Start with the fix that matches your Castlevania release. For Castlevania Dominus Collection: Belmont’s Curse, a launch failure caused by V-Sync being off and FPS set to Unlimited is addressed by temporarily setting the Windows monitor refresh rate below 60 Hz, enabling V-Sync from the title-screen Settings menu, closing the game, and then restoring the monitor refresh rate. For controller detection, use an XInput-compatible pad, test Steam Input both on and off, select the game’s official layout when available, and remove duplicate virtual controllers. On Linux or Steam Deck, update Steam and Proton before changing files; Valve’s Proton 7.0-1 changelog specifically records a quick-save fix for Castlevania Advance Collection.
Save failures have release-specific causes. KONAMI documents a language-sensitive title-screen problem affecting some players, mainly those using Arabic, and advises changing the system language to another supported language such as English. In Dominus Collection, saves are separate for each regional version, so changing regions can make an existing save appear to disappear. Back up local saves before deleting or replacing anything.
Identify the release and runtime before changing anything
“Castlevania on PC” is not one technical target. Belmont’s Curse, Dominus Collection, Lords of Shadow – Ultimate Edition, and Advance Collection have different support notes, input paths, and save behavior. The first step is to identify the exact game shown in your Steam library, then note whether it runs through native Windows Steam or through Proton on Linux or Steam Deck.

Keep the original environment in mind while troubleshooting. A pad that works in another game may still present as DirectInput rather than XInput; a save that exists on disk may belong to another regional executable; and a frame-pacing problem can be caused by the display mode, overlay, driver, or compatibility layer rather than the game itself.

Fix Belmont’s Curse failing to launch or playing incorrectly with Unlimited FPS
KONAMI’s documented sequence is the highest-confidence fix for Belmont’s Curse when V-Sync is disabled and FPS is set to Unlimited. Perform the steps in this order rather than changing several graphics settings at once.
- Lower the Windows display refresh rate. Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. Select the monitor used for the game and temporarily choose a refresh rate below 60 Hz. The notice does not specify one universal value, so select a lower option that your display offers.
- Launch the game. Start Belmont’s Curse after applying the temporary refresh-rate setting.
- Open Settings from the title screen. Do not rely on an in-game pause menu; the documented path begins at the title screen.
- Turn V-Sync on. Change the V-Sync option to enabled. If FPS is set to Unlimited, leave the title-screen settings only after V-Sync is enabled.
- Close the game completely. Exit to Windows so the setting is written and the game process is no longer running.
- Restore the monitor refresh rate. Return to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and select your normal refresh rate.
- Launch again and test. KONAMI says the game should then launch and play normally after this sequence.
If the game still fails after the sequence, keep V-Sync enabled while testing. The notice addresses this particular V-Sync/Unlimited-FPS launch condition; it does not establish that every crash, black screen, or stutter has the same cause. Avoid stacking a driver rollback, frame limiter, overlay change, and configuration-file edit before confirming whether this release-specific fix worked.
Make a Castlevania controller work on Windows
Use an XInput-compatible controller first
The clearest documented compatibility target is XInput. Steam’s support page for Lords of Shadow – Ultimate Edition lists “Keyboard or Xinput compatible Joypad for control.” A controller that exposes only DirectInput may not be recognized correctly, may map buttons incorrectly, or may appear to work in menus but fail in gameplay.

- If the pad has an XInput/DInput switch, select XInput before launching Steam or the game.
- For wireless devices, verify that the operating system sees one active gamepad and that the receiver or Bluetooth connection is stable.
- Disconnect extra pads, fight sticks, wheels, remappers, and virtual-controller devices while testing. Duplicate devices can cause the game to read the wrong player slot or create doubled button presses.
Test Steam Input in both states
Steam Input can translate a nonstandard controller into a layout the game understands, but a game that already handles XInput natively can behave differently when an additional translation layer is active. Test one state at a time:

- Open Steam Library, right-click the Castlevania game, choose Properties, and open Controller.
- Set the per-game Steam Input option to Enable Steam Input and launch the game. Check the controller in the title screen and in gameplay.
- If input is missing, duplicated, or incorrectly mapped, return to the same menu and set Steam Input to Disable Steam Input. Relaunch and test the physical XInput device directly.
- If the game offers an official controller layout in Steam’s controller-config screen, select that layout before creating a custom mapping.
- After each change, close and relaunch the game. Changing a mapping while the game is running does not prove that the game has re-enumerated its devices.
These are diagnostic steps based on the documented XInput requirement and platform controller behavior, not guarantees for every Castlevania release. If neither Steam Input state works, test with one known-good XInput pad and no virtual-controller software. That isolates the game from a crowded input stack.
When menus work but gameplay does not
Check whether the game is receiving keyboard input while the controller is ignored. If keyboard controls work, the game process is running and the remaining fault is likely device detection, mapping, or focus. Click the game window once, remove duplicate devices, and retest with a single XInput pad. If the controller works in Steam’s controller test but not in the game, compare Steam Input enabled versus disabled rather than repeatedly reinstalling the game.
When buttons are doubled or the wrong player moves
Two input layers often produce this symptom: the physical XInput device and a virtual copy exposed by a remapper or Steam Input. Unplug or disable the extra device, restart Steam, and test again. Do not create a second custom layout until the game sees only one controller.

Apply the verified Belmont’s Curse display fix first
For Belmont’s Curse, complete the below-60-Hz, title-screen V-Sync sequence before experimenting with graphics drivers, overlays, or external frame-limit tools. It is the only cited official display-specific procedure for this problem.

