If your Canon EOS Rebel T3i (also called the EOS 600D) will not autofocus, check the lens’s AF/MF switch and mounting first, then the contacts and shutter-button assignment. Next rule out focusing distance and difficult subjects, confirm the AF mode, and compare viewfinder shooting with Live View. If those checks do not help, contact Canon service or the lens maker rather than guessing which component has failed.

1. Check the lens switch and mounting

  1. Set the lens focus-mode switch to AF. Autofocus will not operate when the lens is set to MF. Canon states this directly in its EOS Rebel T3i/EOS 600D autofocus troubleshooting guide.
  2. Make sure the lens is securely mounted. If it is loose, turn the camera off, remove and remount the lens according to its instructions, then try autofocus again. A poor connection can interfere with communication between the lens and camera.

2. Check the lens and camera contacts

Dirty electrical contacts can interrupt communication between the camera and lens. Canon advises wiping the contacts very gently with a clean, dry cloth. A camera-cleaning microfiber cloth is one option; Canon does not specify a brand or cleaning product.

  • Do not use a wet cloth.
  • Do not touch the contacts directly.
  • If the contacts are particularly dirty, Canon advises contacting a service center rather than attempting more aggressive cleaning.

3. Check what half-pressing the shutter does

Half-pressing the shutter button normally starts autofocus. If it meters or locks exposure instead, check Custom Function IV-9, Shutter/AE lock button. Canon’s troubleshooting says to use a setting other than 1 or 3 in the situations it describes; its focus-indicator guidance identifies the default as 0: AF/AE lock.

The displayed choices and menu workflow can depend on the current setting. Use the EOS 600D instruction manual linked from Canon’s Rebel T3i support page to confirm the correct option for your setup instead of changing the function by guesswork. If you use a separate AF control, verify that its assignment is intentional.

4. Check focusing distance and the subject

Confirm the subject is within the lens’s range

Every lens has a minimum focusing distance. If the subject is closer than that distance, the camera will not focus; the limit depends on the lens, not just the T3i body. Move farther back and try again. Check the lens documentation for its minimum focusing distance.

Give autofocus an easier target

Canon lists low-contrast scenes, low light, strongly backlit reflective subjects, overlapping near and far objects, and repetitive patterns as difficult for AF. Try aiming at a distinct, contrasting object at the same distance as the subject, then recompose. If the camera still cannot acquire focus, set the lens to MF and focus manually.

5. Match the AF mode to subject movement

AF mode Best suited to What to expect
One-Shot AF Still subjects The camera focuses once; the focus confirmation light and beep operate as expected for this mode.
AI Servo AF Moving subjects or changing focus distances The camera continues adjusting focus. The focus confirmation light and beep do not operate as they do in One-Shot, so their absence alone does not mean autofocus is broken.
AI Focus AF Subjects that may begin moving The camera starts in One-Shot and switches to Servo if it detects movement.

These behaviors are described in Canon’s T3i AF-mode guide. If the focus confirmation light does not appear, first confirm that the camera is not using AI Servo before treating the indicator as a fault.

6. Compare viewfinder autofocus with Live View

The T3i offers three Live View AF options: Live, Face Detection Live, and Quick. Quick mode uses the dedicated AF sensor as in viewfinder shooting, but the Live View image is interrupted briefly while focus is acquired. Canon says focusing in Live and Face Detection Live takes slightly longer. That difference can explain slower or interrupted Live View behavior; by itself, it does not identify a hardware fault.

7. When to contact service

If the lens is set to AF and mounted securely, the contacts are clean, the shutter-button assignment is appropriate, and the subject and AF mode are suitable—but autofocus still does not work—Canon recommends contacting a service center. If the lens is made by another manufacturer, contact that lens maker’s support channel. Symptoms alone cannot establish whether the camera body, lens, or another part is at fault.
