For dark or overexposed shots, use Halide’s histogram and exposure controls before capture; in low light, balance shutter speed against motion blur and ISO against image noise. If you captured RAW, you may be able to recover some shadow or highlight detail in editing, but not information the camera never recorded.
Fix blur by separating focus problems from motion
Manual focus can help when Halide focused on the wrong distance. It will not fix softness caused by movement during the exposure, so identify which kind of blur you have before changing settings.
When the camera focused at the wrong distance
- Enter manual focus in Halide and turn the focus dial until the subject looks sharp.
- Use the focus loupe to inspect the center of the image, or turn on focus peaking to identify sharp edges.
- For another capture, return to autofocus if you do not need to hold a particular focus distance.
Halide’s product page documents swiping left or right for focus. Gestures and controls can vary by app version, so use the current interface if it differs.
When the phone or subject moved
A stationary subject can still look blurry if the phone moves while the shutter is open; a moving subject can blur for the same reason. When manual shutter controls are available, try a faster shutter speed. Stabilizing the phone may also help with a static scene. A tripod is a practical way to do that, though it is not a recommendation made by Halide.

Check exposure with Halide’s histogram
Turn on the histogram with the bar-graph control in Halide’s quickbar. The left side represents shadows and the right side represents highlights. A strong pileup at the left can signal a very dark image with lost shadow information; a strong pileup at the right can signal lost highlight detail. Halide’s histogram guide cautions that a scene does not always produce an evenly distributed graph. The useful warning is tall bars concentrated at one side, not a graph that fails to look balanced.
Adjust exposure while watching the histogram. Halide documents swiping up or down to adjust exposure; if that gesture is different in your version, find the exposure control in the current interface. For a dark image, move exposure up only as far as needed to show the subject without pushing important highlights too far right. For an overexposed image, reduce exposure and watch whether the highlights move away from the edge.

Choose low-light settings for the scene
Halide’s manual controls let you adjust shutter speed and ISO, but neither setting is universally best. A longer exposure collects more light and also gives motion more time to blur the shot. Higher ISO can make an image possible with less light, at the cost of more noise; lower ISO reduces noise but requires more light.
- Static scene, phone held steady: A longer shutter may help gather light. If you use a tripod, that can reduce blur from hand movement, but it will not stop moving subjects.
- Moving subject or handheld shot: Favor a faster shutter where available to limit motion blur. Raising ISO may be the tradeoff for a brighter capture, with more visible noise.
- Noise is the main concern: A lower ISO can reduce noise, but the scene needs enough light or a longer exposure to compensate.
Halide’s Fully Manual guide explains that longer shutter speeds make the camera less responsive. Its 2020 guide gives a shutter range from 1 second to 1/8000th of a second or smaller, but that is an older app capability statement, not a guarantee for every current iPhone or Halide version.

Choose a processing option that fits the photo
Halide describes three processing choices: Process Zero, Apple Processing, and ProRAW. They affect the look and the editing latitude differently; a darker or high-contrast scene is not automatically a good candidate for Process Zero.

Recover some exposure detail after capture
If you already took a supported Process Zero RAW photo, Halide says Image Lab can adjust its exposure after capture. Open the last photo or library, select the shot, and use the +/- control. A practical starting order is exposure, white balance, reducing highlights, then raising shadows.
RAW data may preserve details in bright or dark areas that are not apparent in the initial rendering, but recovery depends on what was captured and how far the highlights or shadows were clipped. Halide’s Image Lab guide describes this workflow; it does not mean every clipped highlight or black shadow can be restored.

Quick diagnosis
- Only the wrong distance is sharp: adjust manual focus and check with the loupe or peaking.
- Edges smear in the direction of motion: suspect movement; stabilize the phone or use a faster shutter where possible.
- The histogram crowds the left edge: the image may be too dark or losing shadow detail; raise exposure carefully.
- The histogram crowds the right edge: highlights may be clipped; reduce exposure before the next capture.
- A dark scene looks grainy: consider whether high ISO or Process Zero’s less-enhanced rendering is contributing; choose processing and exposure settings for the scene rather than assuming one mode is always best.