Use controlled diagnostic experiments for other releases
The cited official pages do not publish a universal stutter fix for every Castlevania PC release. You can still isolate common causes, but label each change as an experiment and revert it if it has no effect:
- Frame limit: If the game offers a finite frame-rate option, test it instead of Unlimited. Record whether the hitching changes, then keep the setting only if it improves consistency.
- Display mode: Compare fullscreen and borderless windowed mode. Test one mode for several minutes in the same area before switching.
- Overlays: Temporarily disable Steam’s overlay and other capture, monitoring, or chat overlays. Overlay removal is a diagnostic step, not a documented Castlevania-specific cure.
- Background load: Close recording tools, browser video, and other software that can compete for GPU time. Re-enable them one at a time after testing.
- Driver and shader changes: Do not begin by deleting driver caches or rolling back drivers. Those actions can create new variables and are not established by the cited Castlevania notices.
Separate a frame-rate problem from a frame-pacing problem. A high counter does not rule out uneven delivery: watch for regular hitches when scrolling, entering a new room, or opening a menu. Note the display refresh rate, V-Sync state, frame-limit state, and whether the game is native Windows or Proton when reporting the issue.
What Proton’s changelog does and does not prove
Valve’s Proton changelog includes platform-wide controller work and historical stuttering-cursor fixes. Those entries describe improvements to Proton as a compatibility layer; they are not a promise that every Castlevania title will stop stuttering on a particular Proton build. Use them to justify updating Proton, not to claim a universal game-specific fix.
Recover Castlevania saves that will not load
Language-sensitive title-screen problem in Belmont’s Curse
KONAMI documents a problem in which players using certain system languages, mainly Arabic, may be unable to pass the title page after saving and quitting. Its stated workaround is to change the system language to another supported language, such as English. KONAMI also says a patch is being created; the notice does not establish the release date or current availability of that patch.

- Close the game.
- Change the operating-system language to another supported language, such as English. On Windows, use Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Sign out or restart Windows if it requests that step so the language change is applied to the game process.
- Launch Belmont’s Curse and try to continue from the existing save.
- After confirming the save loads, decide whether to keep the supported language while waiting for an official patch or notice that changes the workaround.
Changing the language is a workaround for the documented title-screen condition. It is not a reason to delete the save, and deleting files before trying it can remove the only recoverable copy.
Regional saves in Dominus Collection
Castlevania Dominus Collection stores save data separately for each regional version. If you switch from one regional version to another, an existing save can appear missing even though the original data remains associated with the first version. Before assuming corruption:
- Launch the same regional version that created the save.
- Undo any recent region selection or executable change and test the original version.
- Do not overwrite a working save with a newly created save from the other region.
- Install the Steam update dated 2025-10-23, which KONAMI’s page describes as improving stability and fixing bugs.
The collection supports rewind and quick saves, but those features do not merge regional save files. Treat each regional version as its own save environment.
Advance Collection quick-save problems on Proton
Valve’s Proton 7.0-1 changelog explicitly records “Fix quick save in Castlevania Advance Collection.” If quick save fails on Linux or Steam Deck, update Steam and Proton before editing game files. Proton versions can change controller and save behavior, so record the version that worked before moving to another build.

- Update Steam through the client and restart it.
- Open the game’s Properties and select the compatibility settings.
- Install or select a current Proton version available in your Steam installation; if you are troubleshooting a historical quick-save issue, test Proton 7.0-1 or a newer build rather than an older build.
- Launch the game and create a test quick save in a safe slot.
- Exit normally, relaunch, and verify that the test save loads before relying on it for progress.
The changelog entry confirms a fix in Proton 7.0-1; it does not establish that every later Proton version behaves identically for every system. If a newer build introduces a regression, compare it with the last known-good build and report the exact Proton version.

Save deletion is a documented Steam support topic, but Steam does not provide one universal save-folder path for every Castlevania release. Folder names and locations can vary by game, operating system, compatibility layer, and whether the game uses Steam Cloud.
- Exit the game and Steam if possible so no process is writing the save.
- Use Steam’s game properties to identify the installed files and any documented user-data location. Do not assume that the installation directory contains the save.
- Copy the entire suspected save folder to a separate location, keeping the original folder structure and file names.
- If Steam Cloud is enabled, make a second backup before deleting anything. Cloud synchronization can restore or overwrite files after a restart.
- Only after the backup, test a rename of the suspected folder rather than permanent deletion. Renaming lets you restore the original data if the diagnosis is wrong.
- Launch the game and test. If the new folder fixes the problem, close the game and compare the backup with the newly created files before attempting any selective replacement.
Never replace a save from one regional version with a save from another and expect the collection to import it. For language-related title-screen failures, try the documented language workaround before touching local files.

What to include when asking for support
A useful report identifies the exact release and the conditions that reproduce the fault. Include:
- The full game title and, for Dominus Collection, the regional version.
- Windows or Linux/Steam Deck, plus the Proton version if applicable.
- Controller model and whether it exposes XInput.
- Steam Input state: enabled, disabled, or the game’s official layout.
- Display refresh rate, V-Sync state, and whether FPS is Unlimited.
- System language and whether the save was created before a language or region change.
- Whether Steam Cloud is enabled and whether a local backup exists.
- The exact symptom: no detection, wrong mapping, hitching, title-screen lock, missing save, or quick-save failure.
This information prevents unrelated fixes from being mixed together. A controller problem on native Windows, a quick-save problem under Proton, and a missing regional save in Dominus Collection require different tests even if each is described as “Castlevania not working.”
Bottom line
Use the release-specific path: the below-60-Hz and V-Sync sequence for Belmont’s Curse; an XInput pad plus Steam Input A/B testing for controller failures; Steam and Proton updates for Linux or Steam Deck; the system-language workaround for the documented title-screen save issue; and the original regional version for Dominus Collection saves.
