If a live sports stream keeps buffering, looks blurry, or plays audio without video, first check whether the fault is limited to one app or event. Then test the connection under real viewing conditions, restart the app, device, and (for home internet) router, and reduce competing network use. No single step fixes every cause: distance from the router, Wi-Fi interference, household congestion, device or app faults, and service-side issues can all affect playback.
Is the problem your network, device, app, or the sports service?
Start with two quick comparisons before changing settings:
- On the same device, try another streaming app.
- If possible, play the same service on another supported device using the same connection.
If several apps fail on multiple devices, the home network or internet provider is a more likely place to investigate. If other apps work and the issue is confined to one service or event, the app or provider may be involved. These checks help narrow the cause, but they cannot confirm whether a particular game is experiencing a service outage.
ESPN recommends trying another app and device as part of its playback troubleshooting guidance. YouTube TV likewise suggests checking other apps to help identify a device issue.

Does your connection meet the service’s streaming recommendation?
Run a speed test on the device or network path you use to watch, if possible. Compare the result with your service’s stated recommendation, and consider whether others are streaming or downloading at the same time. A speed result alone does not rule out instability: router distance, Wi-Fi interference, connected-device load, and an ISP network issue can also affect playback.

What should you try first when the stream freezes or looks blurry?
- Close and reopen the streaming app. Try the live stream again.
- Restart the viewing device. Open the app and test playback.
- Check for updates. Install available updates for the app and device operating system, then test again.
- Try another app. If other apps play normally but this one does not, continue with the service-specific steps below.
- Reinstall the affected app if simpler steps fail. Sign in again if required, then test the stream.
Test playback after each step so you can tell which change helped. ESPN and YouTube TV both recommend app/device troubleshooting such as restarting, updating, and—in applicable cases—reinstalling.

- Turn off the viewing device and modem/router.
- Unplug the modem/router from power and wait at least 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the equipment and let it restart.
- Turn on the viewing device, reopen the app, and try the stream.
YouTube TV also advises unplugging the router, waiting 30 seconds, then plugging it back in. A router restart does not apply to a cellular-only connection. See ESPN’s power-cycle guidance and YouTube TV’s troubleshooting steps.
Can lowering video quality stop buffering?
It may help when the connection is constrained. Close other applications, pause downloads, or ask other household members to reduce simultaneous network use. If the service offers playback-quality controls, choose a lower setting and test the stream. YouTube TV recommends lowering video quality and notes that many devices streaming at once can cause buffering.

The trade-off is a less detailed picture. Whether playback improves depends on the network and device; a lower setting is not a guaranteed fix. ESPN also notes that waiting several minutes during internet congestion or closing other computer applications may help.

What should you tell streaming support if the problem persists?
After the basic checks, contact the streaming provider and include enough detail to distinguish a network issue from an app or event problem:
- The event or program, and the date and time the problem occurred.
- Your device and platform (for example, the app on a TV or phone).
- Your location and connection type, such as home Wi-Fi or cellular.
- What happened: buffering, low resolution, a blank picture, or audio without video.
- Whether another app worked on the same device and whether the stream worked on another device.
- Which troubleshooting steps you already tried and what changed, if anything.
ESPN directs viewers to customer support if its troubleshooting steps do not resolve playback problems. For live mobile help, its support route is Contact Support in the app settings. Do not assume a specific game is down without confirmation from the service.
