The timing alone does not prove the update caused a lasting problem: background apps, weak signal, temporary system activity and battery wear can all affect runtime. Use the steps below to identify the likely cause before restricting apps or changing settings.
1. Find what is using the battery
Open Settings > Battery and review the usage graph and app-by-app consumption. On some Galaxy phones, the relevant screen is under Settings > Battery and device care > Battery. Menu names vary by model, software version and region; use the closest Battery or Device care screen available on your phone. Samsung’s battery guidance describes tapping the battery graph to inspect detailed app usage.
- Look for an app with unusually high recent use, especially one you have recently installed or updated.
- If an app stands out, update it through the store where you installed it, then check whether its battery use returns to a more typical level.
- If its use remains unusually high, consider restricting its background activity or uninstalling it if you no longer need it.
Samsung also recommends using Device care to check for unusual battery use and scan for threats. This helps distinguish an app-related issue from a general drop in runtime.
2. Reduce background activity only where it makes sense
On some U.S. Galaxy software, the path is Settings > Battery and device care > Battery > Background usage limits. Other versions group these options under Settings > Battery. From there, you may be able to put unused apps to sleep or choose apps for Sleeping or Deep sleeping. Samsung explains the options in its Sleeping apps guide.

Sleeping apps
Sleeping apps are prevented from operating normally in the background, which can reduce background battery use. Depending on the app, it may refresh less often or deliver notifications later.
Deep sleeping apps
Samsung says deep sleeping apps work only when you open them manually. Do not use this setting for apps whose timely alerts or background syncing you rely on, such as messaging or security apps.

Apply restrictions selectively, then observe the usage graph and whether the app still behaves as you need. The setting names and exact route depend on your model and software.
3. Use power controls as temporary mitigations
Device care’s optimization option—often labeled Optimize now—and Power saving can help manage consumption. Power saving limits background activity and may restrict features or notifications. It can extend runtime while you investigate, but it does not identify the cause or restore a worn battery.

Review display and connectivity
- Lower screen brightness or shorten screen timeout if those changes suit your use.
- Turn off connectivity features you do not need at the moment.
- If you are in an area with weak or unstable reception, consider whether the phone is spending extra power maintaining a connection.
Samsung’s Galaxy battery guidance identifies display settings and connectivity as factors in battery life. Samsung also notes that 5G may consume more power, particularly where 5G coverage is weak, and suggests considering LTE in that situation in its new Galaxy battery guidance. This is context-dependent advice, not a reason to disable 5G everywhere.
4. Allow for background work without assuming a fixed recovery period
After an update, check the usage graph again as apps and system tasks settle. Samsung says a new Galaxy may use more battery during initial setup because setup and background processes are running, but that guidance concerns new-device setup; it does not establish a universal post-update waiting period or guarantee that update-related drain will resolve on its own. If the drain continues, keep troubleshooting rather than relying on a set number of days.

5. Check battery condition and get model-specific help
Battery capacity declines gradually with repeated charging and discharging. Samsung Australia describes the battery as a consumable component and notes that reduced capacity cannot be restored. Settings can manage power use, but they cannot reverse battery wear.
Where available, open the Samsung Members app and run Phone diagnostics to check battery status. If the problem persists or diagnostics indicate an issue, contact Samsung support or an authorized local service provider for an assessment specific to your model. Diagnostic availability and service options vary by device and location.

A pop-up claiming that your phone is slow or its battery is draining fast may be an attempt to persuade you to install another app. Samsung warns about fake alerts from third-party apps in its Galaxy troubleshooting guidance. Do not install an unknown cleaner or battery-saver app in response to a warning; use the phone’s built-in Device care tools instead.
When to contact support
If no app or setting explains the drain, or battery diagnostics show a problem, note your Galaxy model, software update build and when the change began before contacting support. These details help support assess the issue for your specific phone. Do not assume a replacement battery is needed until the device has been assessed.
