A black-looking PhantomJS screenshot is usually one of three different problems: a transparent PNG shown against a black viewer background, a page that never finished rendering, or valid image bytes being damaged while Jersey returns them. Diagnose those layers separately. First inspect the saved file and its alpha channel, then verify page loading and JavaScript, and only after that debug the HTTP response.
Start by proving what “black” means
Do not begin by installing Xvfb or changing Jersey annotations. Save the PhantomJS output to disk and inspect it independently of the REST service.
Check the file format and dimensions
- Confirm the file begins with a valid PNG signature (or the expected JPEG signature).
- Read its width and height. A zero, one-pixel, or unexpectedly tiny image points to capture geometry or an incomplete render.
- Open the file in an editor that can display an alpha channel, not only a web page with an opaque preview.
PhantomJS explicitly leaves the page background to the page. When no background is set, it can remain transparent. A viewer may display those transparent pixels as black even though the capture is not a black render. The PhantomJS FAQ documents the workaround of setting a white body background with document.body.bgColor = 'white'. Apply an equivalent CSS background when possible, or set it after the document exists and before page.render().
Use a controlled background diagnostic
In a temporary test, add this after the page has loaded:

Use a minimal PhantomJS capture before involving Jersey
Run the same URL with a small script from the command line. This separates browser rendering from Java process and HTTP-delivery issues.

Verify page readiness, resources and scripts
Log network activity
A successful page.open callback does not guarantee that every image, stylesheet, font or script succeeded. Keep onResourceRequested and add onResourceError while diagnosing. Look for blocked mixed content, DNS failures, redirects to a login page, certificate errors and requests that never finish.
The PhantomJS troubleshooting guidance specifically calls out network behavior and TLS/OpenSSL differences when HTTPS behaves differently from HTTP. Test the target URL from the same host and user account that runs the Jersey process; a browser on your workstation may have different certificates, proxy settings or outbound access.

Capture JavaScript exceptions
Install page.onError before opening the URL. A page exception can prevent the DOM from being created even though the screenshot call itself returns. Record the message and stack frames, then test the failing script in a reduced page.
Wait for application content
Many sites fill their layout asynchronously. A screenshot taken immediately after the initial response can contain an empty shell. Use a deterministic readiness condition in your script, such as polling for a known element, and only then render:

Set WebPage options before page.open(). The API documents javascriptEnabled, loadImages and resourceTimeout; these settings apply during the initial open, so changing them afterward will not repair a page that already loaded incorrectly.

Confirm that viewport dimensions are nonzero and that any clipRect lies inside the page. A clip rectangle outside the rendered area can produce an apparently empty image. The documented capture sequence is to configure the page, call page.open(), and then call page.render().

Check the binary actually used by the service
Run phantomjs --version under the same account and environment as Jersey. On servers with multiple installations, the shell path and the Java process path can resolve to different binaries. Log the absolute executable path, version, operating system and working directory at startup. Reproduce the command manually with that exact binary.
Do not add Xvfb by reflex
The PhantomJS FAQ says X server support was needed for version 1.4 or earlier; from version 1.5 onward PhantomJS was pure headless and did not require X11 or Xvfb. Check your deployed version before adding display infrastructure. An unnecessary virtual display can introduce permissions and lifecycle failures without fixing transparency or page errors.

Once the local PNG is correct, isolate HTTP delivery. The endpoint must return the raw bytes, the matching media type and no diagnostic text in the response body.

}For a production endpoint, validate path input, avoid loading very large files into heap, and stream with an InputStream when appropriate. Do not print logs, stack traces or JSON into the same output stream. Use image/png for PNG, image/jpeg for JPEG, and the correct disposition for downloads if clients should not display the image.
Compare file and response bytes
- Request the endpoint with

Content-TypeandContent-Length. - Compare the downloaded file size and hash with the locally saved PNG.
- Open the downloaded file and inspect its alpha channel again.
If the local file and downloaded bytes match, the remaining “black” appearance is in the client viewer or CSS, not PhantomJS or Jersey. If they differ, inspect filters, exception mappers, compression, proxy transformations and any code that converts bytes to a String.

Reduce the case before changing architecture
- Use one static URL and a minimal PhantomJS script.
- Record the PhantomJS version, Java/Jersey versions, operating system, executable path and command line.
- Save the local image, the HTTP response, headers and byte counts.
- Remove custom CSS, clipping, authentication and asynchronous widgets one at a time.
- Keep the smallest script that still fails. This is the useful artifact for an issue report or team hand-off.
There is no documented evidence that Jersey itself causes a universal black-PhantomJS defect. The endpoint code, PhantomJS build, target page and response handling determine which branch applies.

Can changing the Jersey @Produces annotation fix a black image?
Only when the response was mislabeled or transformed. It cannot make a transparent or failed render contain page pixels; first compare the local and downloaded bytes.
Should I convert PNG to JPEG?
Conversion removes alpha, which can hide a transparency diagnostic. Keep PNG while investigating and convert only when an opaque format is actually required.
