For most modern Windows PCs, the reliable order is: apply Rockstar’s official PC patch 1.200, install SilentPatchBully in the folder containing Bully.exe, leave the frame-rate limit at 30 FPS while testing, and only then try Rockstar’s legacy memory workaround. This sequence addresses the game’s old streaming and memory assumptions without changing Windows boot settings before you have a clean baseline.
What to do first
Make a backup of your save files and note whether your copy is the Steam release or another authorized PC edition. Keep the original game folder untouched long enough to reproduce the problem once; that gives you a rollback point if a mod or configuration change introduces a new failure.
- Install Rockstar Games Customer Support’s language-matched PC patch 1.200. Rockstar identifies it as the latest PC patch and describes a compatibility fix for streaming performance plus random lockups and crashes on 64-bit Windows systems with more than 2 GB of RAM. The download is about 15 MB.
- Launch the patched, unmodded game once. Do not add script, texture, widescreen, or trainer modifications during this baseline test.
- Install the current SilentPatchBully release by copying its files into the directory that contains
Bully.exe. Preserve the clean backup before replacing or adding files. - Use the default 30 FPS behavior while diagnosing. SilentPatch’s limiter is more precise than the stock limiter; changing the cap later makes it easier to tell whether timing is involved.
- Repeat the action that caused the crash and record the exact point: startup, the initial load, a named mission, loading a save, or after extended play.

Why the old PC version crashes
Bully: Scholarship Edition was built around a legacy memory manager, streaming system, audio code, and timing assumptions. Rockstar patch 1.200: install this before mods
What the patch changes
Rockstar’s 2026 support page calls version 1.200 the latest PC patch. Its stated change is: “Compatibility fix that will improve streaming performance, as well as a fix for random lock ups and crashes affecting 64-bit Windows with over 2 GB of RAM.” That makes it the correct starting point for crashes that occur while entering areas, loading assets, or appearing random on a modern 64-bit installation.
Installation procedure
- Close the game and its launcher.
- Obtain the patch from Rockstar Games Customer Support, choosing the language that matches your installed edition.
- Run the patch installer and point it at the existing Bully: Scholarship Edition directory if it does not detect it automatically.
- Allow the installer to finish without replacing the folder with a second copy of the game.
- Start the game once with no additional files installed. A successful launch establishes that the official update is in place before community fixes are introduced.
The patch download is approximately 15 MB according to Rockstar’s support page. That size is an indication of a small update, not a complete reinstallation; it should be applied to an existing authorized PC copy.
SilentPatchBully: the community engine fix

The project describes its goal as fixing Bully’s memory management so behavior is less dependent on the Windows version. This complements rather than replaces patch 1.200: the Rockstar update handles the official compatibility issue, while SilentPatch covers additional legacy-engine failure paths.
How to install it safely
- Make a copy of the clean, patched game directory or at least preserve the original files that will be replaced.
- Download a release from the SilentPatchBully project’s official GitHub page. Avoid repacked archives from download mirrors.
- Extract the release contents directly into the folder containing
Bully.exe. Do not place them in a parent folder, the desktop, or a separate “mods” directory unless the release instructions explicitly require that layout. - Leave script and texture modifications disabled for the first test. SilentPatch’s maintainers ask for an unmodded game when diagnosing issues because other files can change the crash.
- Start the game and keep the limiter at its default 30 FPS during reproduction.
SilentPatchBully is explicitly a public beta. Its documentation warns that crashes may still occur, so installation is a troubleshooting measure, not a guarantee of stability. If it makes the game less stable, remove its files or restore the clean backup and retest the official patch alone.
Keep testing at 30 FPS first
The stock game defaults to 30 FPS, and SilentPatch documents a more precise limiter. A higher cap can alter physics, animation timing, streaming cadence, or the amount of work performed between engine updates. That does not prove a high frame rate caused a particular crash, but it can make a timing-sensitive failure harder to isolate.

