Start by letting Steam install the latest update for Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse. Version 1.1.3, recorded on October 16, 2026, addresses a black screen and launch failure on high-refresh-rate monitors, although the patch note warns that some environments can still be affected. If the game still will not start, use KONAMI’s documented workaround: temporarily set the Windows display refresh rate below 60 Hz, launch the game, turn V-Sync on under Video Settings, close the game, and restore your normal refresh rate.
That procedure targets one specific failure condition: V-Sync turned off while FPS is set to Unlimited. Other symptoms have different causes. A title screen that stops responding after you save is associated mainly with certain system languages, including Arabic; Steam Deck users can encounter UI elements positioned partly off-screen; and PCs below the Steam listing’s requirements may fail independently of the display-timing problem.
Identify the symptom before changing settings
Use the symptom that best matches what you see. Applying the wrong fix can change settings without addressing the underlying issue.

Install the latest patch first
Do not begin by deleting settings or repeatedly changing display modes. In Steam, allow the game to finish downloading and installing any pending update before testing it again. SteamDB records version 1.1.3 on October 16, 2026, with the note: “We have released an update to address an issue where the game may fail to launch and a black screen shows for High Refresh Rate Monitors.” The same note cautions that the problem “may still occur in certain environments.”

The update changes the starting point for every other troubleshooting step. If the game starts after updating, you do not need to use the temporary refresh-rate change. If it does not, continue with the official procedure below rather than assuming that the patch failed; the publisher describes the update as an improvement, not a guarantee for every hardware and display combination.
Use KONAMI’s V-Sync workaround for a black screen or launch failure
KONAMI’s notice identifies a precise trigger: “Game may fail to launch when V-Sync is turned OFF and FPS is set to Unlimited.” The following sequence is designed to get into the game long enough to change V-Sync. It is not a universal cure for every crash, freeze, or title-screen problem.
- Lower the Windows monitor refresh rate. Open Windows display settings, select the monitor you use for the game, and temporarily choose a refresh rate below 60 Hz. This is a temporary boot measure, not a recommendation to run your monitor permanently at that rate.
- Launch the game while the lower rate is active. If the first attempt does not open, confirm that the selected display is still below 60 Hz and try again. The documented condition concerns display timing, so changing unrelated graphics options first will not test this specific workaround.
- Open Settings from the title screen. Select Settings, then open Video Settings.
- Turn V-Sync on. Change the V-Sync setting to ON. The notice specifically calls out the combination of V-Sync OFF and FPS Unlimited, so do not leave that combination in place while diagnosing this launch problem.
- Close the game normally. Exit after saving the video-setting change so it can be written to the game’s configuration.
- Restore your normal refresh rate. Return Windows to the monitor’s original refresh-rate setting.
- Launch again. KONAMI states that the game should now launch and play normally. If it still fails after multiple attempts with this sequence, move to the requirements and symptom-specific checks below, then contact Customer Support.
What this workaround does—and does not do
The refresh-rate change is a way to reach the Video Settings screen under a safer timing configuration. It does not prove that every crash is caused by V-Sync, and it does not address a language lock after saving or a Steam Deck layout problem. Once V-Sync is enabled and the original refresh rate is restored, you can test the game at your normal display setting. If you later turn V-Sync off and set FPS to Unlimited, you are reintroducing the exact combination KONAMI warns about.

Check whether the PC meets the Steam listing
A launch failure can be unrelated to the high-refresh-rate defect if the computer is below the published baseline. Steam’s current listing, accessed October 19, 2026, specifies Windows 11 and a 64-bit processor and operating system for both minimum and recommended configurations.

These are the listing’s stated requirements, not a promise that a system meeting them cannot encounter the documented bug. Conversely, if the computer uses an older Windows release, has less than 16 GB of memory, lacks the listed class of graphics hardware, or cannot provide 10 GB of storage, resolve that mismatch before treating the problem as a patch-specific crash. The listing does not provide a separate lower specification for Steam Deck.
Fix a title-page lock caused by system language
KONAMI reports that players using certain system languages—Arabic is the main example—may be unable to get past the title page after saving and quitting back to it. This symptom is different from a black screen during launch: the game has reached the title page, but progression stops after a saved session is closed.

- Close the game completely.
- Open Windows’ language settings and select a supported system language, such as English. Change the operating-system language rather than only the in-game text option if the game does not provide one.
- Restart Windows if it requests a restart, then launch the game again.
- Test the saved session from the title page. Keep the language change in place while waiting for KONAMI’s compatibility patch if returning to the original language reproduces the lock.
KONAMI says it is currently creating a patch to fix these language-related issues. Changing the system language is therefore a temporary compatibility measure, not evidence that the save itself is damaged. If you need to preserve the original language for other software, change it only while playing and restore it afterward; the language setting is reversible, but the title-page symptom can return when the unsupported configuration is restored.
Understand the Steam Deck UI clipping issue
Some Steam Deck players see interface elements partially off-screen. KONAMI has acknowledged these cases and says it is investigating a fix. This is a layout or scaling problem, not the Windows launch failure covered by the below-60-Hz procedure. The Windows workaround cannot correct a Deck screen whose menus are positioned outside the visible area.
Install the current game update before judging the behavior, then record which menus or controls are clipped and whether the problem occurs in handheld mode, docked mode, or both. Do not delete saves or repeatedly change Windows monitor settings for this symptom. If the updated game remains difficult to operate, report the details to KONAMI Customer Support so they can associate the display configuration with the open investigation.

A settings reset can remove the configuration that is preventing startup, but changing files can also disrupt local preferences and, depending on what is stored in the directory, affect access to saves.

- Exit the game and Steam before touching the directory.
- Copy the entire folder to a separate location before deleting or resetting anything. This gives you a rollback if the change does not help.
- Use the discussion’s reset method conservatively; do not remove files you cannot restore.
- Launch the game and test. If the reset makes no difference, restore the backup rather than stacking additional untracked changes.
Because this approach is not an official fix, describe exactly what you changed if you contact support. Include whether version 1.1.3 was installed and whether the V-Sync workaround had already been completed.

When to contact KONAMI Customer Support
Contact KONAMI Customer Support if the game still fails to launch after multiple attempts with the official refresh-rate and V-Sync sequence. SteamDB repeats this direction alongside the version 1.1.3 note, which acknowledges that some environments may still fail after the update.
Make the report actionable by including the symptom, whether the screen is black or the title page is stuck, your monitor’s normal and temporary refresh rates, whether V-Sync was previously off with FPS set to Unlimited, confirmation that version 1.1.3 is installed, your Windows version, and whether the PC meets the Steam requirements. For a language lock, name the system language in use. For Steam Deck clipping, identify the affected UI elements and whether the Deck is handheld or docked. If you used the community settings directory, state which files were reset and whether you restored a backup.
