First find out whether the audio is out of sync by a steady amount or whether the gap grows as the stream runs. A fixed offset and accumulating drift have different causes, so an OBS sync-offset adjustment is not a universal fix. Check sample rates across OBS and your audio devices, inspect OBS statistics, then review YouTube Live stream health—changing one thing at a time.

1. Identify whether the mismatch is fixed or grows over time

Listen and compare a repeatable event—such as a visible hand clap, drum strike, or mouth movement—near the beginning and again later in the stream or its replay. Note whether the audio is already displaced at the start and stays about the same distance out of sync, or whether it becomes progressively more displaced.

  • About the same offset throughout: investigate a fixed timing offset in the capture or output chain.
  • The gap grows during the run: investigate sample-rate consistency and clock behavior across audio devices.

This comparison is a practical diagnostic method, not a kirtan-specific test prescribed by YouTube or OBS. Repeat it after each change so you can tell whether that change helped.

2. Make sample rates consistent across the audio chain

Check the configured rate in OBS, your operating-system audio devices, virtual audio devices, and any primary or backup stream output. YouTube’s Live Streaming API lists 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz as recommended audio sample rates and flags mismatches between primary and backup stream rates. Choose a rate supported by your setup and make the relevant devices agree; do not assume that changing only OBS fixes every device in the chain.

YouTube’s encoder guidance also provides sample-rate recommendations. Its listed association of 44.1 kHz with stereo and 48 kHz with 5.1 surround is specific to that guidance; do not treat it as a general rule that every stereo stream must use 44.1 kHz. Check the exact settings and any reported issues in YouTube Live Streaming API: LiveStreams, YouTube Live configuration issues, and YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.

3. Check whether separate devices may be drifting against each other

If your audio uses multiple USB devices, capture hardware, or virtual routing, simplify the chain temporarily and test again. OBS forum discussions identify inconsistent device rates as a possible source of drift or distortion; another community discussion notes that independent hardware clocks can behave differently even when devices show the same nominal sample rate. These are plausible setup-specific causes, not proof that every multi-device system will drift.

Approach What to check Trade-off
Keep devices separate Confirm each device’s configured rate and test whether the mismatch grows during a long run. Preserves existing routing and inputs, but leaves multiple device clocks in the chain.
Simplify or route sources through one interface Test with fewer separate audio devices or a single interface, then compare the beginning and a later point. May simplify routing and clock interactions, but requires suitable inputs and does not guarantee a fix.

Settings alignment or a routing change may resolve the issue without buying hardware. The forum guidance does not establish that purchasing an audio interface will solve every setup.

4. Read OBS statistics and separate network problems from sync problems

Open OBS’s View > Stats window while streaming. Look for network-dropped frames and other performance indicators. OBS says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection or one that cannot sustain the configured bitrate. That calls for network or bitrate troubleshooting; dropped frames alone do not show that audio-clock drift is the cause.

SABRENT USB External Stereo Sound Card Adapter, Plug & Play (AU-MMSA)
  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.

OBS notes that bitrate adaptation can reduce dropped frames at a quality cost. If OBS reports delivery trouble, address the connection and bitrate separately from sample-rate and timing checks. See the OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide (published September 30, 2024).

5. Review YouTube Live stream health

Check the live control room’s stream health messages for audio sample-rate, channel, or primary/backup configuration issues, then correct any mismatch it reports. YouTube recommends RTMPS in its encoder guidance. Treat the protocol recommendation as a connection-security/configuration check, not as a guaranteed cure for timing drift.

If the local recording remains synchronized but the live output or replay does not, the problem may occur later in the delivery chain. The available YouTube guidance does not establish one universal YouTube-side correction for that case. Compare local capture with the delivered output and retain any stream-health warning details when narrowing down the cause.

6. Change one setting at a time and verify a long run

  1. Record the starting symptom and compare a recognizable event near the beginning with the same kind of event later.
  2. Make one change, such as aligning a device’s sample rate or simplifying the audio routing.
  3. Check OBS statistics and YouTube stream health during the test, without treating network drops as proof of clock drift.
  4. Compare the new local recording and, when available, the actual live output or replay at both the beginning and a later point.
  5. If the result is unchanged, restore or document the setting and test the next likely cause rather than changing several variables at once.

Common symptoms and what to check

Symptom Check next
Audio starts late or early and stays about that far off Compare capture and output timing; do not assume that a sync-offset adjustment addresses growing drift.
Audio and video separate more as the stream continues Check sample-rate consistency and whether multiple devices with separate clocks are involved.
OBS reports network-dropped frames Investigate connection stability and whether the configured bitrate is sustainable; this is a delivery issue, not by itself proof of audio drift.
YouTube reports an audio or primary/backup configuration issue Correct the specific sample-rate, channel, or stream configuration mismatch named in stream health.
Local recording is in sync but stream replay is not Compare the delivery path and YouTube health messages; no universal platform-side fix is established.

Or let it run in the cloud
