If PSSR makes fine details look blurry, shimmer, or flicker, first check that your PS5 Pro and game are up to date, then compare the optional Enhance PSSR Image Quality setting in the same scene. Turn it off again if it creates unexpected effects. PSSR and this setting are PS5 Pro features; they do not describe the standard PS5’s graphics options.
What PSSR can—and cannot—explain
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is an AI library that analyzes each frame pixel by pixel as it upscales game visuals, according to [Sony’s March 16, 2026 announcement]. Sony says its upgraded version improves reconstruction precision, motion stability, and fine-detail clarity. Those aims do not mean every game or scene will look sharper, or that every flicker, soft edge, or afterimage is caused by PSSR.

Before changing settings, note the affected game, its graphics mode, and what the artifact looks like: soft fine details, shimmer around moving objects, flickering, or an afterimage. If the issue occurs only in one title or mode, that pattern is useful; it does not by itself prove a PSSR fault.
Check PS5 Pro software and game support
The upgraded PSSR is delivered through PS5 system software and requires support from the game. Sony’s March 16, 2026 announcement says players can check for and install system updates in the console’s settings, and that the optional enhanced setting applies to supported PS5 Pro titles. The supported-game list can change, so check current PlayStation information rather than assuming a title supports the upgraded version based on an older list.

- Install any available PS5 Pro system software update using the console’s system settings.
- Confirm the affected game is listed as supporting the upgraded PSSR or the enhanced setting in current PlayStation information.
- Check the game’s available graphics modes and use the same mode when comparing image quality.
Compare the optional Enhance PSSR Image Quality setting
On PS5 Pro, the setting is called Enhance PSSR Image Quality. Sony says it can improve image stability in supported titles, including games designed around original PSSR, but results vary by title. It is not a guaranteed sharpness boost.
- Choose a repeatable scene where the blurry graphics, shimmer, or flickering are easy to see.
- Keep the game and graphics mode unchanged, then compare that scene with Enhance PSSR Image Quality enabled and disabled.
- Change only this setting between comparisons. Look at the same fine details and moving edges in both versions.
- If enabling it produces unexpected visual effects, disable it. Sony says the setting can be turned off at any time.
For example, a developer quoted by Sony described more naturally restored hair detail and less flickering and afterimage in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. That is a comment about that title, not a guarantee for every PSSR game.
Check the TV and HDMI path for broader picture problems
Try display-path checks if picture trouble appears across games or looks like a general signal problem. PlayStation’s PS5 picture and sound troubleshooting guidance covers general console issues; it does not establish that an HDMI cable or display causes PSSR reconstruction artifacts.

- Connect the PS5 Pro directly to the TV or display for a test, removing intermediary audio/video equipment.
- Confirm the display is set to the HDMI input connected to the console.
- Check whether the TV or display has a software or firmware update.
- Try another HDMI port or test with a known-good HDMI cable.
To view or change the console’s output resolution, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. These checks can help isolate a general connection or display issue; they are not a proven fix for game-specific shimmer or blur.

When blurry or shimmering graphics persist
If the artifact remains limited to one game or graphics mode after the comparisons above, check that game’s current official patch notes and support information for mode-specific changes. Sony’s general display guidance does not identify a universal PSSR fix, and the available official information does not establish a single cause or remedy for every title. For a persistent title-specific issue, contact the game’s official support; if picture problems extend beyond one game, contact PlayStation Support.
