required, give each test its own driver and profile. A handle wait cannot make concurrent mutations deterministic.
Capture enough failure data
At failure, save the exception, handle list, current handle, URL, title, viewport values, Chrome/driver/Selenium versions, and launch arguments. For desktop focus, record which application became active and the exact action that preceded it. This evidence lets you distinguish a reproducible mode-specific problem from a timing coincidence.

When changing headless mode is the right workaround
Use a different mode only after confirming the symptom and checking what your job needs. Visible mode may be required when you must interact with a desktop session; headless mode is preferable for an isolated CI job; legacy headless may be unavailable or unsuitable with newer Selenium releases; new headless may provide the browser behavior you need but still reproduce the local focus interruption. Validate downloads, rendering, authentication, viewport dimensions, and performance in the selected mode. Do not promise that upgrading or downgrading ChromeDriver alone cures this report, because the available evidence does not establish such a version-specific remedy.

Is --headless=new a fix for ChromeDriver 110?
No. It selects Chrome’s newer headless implementation. It does not address handle timing or provide a confirmed fix for focus interruption.
What should I do if several tabs open?
Save the original handle set, wait for the expected count, compute the new-handle set difference, and identify each handle by URL, title, or a page-specific element after switching.
Why did closing a tab break the next command?
Closing does not restore the prior WebDriver context. Switch to a surviving saved handle immediately after the close.

The Bottom Line
Wait for handles, switch by identity, and explicitly return after closing. Treat desktop focus interruption, handle timing, and viewport sizing as separate investigations; choose a different headless mode or an isolated environment only after reproducing the behavior in your own versions and operating system.
