Start by checking whether the problem follows one title, app, or device; then test the connection and work through the free fixes below before considering new equipment or a faster internet plan.
First, find out where the problem occurs
Notice whether the issue affects one movie, one streaming app, one playback device, or several services and devices. This pattern helps narrow the possibilities, but does not by itself prove the cause.
- One title: Try another title in the same app.
- One app: Try another streaming service on the same device, if available.
- One device: Try the same service on another device connected to the same network.
- Several devices or services: Focus first on the shared internet connection and home network.
A workplace, hotel, or other public network may block video services, so a service failing there does not necessarily indicate a problem with your device.
Check the connection against the video quality
Run the streaming service’s connection check, if it offers one, or use a speed test on the device that is buffering. A result from a phone elsewhere in the home may not reflect the TV’s Wi-Fi connection. Compare the result with the service’s guidance for the resolution you want.

| Netflix resolution | Netflix stable-connection recommendation |
|---|---|
| HD (720p) | At least 3 Mbps |
| Full HD (1080p) | At least 5 Mbps |
| UHD (4K) | At least 15 Mbps |
These are Netflix recommendations, not guarantees or universal requirements for other services. A speed test is only a clue: connection stability, Wi-Fi conditions, concurrent network use, and congestion along the route between a service and your screen can also affect playback quality. Netflix notes that many factors can affect streaming video quality: Netflix’s connection speed recommendations.
If the connection is too slow or inconsistent for the selected resolution, lower the video quality temporarily if the app provides that option. Netflix says reducing quality may help where an internet provider limits speed. If the test looks adequate but playback still struggles, continue with the device and Wi-Fi checks rather than assuming you need a faster plan.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Restart the app and playback device
- Close the streaming app and open it again.
- Restart the TV, streaming stick, game console, phone, or other playback device.
- Install available updates for the streaming app and device operating system. Netflix identifies a weak or unstable connection and device updates as possible causes of slow loading or buffering; its help flow also recommends updating Android OS where relevant: Netflix troubleshooting for slow loading or buffering.
Restart the modem and router
If more than one device or service is affected, restart the home network equipment. For Netflix’s TV troubleshooting procedure, unplug the modem and router, wait 30 seconds, reconnect them, wait one minute for the connection to return, and then turn the playback device back on. Some equipment takes longer to reconnect; follow its manufacturer’s instructions if they differ.
After the network is back, test the affected service again. Prime Video also recommends that users may need to restart the connected device and/or router: Prime Video playback troubleshooting.

Improve Wi-Fi before buying equipment
If the device uses Wi-Fi, try moving it closer to the router and testing again. Place the router in a more open location where practical, and reduce nearby wireless interference from other devices or appliances. A TV tucked behind a recessed wall or blocked by metal can have a weaker signal; YouTube recommends keeping the playback device within router range and reducing interference: YouTube video playback troubleshooting.
If you can, compare playback over a wired network connection. A stable wired test can help identify a Wi-Fi coverage or interference issue; it does not establish that a particular router or mesh system is needed. Repositioning existing equipment is a useful no-cost first step.

Check HDMI and HDCP for an external player
If a streaming box, console, or other external player connects to the TV by HDMI, the display path must support the format you want. Prime Video specifies an HDMI cable compatible with HDCP 1.4 for HD playback and HDCP 2.2 for UHD/HDR playback. Check the player, TV or display, HDMI port, and cable specifications if the issue is limited to an external device or higher-resolution/HDR playback. This is a compatibility check, not a fix for Wi-Fi buffering.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to contact your provider or device maker
- Several services or devices still have trouble after restarting the network and checking Wi-Fi: contact your internet provider and describe which devices and services are affected.
- One app or service is affected across devices: consult that service’s support, since the issue may be specific to the service or account.
- One playback device is affected: contact its manufacturer or follow its update and troubleshooting guidance.
- An external player has a resolution or HDR problem: check the HDCP capability of the player-to-display connection against the format you are trying to play.
Consider paid changes only after the pattern points to them. Persistent low performance across devices may warrant an ISP investigation; weak Wi-Fi coverage may justify evaluating networking equipment after placement and interference checks. The symptoms alone do not establish that either purchase is necessary.
