First find where the audio and picture stop matching: play the encoded file locally, check the encoder preview, then compare the YouTube playback. If the local file is already out of sync, correct and re-export it. If it is synchronized locally but not in the live stream, troubleshoot the encoder and delivery path instead. The right fix depends on where the mismatch first appears; there is no universal offset value.

Find where the sync problem begins

Use the same clear event in each check: a spoken word with visible lip movement, a clap, or a sharp impact. Compare the locally saved archive, the encoder’s output or preview, and the YouTube player. This comparison helps distinguish a defect in the encoded file from one introduced later; it is a practical diagnostic method, not a formal calibration test prescribed by YouTube.

  1. Play the encoded file locally. Check whether sound and picture match in the file itself. If they do not, investigate the file before changing live-stream settings.
  2. Inspect the encoder preview or output. If the local file is synchronized but the encoder output is not, focus on the live source and encoder configuration.
  3. Compare YouTube playback. If the encoder output appears synchronized but the YouTube player does not, inspect stream health and the outbound connection as well as the encoder.

YouTube advises checking the stream directly in the encoder, dashboard errors, CPU load, and the local archive when troubleshooting a live stream. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide covers those checks. Do not assume that sync alone proves a network fault; use the comparisons to locate where the mismatch appears.

If the encoded file is already out of sync

When the local file reproduces the problem, inspect the audio and video tracks and compare their durations and alignment. YouTube notes that an audio track shorter or longer than the video can cause sync trouble and recommends editing the tracks in video-editing software before uploading again. YouTube’s guidance on audio and video sync describes this remedy.

  1. Open the source or encoded file in your video editor and inspect the audio and video tracks, including their start and end points.
  2. Correct the misalignment or track-duration problem in the editor. A steady offset may be corrected by adjusting the relevant track, but the amount depends on the actual file and playback—there is no single millisecond correction that applies to every case.
  3. Export a new file, then play that export locally and check the same sync marker before sending it to YouTube.
  4. If the new local export is still out of sync, continue correcting the file rather than trying to compensate for it with live-stream settings.

If the local file is synchronized but the live stream is not

Follow YouTube’s live troubleshooting flow: check the encoder version, inspect its output, look for errors in YouTube’s Live Control Room, and review CPU load. If the encoder output looks and sounds healthy, check outbound internet strength; contact your internet service provider if you find connection problems. These checks help narrow the fault, but a sync mismatch by itself does not establish that the connection is responsible.

  • Mismatch already visible in the encoder: Check the live sources and their timing, then inspect the encoder configuration.
  • Encoder output looks healthy but YouTube playback does not: Check the Live Control Room for errors and review the outbound connection.
  • CPU load is high or the encoder reports errors: Address the reported encoder or system issue, then repeat the comparison with a fresh test stream.

For a live source-level mismatch in OBS, its Render Delay filter delays a source’s image rendering and can be useful for syncing a webcam with microphone audio. It adjusts a live source; it does not rewrite timing in a file that has already been encoded. See the OBS Render Delay filter documentation before applying it, and verify the result in the encoder preview.

Check YouTube’s encoder settings for a controlled retest

These are platform recommendations to verify for the specific stream, not guaranteed fixes for a measured sync offset. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists the following for RTMP/RTMPS streams:

Setting YouTube guidance
Audio format AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS
Audio sample rate 44.1 kHz for stereo; 48 kHz for 5.1
Audio bitrate 128 kbps for stereo; 384 kbps for 5.1
Bitrate encoding CBR
Keyframe interval Two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds

Confirm the current requirements in YouTube’s encoder settings and troubleshooting guidance, since settings and interfaces can change. For a controlled retest, YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health. Its advice is simple: “Make sure that you test before you start your live stream.”

YouTube’s streaming tips also recommend keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. That supports stream reliability; it does not correct a fixed mismatch between picture and sound. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips for preparation guidance.

Do not confuse latency with desynchronization

Latency is the time between capture by the camera or encoder and the event appearing in the stream. Audio/video desynchronization means the sound and picture do not correspond at playback. A stream can have noticeable latency and still be synchronized. If both audio and video arrive late but remain matched, an audio-delay adjustment is not the right diagnosis. See YouTube’s explanation of stream latency.

The local encoded file is out of sync File tracks or their timing Compare audio/video durations, edit the tracks, export again, and verify the new local file.
The local file is synchronized, but the encoder preview is not Live source timing or encoder Inspect sources and encoder output; for an OBS live-source offset, consider Render Delay and verify the preview.
The local file and encoder output look synchronized, but YouTube playback does not Live delivery path or stream health Check Live Control Room errors, encoder health and CPU load, then inspect outbound internet strength.
Picture and sound arrive late together but remain matched Stream latency rather than sync error Treat latency and synchronization as separate issues; do not apply an audio offset solely because the stream is delayed.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded video running as a 24/7 YouTube live stream after you have corrected and verified its timing, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
