If Sony headphones keep cutting out, first update the firmware, test with one nearby playback device, and select Prioritize Stable Connection in Sony Sound Connect or Headphones Connect. Then remove radio interference, stop unused multipoint streams, and confirm that the phone or computer is routing audio to the headphones. Reset and re-pair only after those checks, using the procedure for your exact model.
Identify exactly what is failing
“Bluetooth problems” can describe several different faults. Play a downloaded or locally stored track with the headphones beside one playback device. Streaming can introduce a separate network problem, so a local track gives you a cleaner test. Record what happens before changing settings.

Keep the headphones close to the playback device during every comparison. If the failure occurs only with one phone, computer, app, or location, that difference is more useful than repeatedly pairing without changing the conditions.
Work through Sony’s troubleshooting sequence
1. Update the exact headphone model
Find the model name printed in the Sony app or Bluetooth settings, then install the latest firmware offered for that model through Sony’s support instructions or the companion app. Do this before deeper troubleshooting: firmware can change Bluetooth stability, multipoint behavior, and codec handling. Keep the headphones charged, leave the phone close to them, and do not interrupt an update. Restart the headphones after the app reports completion, then repeat the local-track test.

Do not assume that instructions for one WH, WF, LinkBuds, or other Sony family apply to another. Sony publishes model-specific help guides, and the available settings can differ by model, phone, operating system, and codec.
2. Remove common sources of radio interference
Sony identifies nearby Bluetooth devices, crowded locations, obstacles, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi traffic, microwaves, and covered headphone antennas as possible interference sources. For a controlled test:
- Put the phone or computer within a short distance of the headphones, ideally with a clear line of sight.
- Move away from walls, metal objects, bags, or clothing that could cover an antenna.
- Test in a quiet room, away from trains, stations, cash registers, busy offices, microwaves, and clusters of active Bluetooth devices.
- If practical, temporarily reduce nearby 2.4 GHz wireless traffic and compare the result with your normal location.
If skipping disappears in the quiet, close-range test and returns in a crowded place, interference is the likely explanation. Bluetooth range is not a guaranteed distance: obstacles and competing radio traffic can reduce the usable link well before the advertised maximum.

Open Sound Connect (the current Sony companion app; some model documentation still calls it Headphones Connect) and locate the Bluetooth connection-quality or sound-quality option. Select Prioritize Stable Connection, apply the change, and replay the same local track.

Sony explains that high-quality processing can increase the processing load and cause audio to skip. The stable-connection setting generally gives the wireless link more room to cope with interference and processing demand, although the exact codec and available choices depend on the model and source device.
On AAC-compatible Apple playback devices, Sony’s WH-1000XM5 guidance notes that Prioritize Sound Quality may be appropriate. That is model-specific guidance, not a universal rule. If sound-quality mode skips, use stable-connection mode for reliability; if both modes behave identically, continue with the next isolation test.

4. Test multipoint, Service Link, and silent streams
Multipoint allows supported Sony headphones to remain connected to two devices, but it also creates more connection state for the headphones to manage. A phone can retain an apparently idle media session while you are trying to listen from a computer. Sony also notes that multipoint and, on supported models, Service Link can increase processing load.

- Stop playback on the first device.
- Close the music, video, meeting, or browser app that may still hold an audio session.
- In the Sony app, verify which devices are connected and which multipoint options are enabled.
- Disconnect the device you are not using.
- If the model offers Service Link, turn it off temporarily and retest.
- If switching is still unreliable, disable multipoint entirely and test with one device.
If one-device operation is stable but two-device operation is not, the headphones are probably responding to connection state or processing load rather than failing as a basic Bluetooth receiver. Re-enable features one at a time after you have identified the stable baseline.
5. Correct the computer’s audio route
A computer can show Sony headphones as connected while sending sound to built-in speakers, a monitor, a dock, or a different Bluetooth device. Select the headphones explicitly.
- Windows 11: open Settings > System > Sound, choose the Sony headphones under Output, and play a local track. In the per-app volume controls, confirm that the application is not assigned to another output.
- macOS: open System Settings > Sound > Output and select the Sony headphones. Check the application’s own output selector if it has one.
- Calls and meetings: select the Sony headphones as both the speaker and the microphone when you want the call headset profile. For music, select the media profile instead. A call application can change the active profile while the operating system still reports a Bluetooth connection.
After changing the route, stop and restart the application. Some programs choose an output when they launch and do not follow a later system change until restarted.

