Start by watching a different channel and, if possible, testing another network. If every stream pauses, the cause is usually your connection, router, device, or browser. If only one channel fails, the broadcaster’s bitrate, encoder, resolution, frame rate, keyframe settings, or upload path is more likely at fault. Refreshing the player, lowering quality, and checking for browser or decoding conflicts solve most viewer-side problems.
Use the sequence below in order: identify whether the fault is local or stream-specific, stabilize the connection, reduce playback demand, remove browser conflicts, then address video decoding and latency settings.
First, identify what kind of problem you have
Do not change several settings at once. A quick comparison tells you where to concentrate effort.
Test another channel or livestream
Open two or three unrelated streams on the same service. If the others play normally, your device and connection are probably capable of playback. A problem confined to one channel can come from that broadcaster’s encoder, bitrate, frame rate, resolution, keyframe interval, or upload connection. Refresh once, then report the issue to the streamer if it persists.

Test another network
Switch from Wi‑Fi to cellular data, Ethernet, or a different Wi‑Fi network. If playback improves immediately, investigate your home network rather than the streaming service. If the same symptoms follow the device across networks, examine the browser, app, graphics driver, or device load.
Match the symptom to the likely cause
| Symptom | Most likely area | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| Repeated pauses on every service | Unstable Wi‑Fi, congestion, router or ISP trouble, or insufficient sustained download capacity | Try Ethernet or another network, restart the modem/router, and lower stream quality |
| Audio continues while video freezes | Browser or GPU decoding, hardware acceleration, extensions, or heavy device load | Try a private window, then update the browser and graphics driver and test hardware acceleration |
| Audio and video drift after a stall | Playback recovery, browser decoding, or a stream-specific timing problem | Refresh playback, test another browser/device, and disable extensions |
| Only one channel is poor | Broadcaster bitrate, encoder, resolution, frame rate, keyframes, or upload path | Compare other channels before changing your setup |
| Video is consistently behind real time without pauses | Intentional live latency or a large read-ahead buffer | Check the service’s latency mode and decide whether responsiveness or stability matters more |
Fix your connection and home network
Use the most stable connection available
Wi‑Fi can lose packets or vary in throughput even when a speed test looks fast. For a computer or television near the router, connect by Ethernet. A Cat6 cable is suitable for this troubleshooting step; the important improvement is the wired path, not a particular cable brand.
If Ethernet is not practical, move closer to the access point, use the less-congested Wi‑Fi band offered by your router, and avoid placing the router behind a television, inside a cabinet, or beside large appliances. Pause cloud backups, game downloads, video calls, and other high-bandwidth activity while testing.

- Close the livestream and stop large downloads on all devices.
- Unplug the modem and router (or the single gateway supplied by your ISP).
- Wait about 30 seconds, reconnect the modem first, and allow its status lights to stabilize.
- Reconnect the router, wait for Wi‑Fi to return, and test the same stream again.
A restart clears transient state; it does not repair an inadequate service tier, damaged cable, or persistent interference. If playback remains poor on Ethernet and on another device, contact your ISP and describe the sustained download and stability problem rather than only quoting a peak speed-test result.
Check sustained capacity, not just a speed-test peak
Live video needs a continuous flow. Short bursts at the advertised connection rate do not help if throughput collapses every few seconds or packets are lost. Other household traffic, evening congestion, and a weak wireless signal can all reduce the usable margin.

Twitch’s current viewing guidance gives these approximate download ranges. They are recommendations, not guarantees; congestion, packet loss, and service-side conditions still matter.
| Playback target | Approximate sustained download guidance | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 360p | 0.7–1.5 Mbps | Twitch current guidance; lower resolution reduces demand but cannot compensate for an unstable link |
| 480p | 1.1–3 Mbps | Twitch current guidance |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3–6 Mbps | Twitch current guidance; 60 frames per second requires more data than the same resolution at a lower frame rate |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 7–12 Mbps | Twitch current guidance |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 9–18 Mbps or higher | Twitch current guidance; high-resolution streams need greater and steadier headroom |
Leave margin above the relevant range for other traffic and normal variation. If the stream still buffers at a lower setting, the issue is more likely stability, congestion, decoding, or the broadcaster’s feed than raw resolution alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesLower the player’s workload
Use Auto first, then choose a lower quality
Open the player’s quality menu and select Auto. Adaptive playback can move to a lower rendition when conditions change. If Auto continues to oscillate or pause, select a fixed lower resolution temporarily—for example, move from 1080p60 to 720p60 or 480p.
Lowering quality is a diagnostic as well as a workaround. If a lower rendition plays continuously, your connection or device is close to the original stream’s limit. If even the lowest available rendition pauses, continue with network and browser checks.
Refresh cleanly
- Use the player’s reload or refresh control.
- If the page is unresponsive, close the tab or app completely and reopen it.
- Sign in again only if the service requires it; avoid repeatedly opening many copies of the same stream.
- Restart the device if playback remains stuck after a clean reload.
A refresh discards a damaged playback buffer and requests a new stream segment. It will not fix an encoder that is sending invalid or excessively demanding media, so compare another channel if the fault returns immediately.

