If the file is already out of sync, repair or replace the file; if it is synchronized locally but not in the stream output, troubleshoot the playback or capture path. A delay in when viewers receive a stream is not, by itself, proof that audio and video are misaligned.
Identify whether the problem is a fixed offset or growing drift
Use a clear cue that pairs visible action with sound, such as a hand clap, impact, or mouth movement with speech. Check once near the beginning and again near the end of the exact file you plan to stream. If the audio is displaced by roughly the same amount at both points, the mismatch appears fixed; if the gap changes, it is drifting. These observations help narrow the fault, but neither pattern alone establishes its cause.
- Play the exact prerecorded file locally in a reliable media player. Avoid substituting a different export or version.
- Check the cue near the beginning and near the end, and note whether the mismatch stays about the same or grows.
- Record the result before changing anything in the encoder. If the original file is out of sync, correct or replace that source before adjusting live-stream controls.
Compare the file with the actual OBS output
If the source plays correctly, test the same file through the scene and audio routing you intend to use. Make a local OBS recording or run a private YouTube test, then inspect the resulting recording or stream output. Listening to OBS audio monitoring alone does not prove that the final program is synchronized. OBS’s mixer guidance recommends recording as usual and playing back the recording before publishing. For a YouTube test, include movement and audio similar to the real stream and monitor YouTube’s stream health. YouTube recommends representative tests before going live. YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

- Use the same OBS scene, source, audio track selection, and encoder configuration planned for the continuous stream.
- Record a representative section locally or test privately on YouTube.
- Review the output at both an early and late sync cue. This helps distinguish a consistent offset from drift.
- Change one relevant setting at a time, repeat the test, and keep a record of the configuration that worked.
Check the prerecorded source and OBS playback source
When the file itself is out of sync
Do not expect a live-stream setting to repair a timing error already present in the file. Repair or replace the source, then repeat local playback and the OBS output test. The right repair depends on the file and how it was created; the available guidance does not establish one editor or repair method that applies to every case.
When you use OBS Media Source
OBS Media Source plays common video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, as well as audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Its controls include looping, restarting playback when active, hardware decoding, playback speed, and end-of-playback behavior. When you use a playlist
OBS’s VLC Video source can play a playlist and requires VLC to be installed. Verify the playlist entries and test the specific item that exhibits the mismatch; a playlist does not show whether the fault is in one source file or in the stream path. OBS media sources
Change a setting only when it matches the fault
Separate audio input or output capture is out of sync
If the mismatched audio comes from a separate captured device rather than from the audio embedded in a prerecorded Media Source, inspect that device’s source configuration. On Windows, OBS offers “Use Device Timestamps” for audio input/output capture and describes it as an attempt to prevent desynchronization. Test its effect in a recording; it is not a universal adjustment for audio already embedded in a media file. OBS audio capture guide

The audio is embedded in the prerecorded Media Source
Do not assume that OBS Advanced Audio Properties’ “Sync Offset” will correct an embedded track’s timing. The official guidance available here does not establish that behavior for this case. An individual 2021 OBS forum report describes an offset not affecting an imported WAV media source, but that single report does not settle behavior across versions and configurations. The output is synchronized but reaches viewers later
Compare the actual program output with the viewer’s playback and check the ingest mode. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments. That is a delivery-latency difference; it does not show that HLS inherently misaligns audio and picture within the program. HLS setup guidance specifies segment durations from one to four seconds and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Those are protocol setup details, not a guaranteed sync fix. YouTube HLS ingestion setup

Check YouTube encoder settings without treating them as a sync repair
Once the file and program output are synchronized, verify that the encoder is configured within YouTube’s current ingest guidance. These settings are recommendations for sending a stream, not specific corrections for a timing fault. YouTube’s published guidance, accessed in 2026, includes:
- RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, with RTMPS recommended for encrypted transport.
- H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, with frame rates up to 60 fps.
- Constant-bitrate encoding.
- A two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio sample rate guidance of 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1, with recommended audio bitrates of 128 Kbps for stereo and 384 Kbps for 5.1.
Check YouTube Help again when configuring a new stream, since platform requirements and recommendations can change. YouTube also advises testing before the event: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

Keep a useful record while testing
For each test, note the source file, OBS version, operating system, selected audio track, ingest protocol, setting changed, and whether the mismatch was constant or grew over time. Monitor OBS meters, but judge synchronization by playing back the actual recording or output. Change one variable at a time and retain a known-good configuration so you can undo an unsuccessful change.