6. Reset, remove the old pairing, and pair again
Reset is a later remedy, not the first response to every dropout. Sony uses different button combinations and timing for different models, so there is no safe universal reset sequence. Open the exact model’s Sony Help Guide and follow its reset or initialize procedure precisely.

- Charge the headphones sufficiently and keep the model guide available.
- Perform the model-specific reset or initialization.
- On the phone or computer, open Bluetooth settings and remove or forget the old Sony entry.
- Turn Bluetooth off and back on, then put the headphones into pairing mode using the model guide.
- Pair them again, test with one device, and leave multipoint disabled until basic playback is reliable.
Initialization may erase saved pairing information and custom settings. If the guide distinguishes a simple reset from initialization, use the less destructive option first unless Sony’s instructions for your symptom say otherwise.
Use comparison tests to isolate the cause
Change one condition at a time and write down whether the dropout occurs. This prevents a reset, app change, and location change from obscuring the real cause.

Use a downloaded track for each comparison and keep volume moderate. A single streaming app, meeting service, or browser tab can introduce its own buffering or output behavior, which is why it should not be the only test source.

Start playback, open the phone’s audio-output picker, and select the Sony headphones rather than relying only on the Bluetooth connection screen. Check that media volume is raised and that the app is not muted. If the phone offers separate call and media destinations, choose the headphones for the type of audio you are testing.

Disconnect other nearby Bluetooth speakers, cars, earbuds, and computers for the test. A phone may automatically route a new stream to a previously used device. If one device is connected through multipoint, stop its playback and close its media app before selecting the phone as the active source.
Test the same local file in a second app. If only one app is silent, inspect that app’s output setting or restart it; do not reset the headphones for an application-specific route problem.
Fix switching problems between a phone and laptop
Automatic switching is not instantaneous handoff in every model or operating-system combination. A device that is still playing, or merely holding an audio session, can keep the headphones focused on it.

- Close the first device’s music, video, meeting, or browser app.
- Start playback on the target device and select the Sony headphones as its output.
- If the target device remains silent, disconnect the first device in Bluetooth settings.
- Disable multipoint and repeat the test with only the target device paired.
Once one-device switching works, reconnect the second device and enable multipoint. If the fault returns only after enabling Service Link or another companion feature, leave that feature off or consult the exact model guide for its intended behavior.
When dropouts continue after troubleshooting
Persistent failure in every location, with current firmware, stable-connection mode, one nearby device, and a correct output route points away from ordinary interference. Before seeking service, document:
- the exact headphone model and firmware version;
- the phone or computer model and operating-system version;
- whether the fault is skipping, disconnecting, silence, one-sided audio, or failed switching;
- whether it occurs with a local track and with more than one playback device;
- whether multipoint and Service Link are disabled;
- whether reset and fresh pairing changed anything.
If the headphones fail the same controlled test with multiple nearby devices, follow Sony’s model-specific support or service route. If they work reliably with another device, focus on the original phone or computer’s Bluetooth stack, output route, profile selection, or surrounding wireless environment rather than repeatedly initializing the headphones.
Prevent future Bluetooth audio skips
- Install firmware updates for the exact model when Sony makes them available.
- Keep the playback device close and avoid covering the headphone antennas.
- Use Prioritize Stable Connection when reliability matters more than maximum sound-quality processing.
- Stop playback and close apps on an unused multipoint device.
- Disconnect devices you no longer need and leave Service Link off if it increases instability.
- Before a call, verify the computer’s selected speaker and microphone profile.
- When a problem starts, reproduce it with one nearby device and a local track before changing several settings at once.
These checks separate the four issues most often confused with one another: radio interference, processing load, an active second connection, and incorrect audio routing. They also preserve your settings and pairing information until a model-specific reset is genuinely justified.