Update the browser or app
Install the current stable version of your browser or streaming app, then restart it. YouTube recommends changing the internet connection and trying either the YouTube app or youtube.com when playback is faulty. Keeping both the app and operating system current also ensures that supported video decoders and media formats are available.
Remove browser conflicts
Use a private or incognito window
Open a private window, sign in if necessary, and play the stream there. Private mode normally starts with extensions disabled and a clean session. If playback works in that window, an extension, cached data, or a site permission is interfering.
Disable extensions selectively
- Close the stream.
- Disable ad blockers, script filters, privacy tools, video-download helpers, and other media-related extensions.
- Reopen the stream after each change so you can identify the conflicting extension.
- Re-enable unrelated extensions once the cause is known.
Twitch identifies extensions as a possible cause of unsupported playback and network error 2000. Do not assume an extension is harmless because other websites work; streaming players use different scripts, media requests, and permissions.
Clear only the affected site’s data
If private mode works but your normal window does not, clear cached files and site data for the affected service, then sign in again. This is less disruptive than deleting all browser history. A stale player script or corrupted media cache can survive ordinary page refreshes.
Fix Twitch network error 2000
Error 2000 generally indicates that the player cannot obtain or continue the stream correctly. Work through these checks:

- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
- Refresh the page and compare another channel.
- Open the channel in a private window.
- Disable extensions, especially ad and script blockers, and retry.
- Switch between Wi‑Fi, Ethernet, and cellular data where available.
- Restart the app or browser and install its latest update.
- Select Auto or a lower quality to reduce demand.
If every channel fails on one network but works elsewhere, the network path or ISP is the leading suspect. If only one channel returns the error, the broadcaster’s stream configuration may be responsible.
Fix Twitch error 3000 and video that freezes while audio continues
Error 3000 and the “audio keeps playing while video stops” pattern often point to video decoding rather than download speed. The browser may be receiving audio successfully while the graphics pipeline cannot decode or render video reliably.
- Update the browser to its current stable release.
- Update the device’s GPU or graphics driver from the computer manufacturer or graphics-chip vendor.
- In the browser’s performance or system settings, turn hardware acceleration off.
- Fully quit and restart the browser; a tab refresh alone may not reload the decoder.
- Test the stream again, then compare another browser or device.
Hardware acceleration can improve efficiency on a healthy graphics stack, but an incompatible driver or GPU path can cause stutter and desynchronization. If disabling it fixes playback, leave it off while you update the driver, then test again; either setting may be more reliable depending on the device.
Close demanding games, video editors, virtual machines, and large numbers of browser tabs during the test. Watch for high CPU or GPU use, overheating, or a memory-pressure warning. If the same channel remains unsynchronized on several updated devices while other channels work, report it to the broadcaster.

Latency is not always a fault
Live latency is the time between capture at the broadcaster and display on your screen. A stream can be smooth yet several seconds behind because the service is intentionally maintaining a read-ahead buffer. This is different from buffering, where playback repeatedly stops to obtain more data.

Choose the right YouTube latency mode
YouTube describes the trade-off directly: lower latency gives viewers less delay, but “your viewers may experience more playback buffering.” Normal latency provides the highest viewer quality and the largest stability margin. Low latency is generally under 10 seconds, while ultra-low latency is generally under 5 seconds; the exact experience varies with the stream and network.
For a viewer, a broadcaster’s latency choice cannot be overridden completely. If a stream offers a low-latency option, use it when timely chat or interaction matters and your connection is stable. If pauses are more disruptive than delay, accept normal latency or choose a lower quality.
Disable low latency on Twitch when quality is poor
On Twitch, open the player’s Settings, choose Advanced, and turn off Low Latency. This gives the player more read-ahead margin and can reduce buffering on a variable connection. The trade-off is a larger delay between the broadcaster and your screen, so re-enable the option when your connection is stable and responsiveness matters.

When the broadcaster is the problem
A single failing stream is a strong clue. Broadcasters must balance resolution, frame rate, encoder settings, bitrate, keyframe timing, and upload capacity. If their upload path cannot sustain the configured stream, viewers may see pauses, dropped frames, audio/video drift, or repeated quality changes even on excellent connections.
Twitch’s guidance emphasizes that a stable stream is preferable to pushing for a higher quality that causes dropped frames or tests the limits of the broadcaster’s internet connection. As a viewer, you can refresh, lower quality, disable low latency, and compare channels; you cannot repair an encoder or upload link remotely.
Send the streamer a concise report containing the channel name, approximate time, device and app or browser, whether other channels worked, and the exact symptom. Avoid claiming that your ISP is at fault when only one channel failed.
Quick Recap
A complete troubleshooting order
- Refresh the player or restart the app.
- Play another channel on the same service.
- Switch to Auto or a lower resolution.
- Test Ethernet, cellular, or another Wi‑Fi network.
- Restart the modem and router.
- Open a private window and disable extensions.
- Update the browser, app, operating system, and GPU driver.
- For Twitch error 3000 or video-freeze symptoms, toggle hardware acceleration off and restart the browser.
- For persistent Twitch buffering, open Settings > Advanced and disable Low Latency.
- Compare another device. If only one channel remains bad, notify the broadcaster; if every service remains bad, contact the ISP or device support.
Prevent buffering and delay from returning
- Prefer Ethernet for fixed devices such as desktops and televisions.
- Keep the router in an open, central location and reduce competing traffic during important streams.
- Choose a quality setting that leaves download headroom instead of running at the connection’s limit.
- Keep the browser, streaming app, operating system, and graphics driver updated.
- Use private-window testing when a player suddenly stops working after a browser or extension change.
- Use normal latency when uninterrupted playback matters more than rapid interaction.
- Record whether the fault affects one channel or all channels before escalating it.
