The original 2001 Lionhead Studios game Black & White can usually be made playable on a modern Windows installation by applying the official patches in sequence and then the community 1.42 patch. Install from a legitimate disc, use C: as the installation location, configure graphics with the 1.42 setup program, and launch runblack.exe as administrator. Do not use Windows Compatibility mode unless a specific, tested workaround requires it; the Black & White Community guide says it causes more problems than it solves.

Most failures fall into one of four layers: the old SafeDisc disc check being blocked by newer Windows security, an incomplete or incorrectly ordered patch installation, modern display scaling and resolution settings, or graphics-card limitations exposed by the game’s old code. The steps below separate those causes so you can change one variable at a time.

What you need before troubleshooting

This guide is for the first Black & White, released for Microsoft Windows in 2001, not Black & White 2. You need a clean, legitimate game disc and a working optical drive. If your computer has no internal drive, an external USB DVD drive can provide the installation hardware; it will not modify the game or fix rendering problems by itself.

  • A legitimate original disc and its product media.
  • Administrator access to install the game, patches and optional add-ons.
  • An optical drive, internal or USB-connected.
  • A Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer. The community patch specifically documents fixes for Windows 7, 8 and 10; no source guarantees identical behavior on every Windows 11 build, GPU, driver or disc revision.

Keep the disc available throughout setup. A patched installation may still need the original media for the game’s legacy disc verification, and the exact behavior differs between disc revisions and Windows builds.

Perform a clean installation in the supported order

A clean install removes partial files and makes it possible to tell whether a later problem is caused by the game, Windows or a graphics setting. The Black & White Community setup sequence is strict: install the two official patches first, then the unofficial 1.42 patch.

  1. Install from the disc to the root of the system drive. Start the disc installer and choose C: as the installation location. The community guide reports that installing elsewhere is a major source of problems for this game.
  2. Run the installer as administrator. If the installer offers to start the game immediately after copying files, decline that prompt. Patching must be completed before the first launch.
  3. Install official patch 1.1. Allow it to finish before starting another installer.
  4. Install official patch 1.2. This follows 1.1; do not reverse the order.
  5. Skip patch 1.3. The setup guide describes 1.3 as not being a gameplay patch, while the openblack project describes it as a generally unstable Power Glove-support patch. It is not part of the recommended modern installation.
  6. Install community patch 1.42. Run its Setup.exe as administrator. Select the monitor resolution you intend to use and set graphics quality to Maximum Detail. The patch blocks the game’s broken Custom detail level.
  7. Launch the patched executable. Start runblack.exe as administrator. Leave Windows Compatibility mode disabled; the current community setup instructions specifically warn against it.
  8. Restore music if necessary. If the game starts without music, copy the disc’s Audio folder into the installation directory and merge the folders when Windows asks.

The patch sequence is not interchangeable. Applying 1.42 to a partially installed copy, launching before patching, or adding 1.3 can leave you diagnosing a mixed installation rather than the original problem.

Why an original disc may not launch

Black & White uses the SafeDisc-era copy-protection system. The v1.42 patch documents a fix for the game not running on Windows 7, 8 and 10 because of SafeDisc DRM. Microsoft’s explanation of legacy disc protection notes that newer Windows versions may block old SafeDisc or SecuROM components for security reasons. When that component is unavailable, the visible symptom can be a silent exit, a disc error or an installer that appears to do nothing.

Use the clean-install sequence and keep the legitimate disc in the drive. Do not disable Windows security features and do not replace the game executable with an untrusted download. There is no published compatibility matrix covering every Windows 10 or 11 build, optical-drive model, disc revision, graphics card and driver, so a result that works on one system is not a universal guarantee.

Disc and drive checks

  • Confirm that Windows can see the disc and browse its files before starting setup.
  • If the computer lacks an internal drive, connect an external USB DVD drive directly rather than through an unreliable hub.
  • Use the original media for the installation instead of a copied image or an executable obtained from an unknown source.
  • If the installer completes but the game closes immediately, treat it as a patch or SafeDisc compatibility problem first, not as a graphics-setting problem.

When the game closes immediately or crashes after the intro

A launch failure and a post-intro crash can look similar, but they point to different stages. A silent exit before the main menu is commonly associated with SafeDisc handling or an incomplete patch sequence. A crash after the intro is more often exposed when the game switches from its opening video to the configured 3D display mode.

Use the known-good baseline

  1. Verify that official patches 1.1 and 1.2 were installed in that order, followed by community patch 1.42.
  2. Open the 1.42 Setup.exe as administrator and select a standard monitor resolution with Maximum Detail.
  3. Launch runblack.exe as administrator with Windows Compatibility mode off.
  4. Test one launch without changing any other Windows display setting.

If that baseline works, make only one display change at a time. Changing resolution, windowed mode and DPI scaling simultaneously makes it impossible to identify which setting caused a new crash.

High-resolution and high-DPI crashes

The v1.42 publisher lists a fix for crashes at resolutions above 1080p and on high-DPI displays. Set the game’s resolution through the patch’s setup program rather than by editing unrelated configuration files. If the crash appears only after Windows display scaling has been changed, return temporarily to a known standard scaling value and test again before applying a DPI override.

When the intro plays but the game never reaches the menu

Re-run the patch setup as administrator and confirm that the selected resolution is supported by the display. A crash at this transition does not prove that the disc is defective: it can occur when the old renderer receives a modern scaling or resolution combination. If changing to a different resolution makes the game start, keep that setting and then test higher values individually.

