For a blurry or unstable PS5 picture, first check the resolution the console is sending, then simplify the HDMI connection. If the problem is flickering, try lowering the PS5’s Video Transfer Rate; if it is softness in a particular game, check whether the console and game support PSSR before changing image settings. PSSR is not a universal sharpness control.
Identify what is wrong with the picture
Different symptoms point to different causes. A consistently soft image may relate to the game’s rendering, its supported resolution, or the output reaching the display. Flicker or brief dropouts more often call for checking the signal path and output mode. A black border or cropped picture has a separate display-area adjustment.
- Soft image: check the console’s reported resolution and whether the game supports the relevant enhancement.
- Flicker: try a lower Video Transfer Rate and check the HDMI cable, port, and any devices between the console and screen.
- Signal loss or no image: simplify the HDMI path and follow Sony’s no-image power-cycle advice if needed.
- Cropped image or black border: adjust the display area rather than changing upscaling settings.
Confirm the PS5’s output resolution
On the console, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Review Current Video Output Signal and the connected HDMI device information, including resolution, VRR, and HDR. Sony says Resolution set to Automatic selects the highest resolution supported by the TV. For 4K output, the display must support 4K; you can select 2160p under Resolution.
The reported output is a useful check, not a guarantee that every game renders internally at that resolution. The final picture also depends on the game and the rest of the display setup. If the console reports a lower resolution than expected, check the display’s supported modes and the HDMI path before assuming an upscaling problem. For flicker, lower Video Transfer Rate
If the screen flickers, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Video Transfer Rate and try -1; if needed, test -2. Sony identifies these options as a way to limit the 4K output signal, which may improve picture quality or stability.
This is a trade-off rather than a general image-enhancement setting: limiting the signal can restrict high-bandwidth modes, including 4K/120 Hz and selected 4K 50/60 Hz color formats. If lowering the rate stops flicker, you can decide whether that stability is preferable to the affected output mode.

Check the HDMI connection before changing more settings
- Reseat the HDMI cable at both the PS5 and the display.
- Try a different HDMI port on the display. If available, test another cable to determine whether the current cable or port is involved.
- Connect the PS5 directly to the display, temporarily bypassing a receiver, soundbar, or capture device.
- Check the display manual for any settings required for high-resolution signals, and install current display firmware.
Sony recommends using the cable included with the PS5 for high-performance features. For 4K/120 Hz, use that cable or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for the output. Replacing a cable is useful if the existing one is faulty or unsuitable; it will not fix game-specific softness or a display that does not support the desired resolution. If the screen shows no image
For a no-image condition, Sony advises turning off the display and console, disconnecting their power cables, waiting 20 minutes, reconnecting them, and checking again. This is a troubleshooting step for no image output, not a guaranteed cure for blur or flicker. If the issue persists, contact PlayStation Repairs.

Test VRR or 120 Hz only if the symptom fits
VRR adjusts refresh rate in real time, but both the TV and game must support it, and results vary by TV. If video output problems occur when playing 120 Hz games on a monitor or another display, Sony advises turning off 120 Hz Output in Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. If enabling Apply to Unsupported Games causes unexpected behavior, turn that option off.
Change one setting at a time and retest the same game and scene. That makes it easier to tell whether VRR or 120 Hz was related to the symptom instead of changing several variables at once.

Know when PS5 PSSR can help
Enhance PSSR Image Quality is available on consoles in Sony’s CFI-7000 model group, and only applies to certain PSSR-compatible games. It is on by default. Find it at Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Enhance PSSR Image Quality; turn it off if gameplay behaves unexpectedly. Sony does not describe it as a general setting for sharpening every PS5 game or standard PS5 console. Check Sony’s video output and PSSR guidance for the supported setting and output details.
For PS4 games on PS5 Pro
PS5 Pro has a separate Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games setting. Sony recommends checking that the display supports 2160p/60 Hz or 1440p/60 Hz output, and turning the enhancement off if unexpected gameplay behavior occurs. This is distinct from PSSR and should not be treated as an option available on every PS5. See Sony’s PS5 Pro image-quality guidance.

Fix a cropped picture or black border
If the picture is cut off or surrounded by a black border rather than blurry, open Settings > Screen and Video > Screen > Adjust Display Area and follow the on-screen instructions. Sony lists this as the control for fitting the display area; it does not change game rendering or PSSR.