Use the default cap while testing startup, loading, missions, and extended play. Once the unmodded, patched game is stable, raise the limit in SilentPatchBully.ini one change at a time and repeat the same scenario. If the crash returns only after a cap change, revert that setting before trying another modification.
Rockstar’s Maximum Memory workaround
What it does
Rockstar’s separate crash article documents an older workaround for systems where the game fails despite the patch. It limits the amount of memory Windows makes available at boot, reducing the memory range visible to the legacy process. Rockstar recommends setting Maximum memory below 2000 MB, with 1500 MB as a starting point, then restarting and ensuring patch 1.200 is installed.
Exact Windows steps
- Press
Win+R, typemsconfig, and press Enter. - Open the Boot tab and select Advanced options.
- Enable Maximum memory and enter a value below
2000MB; Rockstar’s article gives1500MB as a starting point. - Accept the dialogs and restart Windows.
- Test the game with patch 1.200 installed and without extra mods.
This advice was written for an older Windows configuration and is not a universal requirement for Windows 10 or Windows 11. Record the original state before changing it. To undo the experiment, return to msconfig, open Boot and Advanced options, clear Maximum memory (or restore the previous value), apply the change, and restart. Do not leave an unnecessarily low limit in place if it does not improve the crash.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 compatibility
Windows 10 baseline
Steam’s listing gives Windows 10 and DirectX 9.0c as baseline requirements. Those requirements describe the supported software environment; they do not ensure that every combination of drivers, overlays, save files, or modifications will be stable. Apply patch 1.200 and test without mods before investigating those variables.
Windows 11 is not guaranteed
Community reports are mixed. Some players report successful Windows 11 sessions after setting CustomMemoryMgr = 1 in the SilentPatch configuration, while others continue to experience crashes. This setting is an anecdotal workaround, not an official Windows 11 compatibility guarantee.
If you try it, change only that line, keep a copy of the original SilentPatchBully.ini, and reproduce the same scenario used for the baseline. If there is no improvement, revert the line rather than combining it with the Maximum Memory boot limit immediately. A result that works on one Windows 11 installation cannot establish a universal fix.

Match the remedy to the crash point
Crash before the main menu
- Verify patch 1.200 is applied to the correct language and game folder.
- Remove script, graphics, and overlay modifications for the test.
- Install SilentPatchBully in the directory containing
Bully.exe. - Keep the frame-rate cap at 30 FPS.
If the clean patched copy still exits before the menu, test the documented Maximum Memory procedure and retain the original boot setting for rollback.
Crash during the first load or while entering an area
These symptoms fit the streaming and collision-loading classes addressed by patch 1.200 and SilentPatchBully. Reproduce the same transition after each change. A crash that moves to a different location after installing unrelated mods should be diagnosed with those mods removed before changing Windows settings.
Crash in Nutcrackin’ or Music Class
SilentPatchBully specifically lists startup fixes for both of these classes. Use the patched, unmodded installation with the 30 FPS cap, then retry the class. If the mission still fails, document whether it fails on a new game and on an existing save; that distinction helps separate a repeatable engine path from a damaged save.

First test a different save or a newly started game with the same files. If only one save fails, preserve it and avoid overwriting your backup while troubleshooting. If every save fails, return to the clean patch-plus-SilentPatch baseline and then test the legacy memory workaround.
Crash after extended play or during audio-heavy scenes
SilentPatch documents audio-handle and audio-memory leak fixes, as well as a sound-streaming use-after-free fix. Let the game run through the same extended session after installation and note whether the time-to-crash changes. Do not treat a longer session as proof of a complete fix; continue testing the original trigger.
Use crash dumps to report a reproducible failure
SilentPatch’s MiniDumper can write a .dmp file to the game directory after a crash. Keep that file instead of deleting it during cleanup. Write down the Windows version, whether the copy is Steam or another authorized build, the installed patch and SilentPatch versions, the FPS cap, the exact mission or transition, and whether script or texture mods were present.

For a useful report, reproduce the failure with an unmodded game. Include the shortest sequence that triggers it, such as “load save slot 2, enter the gym, start Music Class.” A dump without a reproduction description is harder to interpret, while a description made after adding several mods cannot show which component failed.

Apply the official patch first because it is the supported baseline. Add SilentPatch when legacy-engine failures remain or when you need its frame-pacing and diagnostic behavior. Keep a clean backup so either layer can be removed without reinstalling the entire game.
Reversible testing and installation checks
Think of every change as an experiment with one variable. Keep one folder or archive representing the patched, unmodded game, and keep saves in a separate backup. After installing SilentPatch, check that its files are beside Bully.exe rather than buried one level deeper in an extracted folder. - Testing at an unlocked or very high frame rate before confirming stability at 30 FPS.
- Leaving Windows’ Maximum memory limit enabled after an unsuccessful experiment.

When to stop changing settings