Fix a zoomed, shifted or misaligned picture

A picture that is enlarged, cut off or shifted usually involves the interaction between the game’s fixed-era display assumptions and Windows scaling. A Black & White Community troubleshooting thread recommends testing windowed mode or another resolution, then assigning a high-DPI scaling override to the game executable.

  1. Open the 1.42 setup program and choose a different resolution. Test the result before changing anything else.
  2. If the image is still zoomed or offset, try windowed mode and launch the game again.
  3. In Windows, locate runblack.exe, open its Properties dialog and choose the Compatibility tab.
  4. Select the high-DPI scaling override option and set scaling to be performed by the Application.
  5. Apply the setting, launch the game, and check the image at the same resolution used in the patch setup.

These steps address scaling and placement. They do not promise to correct every widescreen rendering artifact. If a change makes the image worse, undo that single change and return to the last working combination.

Repair low-resolution textures and missing-looking graphics

Modern graphics cards can expose a signed-integer VRAM overflow in the original game. The open-source bw1-patches project documents the problem on cards with 2 GB or more of VRAM: the overflow can force the game to load low-resolution textures even when the hardware is more than capable of displaying the originals.

Apply the VRAM correction

  1. Install the community graphics fixes that correspond to your patched 1.42 installation.
  2. Reopen the game’s patch setup and confirm that graphics quality is set to Maximum Detail.
  3. Launch the game and inspect the same scene that previously showed blurry or missing-looking textures.

The texture symptom is different from a missing file. If only distant terrain, buildings or creature details look unusually coarse while the game otherwise runs, the VRAM overflow is a more plausible explanation than a damaged disc.

Restore landscape draw distance

The same project documents a separate patch that removes the CPU-family check responsible for capping landscape level-of-detail distance on modern processors. Apply that correction when the world switches to low-detail terrain unusually close to the camera, even after the texture issue has been addressed. It changes the distance at which detail levels are selected; it is not a replacement for the VRAM fix.

Widescreen loading-screen artifacts

A documented widescreen loading-screen fix restores the tip text and corrects the placement of the 4:3 tip image. This is a presentation correction for loading screens, not a universal fix for every in-game rendering defect. If the loading screen is corrected but terrain or objects remain blurry, troubleshoot the VRAM and level-of-detail issues separately.

Make graphics settings predictable

The game’s Custom detail level is known to be broken in the modern patching setup, which is why the community configuration uses Maximum Detail instead. Use the patch setup program as the single place for resolution and detail changes, then test in the game. Avoid changing several values between launches.

Resolution above 1080p v1.42 lists a crash fix for these resolutions. Choose the resolution in 1.42 Setup.exe and test it directly.
High-DPI display v1.42 lists a high-DPI crash fix; scaling can still make the picture zoomed or shifted. Use the executable’s high-DPI override with scaling performed by the application if needed.
Custom detail The openblack patch project documents this level as broken and blocks it. Use Maximum Detail.
Graphics card with 2 GB or more VRAM An old signed-integer overflow can force low-resolution textures. Apply the relevant community VRAM patch, then re-check Maximum Detail.
Modern processor A CPU-family check can cap landscape level-of-detail distance. Apply the documented CPU-check removal patch if distant terrain changes to low detail too early.

Restore missing music and audio

If the game launches but is silent, the community setup guide provides a simple file-level fix. Open the original disc, copy its Audio folder, paste it into the game’s installation directory, and accept Windows’ request to merge the folders. This restores the expected disc audio files without changing the executable.

Do this after the main installation and patching steps. If music returns but the game still crashes, keep the audio change in place and continue with display and graphics troubleshooting; audio restoration does not address SafeDisc, DPI or VRAM faults.

Enable official add-ons and creature unlockers

The v1.42 patch page lists fixes for the Football and other official add-ons. The setup guide says optional add-on installers should also be run as administrator. Creature unlockers are bundled with the unofficial patch rather than requiring a separate, untrusted executable.

  1. Finish the base-game patch sequence first.
  2. Run each legitimate optional add-on installer as administrator.
  3. Launch the game and verify the add-on before installing another one.
  4. If an add-on does not appear, rerun its installer with administrator rights and confirm that it targeted the same installation directory as runblack.exe.

Installing add-ons into a second copy of the game can make a correctly patched installation appear incomplete, so keep one installation path and verify it before troubleshooting the content.

What not to do

  • Do not install patch 1.3 as part of the normal sequence. The cited setup guidance excludes it, and the openblack project characterizes it as an unstable Power Glove-support patch.
  • Do not rely on Windows Compatibility mode as the first fix. The community guide explicitly warns that it creates more problems than it solves for this game.
  • Do not disable Windows security to force SafeDisc to run. Newer Windows versions block legacy protection components for security reasons; use the supported patch path and legitimate media instead.
  • Do not download replacement executables from unknown sources. A file that bypasses a disc check can introduce malware and does not establish that the rest of the installation is correct.
  • Do not change resolution, DPI scaling, windowed mode and graphics patches simultaneously. Test one variable, record the result, and only then continue.

Limits of modern compatibility troubleshooting

The documented fixes cover common failure modes, but they are not a complete hardware compatibility guarantee. The available guidance does not publish crash-rate statistics or a matrix for every Windows build, GPU vendor, driver, monitor, disc revision or optical drive. Windows 11 systems may therefore require experimentation even when the same patch sequence works on Windows 10.

If the clean installation, ordered patches, administrator launch and one-variable display tests do not change the symptom, record the exact Windows version, disc revision, monitor resolution, DPI scale, graphics card and point at which the game exits. That information distinguishes a SafeDisc launch failure from a renderer or scaling failure and prevents repeatedly reinstalling the same configuration.
