First determine whether the audio is drifting in the YouTube stream itself, only in your local monitoring, or only in the replay. Those symptoms point to different parts of the signal path, and a fixed sync offset will not necessarily correct a delay that grows over time. There is no universal fix without knowing your encoder, audio source, and monitoring setup.

Identify where the drift occurs

Check the actual YouTube live output as well as your headphones or speakers. Local monitoring can behave differently from the signal viewers receive; an OBS community discussion describes monitor-device clock behavior as one possible explanation, not a confirmed cause for every setup (OBS forum discussion).

  • Only local monitoring drifts: investigate the monitoring route and playback-device clock before changing the outgoing stream.
  • The live output and replay drift: treat it as a stream-path issue and collect a short representative segment.
  • Only the replay appears out of sync: compare the same moment in the live output and replay using the same playback device and method. Do not assume the encoder is responsible until you have isolated the difference.

Measure the offset near the start, then again after a known interval. Note the interval and keep the playback path consistent. A roughly unchanged offset is different from one that grows as the stream runs; recording both measurements gives you a useful symptom description instead of simply calling the audio “delayed.”

Check audio settings and YouTube’s stream health

Review YouTube Live’s stream health or configuration information for reported audio problems. YouTube’s LiveStreams documentation recommends 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz sample rates and specifies supported audio configuration details (YouTube LiveStreams API documentation). YouTube’s guidance for configuration issues also identifies mismatches between primary and backup stream audio settings: the codec, sample rate, and channel count should agree (YouTube Help: Fix streaming issues).

  1. Record your current encoder and source audio settings before changing anything.
  2. Compare the audio codec, sample rate, and channel count in the encoder output with the source or device settings and YouTube’s stream-health information.
  3. If you use primary and backup streams, check that their audio configuration matches.
  4. Correct a setting only when you find an actual mismatch or a YouTube-reported issue. Avoid changing every source to a different sample rate as a blanket remedy.
  5. After each change, check a fresh live segment and compare its beginning and later points using the same measurement method.

Separate connection problems from audio drift

If you use OBS, inspect its dropped-frame and connection indicators separately from audio synchronization. OBS says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection to the remote ingest server or a connection that cannot sustain the configured bitrate (OBS: Dropped frames and network issues). This is a reason to investigate network stability or bitrate, but it does not by itself prove why audio and video are drifting.

Keep a record of when dropped frames occur and whether the measured audio/video offset changes at the same time. That correlation can help narrow the investigation, but it is not enough on its own to establish a cause.

Do not switch protocols just to chase drift

Latency and accumulating synchronization drift are not the same problem. YouTube explains that “HLS has higher latency because it sends segments of video, instead of a continuous stream like RTMP,” and documents protocol-specific setup requirements (YouTube Help: Set up an HLS stream). That latency difference does not establish that changing to HLS will fix a gradually growing audio/video offset. Change ingest protocol only if your diagnosis points to a protocol-related issue and you can meet the chosen protocol’s requirements.

Preserve evidence while troubleshooting

  • Save the current encoder settings and relevant logs before making changes, especially for a continuous stream.
  • Record where you measured the problem: live output, local monitor, replay, or more than one of these.
  • Write down the starting offset, later offset, elapsed time, and playback route for each comparison.
  • Change one relevant setting at a time, then repeat the same comparison. Otherwise, it is difficult to tell which change affected the result.

The available documentation does not establish one root cause or guaranteed correction for every 24/7 rain-sounds stream. You do not need to buy an audio interface, capture device, or other hardware unless the diagnosed signal path shows a specific need.
