To fix wireless-headphone Bluetooth problems, first identify whether the headphones will not pair, disconnect after connecting, or stay connected without usable sound. Check charge, pairing mode, distance and the selected audio output; then compare locally stored audio with streaming before forgetting and re-pairing the headphones. If the problem persists, follow the steps for your operating system and the exact headphone model—there is no single reset, codec setting or fix that applies to every pair.
Identify what is failing
Bluetooth symptoms that sound alike can have different causes. Note the headphone make and model, the source device and operating system, and whether the issue happens with one source or several. Also distinguish among these cases:
- They do not appear when you try to pair: check pairing mode, charge and range.
- They appear but will not connect, or will not reconnect: remove the saved pairing and add the headphones again.
- They say connected but there is no sound: check the source device’s selected audio output.
- Audio plays but cuts out or sounds distorted: compare local playback with streaming, then check the listening environment and any model-specific settings.
These distinctions matter: Microsoft treats connection, audio-output and repeated-disconnection problems as separate Windows troubleshooting issues. Microsoft’s pairing guidance, audio guidance and disconnect guidance address different symptoms.
Do the quick checks first
- Charge the headphones. A low battery can prevent pairing or interrupt use. Check the headphone maker’s instructions if its power or pairing indicators are unclear.
- Put the headphones into pairing mode. Being powered on is not always the same as being discoverable. Use the model’s pairing instructions.
- Bring the source close. Keep the phone or computer nearby and reduce walls, floors and other obstructions between it and the headphones.
- Check Bluetooth on the source. For a Windows PC, confirm Bluetooth is enabled and that the PC supports Bluetooth. Microsoft notes that the headphones must be in pairing mode and within range of the PC.
- Restart the source device. If the headphones are listed but refuse to connect, remove them from the saved-device list and pair them again.
On Android, use Google’s Bluetooth help and the phone and headphone makers’ instructions. Menu names and available options vary among Android devices.

Why do my Bluetooth headphones keep cutting out?
Compare streaming with audio stored on the device
Keep the phone or computer nearby and play a locally stored track, then compare it with streamed audio. Apple Support says, “Your headphones may lose their connection with streaming audio more often than they do with content that is stored on your device.” Its advice is to test this difference before assuming the headphones need resetting; the support page was published January 23, 2025. Apple’s wireless-headphone audio troubleshooting covers cutting out and distortion.
If stored audio stays steady but streamed audio cuts out, treat that as a clue, not proof that Bluetooth is faultless. Test in another location and investigate the network or app separately.
Reduce possible interference and obstructions
Try a different location, keeping the source close. Apple suggests moving away from crowded places or high Wi-Fi activity, poorly shielded cables, microwave ovens and wireless speakers. Walls and other obstructions can also get in the way of the connection.

Compare devices to narrow down the cause
If the problem continues, try the same headphones with another source device, or try a different Bluetooth audio device with the original source. This is a practical way to see whether the symptom follows the headphones or the phone or computer; it does not, by itself, prove which component is faulty.

Make sure the headphones are charged, in pairing mode and within range, then confirm Bluetooth is enabled on the source. In Windows, Microsoft recommends removing and adding the device again if it is listed but will not connect. The precise Windows steps differ between Windows 10 and Windows 11, so follow the instructions for your version on Microsoft’s troubleshooting page.
If the headphones were paired to another phone or computer, check the model’s instructions for how pairing or connections to multiple sources work. Do not assume that every model enters pairing mode or handles saved devices the same way.

Forget the headphones and pair again
Re-pairing can clear a stale connection entry. Before removing the device, make sure you know how to put the headphones back into pairing mode.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the phone or computer and choose the headphones from the saved-device list.
- Choose the option to forget, remove or unpair them. The label depends on the operating system.
- Restart the source device.
- Put the headphones into pairing mode using the maker’s instructions.
- Add them again from the source device’s Bluetooth settings.
Apple recommends forgetting or unpairing, restarting the source and pairing again when wireless-headphone sound continues to cut out. Microsoft’s Windows instructions similarly advise removing and re-adding a device that is listed but will not connect. Follow the steps for the source and headphone model you have.

A Bluetooth connection does not necessarily mean the computer is sending sound to the headphones. In Windows, open sound settings and confirm the headphones are selected as the output device. If the output is already selected, try turning Bluetooth off and on, removing and re-adding the headphones, checking for driver updates and restarting. See Microsoft’s Windows Bluetooth audio guidance for steps appropriate to your version.

Microsoft lists power-saving settings, outdated drivers and temporary system glitches among possible causes of repeated Bluetooth disconnections. Work through these checks:
- Run the built-in troubleshooter. On Windows 11, Microsoft recommends the automated Bluetooth troubleshooter in Get Help.
- Check battery or energy-saving settings. If the problem occurs while the PC is trying to save power, check Battery or Energy Saver settings.
- Review Bluetooth device power management. If the option is available, turn off Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power for the Bluetooth device. Availability depends on the PC and driver.
- Restart Bluetooth Support Service. Use Microsoft’s instructions for your Windows version.
- Check for driver and Windows updates. An outdated Bluetooth driver can contribute to connection problems; use Windows Update or the PC maker’s driver guidance.
Microsoft’s Windows Bluetooth troubleshooting instructions provide the applicable paths. Settings and options can vary with Windows version, PC and driver.

Check codec or multipoint settings only when relevant
Codec-specific dropouts
Do not change codecs unless both the headphones and source device support the setting and the symptom fits. Sennheiser says LDAC dropouts on its Accentum Clip can relate to the codec’s high transmission rate, which may be more sensitive to interference and connection conditions than other Bluetooth codecs. This is model-specific manufacturer guidance, not a diagnosis for every pair of LDAC headphones. See Sennheiser’s Accentum Clip support page.
Multipoint and switching between sources
If the headphones connect to two devices, temporarily disconnect the second source or stop its audio stream, following the maker’s instructions. The way headphones switch sources varies by product. Sennheiser notes that a stream on a Windows PC may need to be stopped completely before sound switches to another device. Bose says a secondary device connected to its cited QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) may try to send notification audio. See Sennheiser’s guidance and Bose’s QuietComfort guidance; do not generalize either behavior to other models.
When to reset the headphones or seek support
If the checks above do not help, look up reset and firmware instructions for the exact headphone model before proceeding. A reset can erase pairing information or settings, and there is no universal reset sequence. Bose’s reset guidance, for example, is specific to QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen), not all Bose headphones or other brands.
If the headphones still fail with multiple source devices after you have followed the maker’s setup and firmware guidance, contact the headphone manufacturer or seller. A fault that follows the headphones across devices is useful information to provide, but it is not conclusive proof of a hardware failure.
